Obituary: Barbara O'Brien

Barbara O’Brien, at 91

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Barbara (MacDonnell) O’Brien.

Born on January 23, 1932 to Angus and Helen (Campbell), she peacefully left this world on August 27, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She leaves behind a legacy of deep faith and an immeasurable love of family and friends, two elements that defined her remarkable character and provided her family with a primer on how to live an exceptional life.

A devoted wife, Mrs. O’Brien was married for 70 years, a testament to the enduring love and commitment that she shared with her beloved husband, Edward. Together, they built a life enriched with seven children, who in turn blessed them with numerous grandchildren, forming a close-knit family that embodied unity and compassion.

Mrs. O’Brien grew up on Maple Street in West Roxbury, and as a young girl she spent many summers on Prince Edward Island on the family farm, where she nurtured her love of animals. After graduating from Roslindale High School, she entered the nursing program at Faulkner Hospital. Her nurturing spirit led her to become a source of comfort and care for those in need throughout her lifetime.

Her talents were as diverse as they were impressive. Mrs. O’Brien possessed a voice that resonated not only within the walls of her home but also through the airwaves, where as a young woman she graced the radio waves with her melodious singing.

In the early 1950s, Mrs. O’Brien met the love of her life, and so began the love story of Barb & Ed. They were married on September 7, 1953 and moved to Baumholder, Germany, where Mr. O’Brien was stationed. On October 26, 1954, their oldest son, John, was born.

When they returned from Germany, the O’Briens settled on Sunset Point in Hull, where they would raise their family. On “the Point” they not only found a home, they also met neighbors who would become lifelong friends.

Being an only child, Mrs. O’Brien remained very close with her parents, which helped to foster a close and loving relationship between them and her children. In the summer months, she would send the kids down to the bay to watch for Nana and Grampie on the Boston boat as they made their way to Steamboat Wharf for a visit. Her love of family was fiercely strong and she passed the importance of this love to her own children and grandchildren.

After raising their family, Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien made a pivotal life decision in 1985 to purchase Jake’s Seafood Restaurant from their dear friend Dot Jacobson in their hometown of Hull. It afforded them an exciting new chapter later in life, and also an opportunity to build a business with their youngest son, Jim. In 1986, Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien ventured south and built a beautiful home in Naples, Florida. The house provided a gathering place for her ever-growing family, where countless memories were forged and new friendships were made under the Florida sun.

Mrs. O’Brien’s boundless commitment to family, faith, community, and personal growth made her an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a tapestry of love, strength, and compassion that will continue to shape the lives of those she touched. As we bid farewell to a life well lived, may we celebrate the joy she brought, the lessons she imparted, and the enduring love she shared.

Mrs. O’Brien is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Edward; her sons, John (Patti), Michael (Carol), Tom (Lisa), Jim (Paula); and her daughters, Barbie (Bill), Mary, and Linda (Roger). She also leaves 16 grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, both locally and afar.

A Funeral Mass will be held Friday in St. Mary of the Assumption Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
