Obituary: Domenico Pietro Calabria

Domenico Pietro Calabria, at 76

Domenico Pietro (“Peter”) Calabria passed away after a courageous battle with glioblastoma on Nov. 22, 2023. He was 76.

Mr. Calabria leaves behind his beloved wife of 44 years, Maria Fabiano Calabria; his daughter Felicia Bennington and her husband, Jason, of Weymouth; and his daughter Silvana Bitar and her husband, Bahige, of Rockland. He was the brother of Pino Calabria of Hull, Maria Donato of Hull, and the late Ciccio Calabria, Silvana Calabria, and Vincent Calabria. He was the devoted Nonno to his grandchildren, Nicholas and Emilia Bennington. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Calabria immigrated to Hull from Sambiase/Lamezia Terme in Calabria, Italy, when he was only 19 years old. He came to be with his siblings and to make a better life for himself. He went back to Italy in 1979, and that is when he met his wife, Maria Fabiano. She moved here with him and helped to build a fantastic life for their family. Everyone was welcome in their house, where they would be sure to offer you something to eat or drink.

Mr. Calabria was a talented carpenter who created beautiful, intricate wood pieces. He originally started with creating altars and woodwork for churches, and more recently he created the cases for model ships for Lannan’s Ship Model Gallery. Mr. Calabria worked hard his entire life up until he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, and for 11 months, he didn’t allow even that to slow him down.

Mr. Calabria loved planting and taking care of his large garden of tomatoes and other vegetables, along with his wonderful fig tree that he would bury every year to protect it from the elements. For the holiday season, he would construct his intricate Christmas display that consisted of both outside lights and a Christmas village and Nativity set that would take up two rooms in his basement. Whenever anyone came to visit, he would take great joy in showing them his garden and his Christmas display. He was always known as the man behind the camera, documenting every event in his family’s life. He also loved walking along Nantasket Beach collecting shells and rocks.

Family was everything to Mr. Calabria. He was the best father and Nonno that anyone could ever ask for, and nothing brought him more happiness than to watch his grandkids playing. Saturday night dinners became a tradition in the Calabria household, and everyone was always welcome. Mr. Calabria was a generous, giving, selfless man who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Visiting hours were held Wednesday. A Celebration of Life Service is scheduled for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham, prior to the funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial in Hull Village Cemetery. Ms. Rosen-Horn was originally from Red Bank, N.J., born to an Italian mother and Jewish father. After graduating from Seton Hall University, she moved to Boston to pursue a nursing career in labor and delivery at Beth Israel Hospital. She was lovingly married to Max Horn for 45 years and was a devoted mother to her three children, Carla McCormick, Todd Horn, and Randy Horn.

Ms. Rosen-Horn was known to cherish her lifelong friendships and prioritize seeing family near and far.

Ms. Rosen-Horn was passionate about fitness, healthy eating, traveling, and reading. She was actively involved in her community and giving back. Ms. Rosen-Horn regularly donated platelets, was a co-president of the PTO, and a volunteer at the Council on Aging, where she led a walking group with seniors. Ms. Rosen-Horn adored babies, and her world was complete when she became a grandmother. She left an impression on all who knew her and she was known for her loyalty and direct honesty. Obituary: Alan Stuart

Alan Stuart, at 86

Alan “Al” Stuart, a longtime resident of Hull, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family. He was 86.

He was born in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, to Mary (Hughes) and Edward Stuart. He graduated from Foxcroft Academy, where he played football and ran cross country before attending the University of Maine. Shortly into his college career, Mr. Stuart answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the US Army. Being mechanically inclined and a natural problem-solver, he excelled as an electronics communication specialist.

After serving, he lived in Arizona for a few years, working in a copper mine before moving to Massachusetts to work with SH Couch Security Systems as an electrical engineer. Mr. Stuart moved into a house in Hull and made friends with some of the neighbors, one being his future wife, Joy (Augenstern). A couple of years after meeting, they married and had two sons they adored. His first job as an engineer sent him down a path that he took great pride in. He then moved on to Automatic Safety Products, where he rose to become the vice president. Eventually, he ended his career with Advanced Signal Alarm and Security, where he retired at 83.

Outside of work, his greatest passions were his family and sailing. Mr. Stuart was a member of the Hull Yacht Club for many years, participating in the Wednesday night boat races with friends for more than 30 years and participating in the Great Chase Race. He loved taking his family out sailing, taking the time to show them the ropes and prove himself as a seaworthy captain, husband, father, and friend.

On land, Mr. Stuart enjoyed fixing anything he could get his hands on, from household items to stopping on the side of the road to assist in repairing a stranger’s motorcycle. In his down time, he liked walking the trails at Bare Cove and Wompatuck, and traveling with his family to Maine and Florida.

Obituary: Pamela H. Schwartz

Pamela H. Schwartz, at 75

Pamela H (Pattyson) Schwartz of Plymouth passed away surrounded by her loving children on Oct. 15, 2023, at age 75. She was born in Elizabeth, N.J., and was the daughter of Brewster and Marie Pattyson of Cohasset.

Ms. Schwartz is survived by her children, Jesse Luke Schwartz of Plymouth, Stacey Joyce Marie Schwartz and partner Paul Noonan of Quincy. She was the former wife of James Schwartz and daughter-in-law of Joyce Schwartz of Pasadena, Maryland; sister of Laurie Hibbard and husband Harry of Hull, Stephen Pattyson and wife Charlotte Delaney of Weymouth, and John Pattyson and daughter Lena of Los Angeles;  and cousin of Brian O’Keefe and wife Liz, along with their children Sean and Sarah; and John Tim O’Keefe and husband Mark Smith. She also is survived by cousins Brian Pattyson and Kathy Pattyson Merkh.

Ms. Schwartz was an original free spirit who will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She loved animals – especially cats and horses, plants, and nature, and captured them with award-winning photography. She was an avid reader and found the perfect job for several years at Borders Bookstore. She worked at Stop & Shop for many years after Borders closed its doors. Ms. Schwartz also had early careers in administration at Harvard University, Ocean Spray, and Texas Instruments. She attended Syracuse University.

One of Ms. Schwartz’s hallmarks was her infectious laugh. She brightened many rooms in her lifetime when she got into one of her classic laughing fits. We all will miss that loving and welcoming sound. Ms. Schwartz was inquisitive about all things, and through her years developed an encyclopedic knowledge of areas of interest to her: animals, flowers, and cooking. She made quick work of the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle and sudoku.

She had many artistic expressions, which included creating beautifully detailed beaded jewelry and dreamcatchers. She was an original “flower child” and had house plants as old as her children, but always had room for one more. She always maintained a vegetable and flower garden, sometimes small, sometimes ginormous, but always prolific. And of course, she loved music. Seeing Tom Rush in Plymouth on her birthday was a highlight.

Ms. Schwartz’s journey took her from Massachusetts to Maryland to Austin, Texas (where she was married and had her two children), to Tucson, Arizona, to her favorite of all, Yosemite National Park, where she worked for several years enjoying all that park offers, and finally, back to the Northeast, where she returned to Plymouth to be with family.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

He was predeceased by his brothers, James E. Cowen and Stephen Davis.

Mr. Cowen was born on July 15, 1945 to Eugene H. Cowen and Margaret Mary Luce in Montpellier, Vermont. Mr. Cowen married and moved to Boston in 1964. He began his healthcare career as an Operating Room Technician at Beth Israel Hospital. During his tenure there, he served on early cardiac research teams. He subsequently worked at Milton Hospital.

Mr. Cowen left the healthcare profession and worked at several other occupations, eventually landing at Knight Tuition Payment Plans (KTPP). In 1983 he entered into permanent sobriety thanks to the help he received at NORCAP Lodge in Foxboro.

Larry met Anne while working at KTPP. After dating for several years, Mr. Cowen moved to Hull to Anne’s family home on Green Hill, where they enjoyed a quiet life. He enjoyed the beach, reading, music, videography, computer graphics, holiday decorating, and most of all, his family.

Mr. Cowen was a jack of all trades. He started a Handy Pair of Hands, a local handyman business, where he especially enjoyed helping elders. After retiring, he started his favorite job of all by working part-time at the Sunshine Pet Parlor with his best-furry friend, Patches, by his side. He loved greeting all his four-footed friends.

Mr. Cowen believed in the four stages of life: 1. You believe in Santa Claus. 2. You don’t believe in Santa Claus. 3. You are Santa Claus. 4. You look like Santa Claus. He was Santa at Sunshine Pet Parlor and the Hull Holiday Showcase for several years, as well as to any child he encountered along the way. So although Santa Larry might be gone, he still exists as long as there is love, generosity, and devotion.

There will be no formal services, but private celebrations of life. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Friends of Dana-Farber, 450 Brookline Ave., SW120, Boston, MA 02215, or to any animal charity

Obituary: J. Ernest St. Jean

J. Ernest St. Jean

J. Ernest St. Jean of South Dartmouth, affectionately known as “Ernie” or “Saint,” died peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 2, 2023, after a prolonged illness. He was the loving husband of Carole Jeanne (Young) for 53 years.

Born in Providence, he was the eldest son of the late J. Ernest and Gloria (Beaudoin) St. Jean. Mr. St. Jean spent his formative years in Canton and became an active and longtime member of the community. He and Carole and their family later moved to the seaside town of Hull, where they enjoyed ocean views and bay breezes. More recently, he and his wife resided in South Dartmouth. Mr. St. Jean’s dedication to lifelong learning began upon graduation from Canton High School and continued with his studies at Providence College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in English. Not surprisingly, he pursued further coursework at the University of Nebraska. Even more rewarding for him than his studies was the opportunity to return to his high school alma mater and devote nearly 35 years to students in Canton. While he thoroughly enjoyed reading and discussing a “good” book or taking in an entertaining movie, his favorite and most fulfilling pastime was being with his family, and especially with his grandchildren, whom he adored. He was very proud of them all.

He was the loving father of Sonya R. Rice and her husband, Randy, of Lutz, FL; Rachel S. Kolosky and her husband, Chris, of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; and Marc A. St. Jean and his wife, Amanda (Tai), of South Easton. He was the cousin of Janet Parenteau of Indialantic, FL. He was “Bubba” to Ariane, Nate, and Myra Rice; C. J. and Kyla Kolosky; and Ethan and Geoffrey St. Jean. He is survived by his brothers Paul J. St. Jean and his wife, Marylou, of Warwick, R.I.; Thomas A.
