Obituary: Brenda McDonald

Brenda McDonald, at 69

Brenda Marie (Morrisey) McDonald 69, of Port Richey, Fla., made her journey home on Monday, September 18, 2023 surrounded by family and close friends.

She was born on May 21, 1954 and raised in Hull. She was the daughter of the late Chester and Gertrude (Jeffrey) Morrisey, and was predeceased by her stepmother, Olive (Grant) Morrisey.

Mrs. McDonald graduated from Hull High School and relocated to Florida in 1992 with her loving husband of 40 years, William McDonald (retired from the MDC Police), but always kept Nantasket Beach close to her heart.

Mrs. McDonald always dreamed of obtaining a college degree, and that dream became a reality in 2011, when she received her associates degree in human services with honors. She was so passionate about helping others that she continued her academic journey to include a bachelor’s of science in psychology in 2014. However, her greatest academic accomplishment was graduating magna cum laude from Hodges University with her master of science in clinical mental health counseling in 2019.

Mrs. McDonald was resilient in the face of adversity. She had a passion for life and enjoyed the little things that make life so beautiful. She was a lover of plants, her animals, her family, and her friends. She loved unconditionally, gave generously, and forgave easily.

Her beautiful life will be cherished in the lives of her husband, Bill McDonald; sisters Donna, Rae-an, and Erin; brothers Buster and John; stepchildren Paula and her husband, Mark, Tim, and Scott McDonald; grandchildren Brianna and her husband Seth, Olivia and her partner Sasha, Carissa, Devin, Tim, Maggie, and Brian; great-grandchildren Ava, Lennyn, Harper, Jaxson, and Sophia; dear friends Pegi, Maureen, and Susan. Obituary: Barbara Rabinovitz

Barbara Rabinovitz, at 79

Barbara Sue Rabinovitz of Brookline died on Sunday, August 13, 2023. She had reached her 80th year.

Born in Boston on March 31, 1944, she was the dear daughter of the late Ethel (Dollman) and Leo Rabinovitz, and the devoted sister of the late Kenneth Rabinovitz. The family had a home in South Brookline for nearly 50 years, and Ms. Rabinovitz was a graduate of the town’s schools. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in English from New York University, a master’s degree in journalism from Boston University, and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Her life’s work was as a print journalist. For more than 40 years, while living in downtown Boston and enjoying all that it offered to its residents, Ms. Rabinovitz served as a reporter and/or editor at four Boston-based newspapers: the Boston Herald American, Banker & Tradesman, Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, and The Jewish Advocate. The grace note to her career in newspapers was as copy editor for The Hull Times, in a place she treasured as a summertime destination from her childhood.

A couple of years ago, Ms. Rabinovitz returned to Brookline and shared her journalistic skill with The Brookline Beacon, a monthly publication of the Council on Aging. It was a return to a town that truly felt like home.

Obituary: Melvin R. Herrmann

Melvin R. Herrmann, at 105

Melvin Richard Herrmann of Hingham, formerly of Cocoa Beach, Florida and Arlington, Virginia, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He was 105. Mr. Herrmann was known by many as “Jake,” called “Buddy” by his grandson and grandchildren, respected by many Boy Scouts as Mr. Herrmann; yet he usually introduced himself as “Mel.”

Mr. Herrmann was born in Pittsburgh on Nov. 1, 1917, and was the son of Henry John and Flora (Lang) Herrmann. He was raised in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and attended Bethel Park High School. Mr. Herrmann enlisted in the United States Army on April 2, 1941. He earned the rank of technical sergeant, and proudly served his country during WWII, landing on Omaha Beach the day after D-Day. Thanks to the GI Bill, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Duke University. Working for the Department of the Navy, Mr. Herrmann specialized in cold-weather civil engineering in Alaska, Greenland, and the South Pole.

Mr. Herrmann married Gene (Thacker) Herrmann in 1951. They lived on Livingston Street in Arlington until Gene’s death in 2012. Together, they enjoyed their family and friends, work and fellowship at Mount Olivet Church, and travel to every corner of the country and globe. For the next 10 years he lived poolside in Cocoa Beach with cousins David and Jackie Glasser. In November 2022, he moved to the Residence at Penniman Hill in Hingham. Wherever he lived, he was extremely generous; whether you needed a stump removed, a charitable contribution, life advice, or an ear to listen, he would freely give of his time and resources. Even at 105, he was independent, mobile, sharp-witted, and above all else, kind.

Starting in 1962 he was an assistant scoutmaster with Troop 167. He led epic adventures to the Bahamas, the Allagash River, the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and the top of Grand Teton, with 13 trips to Philmont Scout Ranch and hundreds of whitewater canoe trips in between. For close to 40 years, he inspired hundreds of boys, many profoundly.

Mr. Herrmann was an active member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Arlington. He and Gene were members of Mac’s Sunday School class and supporters of the Mount Olivet Foundation, which has provided scholarships and low interest loans to college students since 1967. Especially after retirement, and with the help of many scouts, he kept the grounds of the church looking great.

Mr. Herrmann is survived by his son Henry J. Herrmann II and daughter-in-law Sally W. Herrmann, grandson Brian W. Herrmann and his wife Miriam R. Tabela, and great grandsons Asher W. Herrmann and Marcus R. Herrmann, all of Hull, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Gene T. Herrmann, son Frank T. Memorial fund pays tribute to late Hull music teacher Robert Ziegner

In the weeks since retired Hull Public Schools music teacher and band director Robert Ziegner died at age 92, former students and colleagues have launched a memorial fund to pay tribute to Mr. Ziegner and assist current students.

According to Hull High School alumnus Stu Turgel, who had stayed in contact with his former teacher, Mr. Ziegner died on Aug. 24, 2023 at a hospital near his home in Las Vegas following an onset of COVID19 earlier in the month.

“Bob was an extraordinary music teacher and led the band at Hull High School with great accomplishment and achievement,” Turgel wrote in tribute. “But as great a teacher as he was, he was an even finer man. He left an indelible mark on every student he taught, regardless of their musical proficiency.”

Turgel said he spoke with current Hull High music teacher Ian Barkon, and the school department has approved the creation of the Robert Ziegner Memorial Fund. Donations will be used for scholarships, the purchase of musical instruments and equipment, or other financial needs of the Hull High School Band, Turgel said. Funds also may assist students in financial need with music lessons and other support to help develop young musicians.

“The outpouring of tributes and expressions of sympathy for Bob Ziegner has been extraordinary,” Turgel said. “I hope those who knew and admired Bob, or just knew about his decades of devoted service to Hull High School and the Town of Hull, will consider making a generous donation to honor Bob’s legacy as a band leader, music teacher, and mentor extraordinaire.”

Obituary: Barbara O'Brien

Barbara O’Brien, at 91

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Barbara (MacDonnell) O’Brien.

Born on January 23, 1932 to Angus and Helen (Campbell), she peacefully left this world on August 27, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She leaves behind a legacy of deep faith and an immeasurable love of family and friends, two elements that defined her remarkable character and provided her family with a primer on how to live an exceptional life.

A devoted wife, Mrs. O’Brien was married for 70 years, a testament to the enduring love and commitment that she shared with her beloved husband, Edward. Together, they built a life enriched with seven children, who in turn blessed them with numerous grandchildren, forming a close-knit family that embodied unity and compassion.

Mrs. O’Brien grew up on Maple Street in West Roxbury, and as a young girl she spent many summers on Prince Edward Island on the family farm, where she nurtured her love of animals. After graduating from Roslindale High School, she entered the nursing program at Faulkner Hospital. Her nurturing spirit led her to become a source of comfort and care for those in need throughout her lifetime.

Her talents were as diverse as they were impressive. Mrs. O’Brien possessed a voice that resonated not only within the walls of her home but also through the airwaves, where as a young woman she graced the radio waves with her melodious singing.

In the early 1950s, Mrs. O’Brien met the love of her life, and so began the love story of Barb & Ed. They were married on September 7, 1953 and moved to Baumholder, Germany, where Mr. O’Brien was stationed. On October 26, 1954, their oldest son, John, was born.

When they returned from Germany, the O’Briens settled on Sunset Point in Hull, where they would raise their family. On “the Point” they not only found a home, they also met neighbors who would become lifelong friends.

Being an only child, Mrs. O’Brien remained very close with her parents, which helped to foster a close and loving relationship between them and her children. In the summer months, she would send the kids down to the bay to watch for Nana and Grampie on the Boston boat as they made their way to Steamboat Wharf for a visit. Her love of family was fiercely strong and she passed the importance of this love to her own children and grandchildren.

After raising their family, Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien made a pivotal life decision in 1985 to purchase Jake’s Seafood Restaurant from their dear friend Dot Jacobson in their hometown of Hull. It afforded them an exciting new chapter later in life, and also an opportunity to build a business with their youngest son, Jim. In 1986, Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien ventured south and built a beautiful home in Naples, Florida. The house provided a gathering place for her ever-growing family, where countless memories were forged and new friendships were made under the Florida sun.

Mrs. O’Brien’s boundless commitment to family, faith, community, and personal growth made her an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a tapestry of love, strength, and compassion that will continue to shape the lives of those she touched. As we bid farewell to a life well lived, may we celebrate the joy she brought, the lessons she imparted, and the enduring love she shared.

Mrs. O’Brien is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Edward; her sons, John (Patti), Michael (Carol), Tom (Lisa), Jim (Paula); and her daughters, Barbie (Bill), Mary, and Linda (Roger). She also leaves 16 grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, both locally and afar.

A Funeral Mass will be held Friday in St. Mary of the Assumption Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. O’Brien’s family asks that you please consider a donation to St. Mary of the Assumption Parish, 204 Samoset Ave., Hull, MA 02045.

Obituary: Russell J. Goulart Sr.

Russell J. Goulart Sr., at 55

Russell Joseph Goulart Sr., 55, of Hull died on Aug. 14, 2023, in the hospital suddenly and unexpectedly.
Born in Boston on Nov. 23, 1967, he was the devoted and loving father of Russell Joseph Goulart, Jr. of Hull and the son of Barbara Bogart Goulart of Hull and the late Russell Edward Goulart, who lived in Florida.
Mr. Goulart was a father first in all that he did. He also cared for his extended family and friends. Life brought a variety of passions and careers. As a child, building ramps with plywood and bricks to propel their BMX bikes into the air, Russ and his younger brother, Joshua, fostered his love of fun and adventure. His love of cars led him to auto mechanics. He loved to explore the ocean, the islands of Boston Harbor, and the campgrounds of New England, and he spent countless occasions sharing these passions with his loved ones. Then life moved him to become an EMT and beyond, where he showed his ability to put people at ease as he cared for them. The love of hockey was always a part of Mr. Goulart’s life. He was either playing, coaching, or being an EMT during games at rinks. Mr. Goulart’s greatest gift may have been his smile and his ability to love those around him and make them feel loved.
Mr. Goulart is survived by siblings Mary Goulart-Kerr, Tracey Masterson, Gina Fitzmaurice, and Joshua Goulart; brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, lifelong friend Bob Keough, and all the many friends who have touched Russ’s life.
Relatives and friends are invited to Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham, on Friday, Aug. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. On-street parking is available. For more information and online guestbook, visit www.downingchapel.com.

Remembering a unique Hull character on the 40th anniversary of his passing

Tribute by George L. Anastos

August 9 marked the 40th anniversary of the passing of my father, Louis G. Anastos, a.k.a. “Papa Lou.”

After leaving the Coast Guard after WWII, he took over his father’s business, the Apollo Spa. I can remember going down to open the Spa as a four-year-old at 5 a.m. I would go home and I would see him at 5 p.m., but not for long. He would go back to work and come home at midnight.

This went on seven days a week in the summertime. During the off season, he’d be home at 10 p.m. He served the town 364 days a year. At Thanksgiving, there were Table Talk pies for the townsfolk. At Easter, he made baskets and decorated the shelves with them. In those days, everybody came in the store, from bankers to bookies.

So, for all the old-timers who remember, and all the new folks who don’t, I want to honor a man they just don’t make anymore – my father.

Obituary: Joseph Gagne

Joseph Gagne, at 78

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joe Gagne, a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished member of the community. Mr. Gagne was born in St. Paul, Minn., on July 31, 1944 and his journey in life touched the hearts of all who knew him.

After attending the University of Minnesota, Mr. Gagne answered the call to serve his country and honorably joined the Navy. He proudly served aboard the attack submarine USS Whale during the late 1960s, embodying the values of honor, duty, and sacrifice. It was during his time in the Navy that he discovered his unwavering love for the sea and where he met the love of his life in Hull, Donna Antoine, of 60 Point Allerton Ave.

Joe and Donna exchanged vows at St. Ann’s Church in Hull on July 18, 1970, embarking on a journey of love and companionship that would span a lifetime. Together, they were blessed with two sons, Joel and Jason, who became the pride and joy of their lives.

Professionally, Mr. Gagne excelled as a liquor store manager, dedicating a remarkable 40 years to his craft. For two decades, he served as a beloved manager at Curtis Liquors in Cohasset. His dedication to his work went beyond the realm of business, as he formed meaningful connections with employees and customers alike, becoming a trusted friend and advisor to many.

Outside of work, Mr. Gagne found joy on the golf course. Golf became a passion that allowed him to unwind, connect with friends, and appreciate the beauty of nature. However, his greatest source of happiness and fulfillment came from the love he shared with his family. He was a loving father, always there to offer guidance, support, and unconditional love to his sons. Mr. Gagne also was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Aryana, Jack, Julian, Tessa, Seamus, and Owen Gagne.

Mr. Gagne will forever be remembered for his integrity, kindness, and generosity. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all. He leaves behind a community that will forever cherish his presence and a family that will continually honor his memory.

In celebration of Mr. Gagne’s life, a memorial service will be held on July 28 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Church. We invite all who knew and loved him to join us in honoring and remembering a remarkable man who brightened our lives with his presence.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to www.legion.org/donate/waystogive, an organization close to Mr. Gagne’s heart.

Forever in our hearts, Joe will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May his soul find eternal peace.
