Obituary: John B. Candito

John B. Candito, at 94
John B. Candito, of Hull, died Jan. 1. He was 94.
Mr. Candito was born and raised in Hingham and, after marrying his wife Mary, moved to Hull in 1951. In his younger years, he worked for Cronin Farm Diary in Weymouth and then became head custodian at the Memorial School in Hull. He was quite the handyman and enjoyed being a craftsman. He was known for his woodworking, especially his skill at making dollhouses and model ships. Mr. Candito enjoyed reading and keeping up with current events and politics. He also enjoyed sitting on his porch in Hull and watching the bay. He was fiercely loyal, highly religious, and loved his family deeply. After retirement, Mr. Candito became blind. Despite this setback, he persevered. He will be remembered for his hard-working and fun-loving personality. 
He was the loving husband of the late Mary E. (Slattery) and the cherished father of Tony Candito and his wife, Carol, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Bob Candito and his late wife, Kathryn, of Houston. He was Grandpa to Kara, Bryan, and Kristina; great Grandpa to Giacomo; and also leaves his “adopted son,” Michael Dunphy, and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: John H. Castle

John H. Castle, at 71
John Harold Castle, of Hull, died Dec. 28. He was 71. 
Mr. Castle was known as Jack and was a proud Army sergeant who served our country during the Vietnam War. He was very active in the military community in his civilian life, too, as a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a past commander of the Hull VFW Post 1787. He also was a member of the Scituate 3169 VFW, Cohasset American Legion 118, a life member of Vietnam Veterans Era Post 1 in Abington, a member of the DAV, and many other local organizations. He focused his life on caring for other veterans. 
Mr. Castle also was passionate about boating and fishing and was a past commodore of the Back River Yacht Club and a member of the Commodores’ Club of America. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing and also solving puzzles.  
His main passion in life was his family, especially his grandchildren, and spending time with those he loved. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten.  
H was the beloved husband of 37 years of Mariruth (Kecskemety) Castle of Hull; loving father of Joseph Davis and his wife, Brandy, of Maine, and Paul Davis, Sheila Ranson and her husband, William, and Brad Castle and his wife, Danielle, all of Hull. He was the devoted grandfather of Virginia, Michael, Joseph, Dakota, Trevor, Joshua, Chloe, Ethan, and Brayden; and he leaves one great-granddaughter. Mr. Castle also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Arnold Sherman

Arnold Sherman, at 87
Arnold Sherman, 87, died Jan. 2, after a brief illness. 
Mr. Sherman escaped with his family from Nazi Germany in 1939. He was a successful engineer and mentor, who always gave of himself and was loved by all who knew him. While living in Newton, he was involved with Temple Emanuel, but he made his special mark as a minyanaire and temple trustee at Hull’s Temple Beth Sholom. He made people’s lives better for having known him. 
He was the devoted husband of Naomi (Shapiro Greene) and the late Norma (Trust) and the beloved father of Ralph Sherman and his wife, Rose, Janet Sherman, and the late Hillery Sherman. 
Mr. Sherman was the stepfather of Eric Greene and his wife, Venus, Susan Murphy and her husband, Michael, and Sharon Kavanaugh; and the loving special grandfather (“Arnold”) of Alyssa Zisk, Katlin Murphy Sanchez, Matthew Murphy, Debra Greene, Alana Greene, and Christopher Kavanaugh.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m.  Sunday at Temple Beth Sholom, 600 Nantasket Ave. Mr. Sherman will be buried at Hull Village Cemetery. A kiddush at the temple will follow.
Shiva continues Sunday evening through Tuesday evening at his late residence, with a minyan at 7 p.m.

Margaret A. Shields, at 76
Margaret A. [Murphy] Shields, of Weymouth, formerly of Hull, died Dec. 25. She was 76.
Known to friends and family as Peggy, she grew up in Roxbury and raised her family in Hull. She was an avid sports fan, cheering especially for the New England Patriots and her beloved Tom Brady. Mrs. Shields enjoyed playing bingo and taking trips to Foxwoods. She will be sadly missed.
Beloved wife of the late Martin T. Shields Jr. and longtime companion of the late Martin J. Burke; she was the loving mother of Catherine Shields of Randolph, Martin T. Shields III and his wife, Debbie, of Hull, Maryellen Shields of Auburndale, Christine Shields of Quincy, Susan Collins and her husband, John, of Weymouth, and the late Nancy Freeland. The cherished Nannie of Carol, Jackie, Kayla, Sam, Jenna, and Christina, Mrs. Shields also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Scott K. Meegan

Scott K. Meegan, at 49
Scott Kevin Meegan, 49, of Arizona, died unexpectedly Nov. 27, while vacationing in Thailand.
Mr. Meegan lost both his parents by the age 10, but he rose above the odds. A graduate of Hull High School, he was a gifted artist and was offered a full scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design, but decided to forego college to serve his country in the armed forces. 
A distinguished veteran of the U.S. Army, he was one of six soldiers to work on the prototype of the Comanche attack helicopter. Mr. Meegan then served with National Guard units in Massachusetts and Alaska. He was also a member of the French Foreign Legion and saw combat in the early stages of the war in Bosnia as a U.N. peacekeeper, during which time he was interviewed by famed news correspondent Bob Simon. 
Mr. Meegan served as a military combat contractor during the war in Afghanistan, training and mentoring Afghani national security forces while stationed at and running a forward operating base. On several occasions after deployment, he bought and shipped hundreds of coats, hats, gloves, sneakers, candy, and toys for orphan children and villagers in Afghanistan. 
Mr. Meegan was well travelled and adventurous. He lived in or visited 32 states, 37 countries, and four Canadian provinces. While living in the Pacific Northwest, he worked as a deep-water abalone diver in Oregon and a king-crab fisherman in Washington state and Ketchikan, Alaska. He also worked for a private security firm in Norway where he equipped ships with high-tech equipment, then sailed on anti-piracy missions to the Horn of Africa off the coast of Somalia, to Djibouti, and to many other countries. 
Mr. Meegan had a brilliant and creative mind with a broad range of knowledge and skills in a variety of subjects. He loved to read and search for truths. He firmly believed knowledge is power. He spoke seven languages and was in the process of learning three others. He taught himself to play the guitar and was an exceptional artist, creating paintings, murals, and various art pieces for many family members and others. He also wrote a screenplay and had just completed inventing a unique kite design.
Mr. Meegan lived a humble yet triumphant life and had the kindest heart. He was an incredible role model and mentor to all his nieces and nephews. He was a simple man who lacked physical possessions but had the desire to share what he did have with those he loved, including taking many family members to Italy and Disney World, with all expenses paid. 
His greatest joy was his girlfriend Anny, whom he planned to marry. He will be missed tremendously, but his life and love will go on in the hearts of those he touched.
The youngest of 12 children, Mr. Meegan was preceded in death by his parents, Bena [DiTunno] and George Meegan; his three oldest brothers, William, Lawrence, and Dennis; and his grandparents, Caterina and Pasquale DiTunno, and Charlotte and William Meegan. He is survived by his siblings: Richard and his longtime partner, Suzanne; Cheryl and her husband, Mike Minicucci; Barbara and her husband, Tom Dargin; Patrick and his wife, Yuko; Nancy and her longtime partner, Corey; Michael and his wife, Rachel; Robert and his wife, Michelle; and George and his longtime partner Pandy; as well as multiple generations of nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Murray B. Fisher

Murray B. Fisher, at 82
Murray B. Fisher, of Hull, died Dec. 13. He was 82.  
Mr. Fisher served in the National Guard for 15 years. He loved living by the ocean, tending his gardens, New England sports, his beloved dog, Buddy, and all forms of music. He had a very strong work ethic and at times worked three jobs to support his family. He was a man of great faith and will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him. 
The beloved husband of Joan [Cardillo] Fisher; loving father of Mark Fisher, of Florida, Esta-Lee Fisher, of Boston, and Lisa Murray, Lori Fisher Byrnes, and Dani Fisher, all of Hull. He was the brother of Martin Fisher and Barbara Kupelnick, both of Malden, Gerry Brenner of New York, and the late Lenny Fisher. He was the grandfather of Michael Murray, Ryan Murray, Heidi Fisher, Corrie Fisher, Parker Byrnes, Dylan Komorny and Alanna Komorny. Mr. Fisher is also survived by three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Virginia Jelinek

Virginia Jelinek, at 86
Virginia “Ginger” Anne [Thompson] died peacefully, in her sleep, on Dec. 2, at the age of 86. 
Her father gave her the nickname Ginger, and no one could call her Virginia. She was born in Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C., on June 6, 1931. Her parents resided in Washington, D.C., and she attended Cecilia’s Catholic School. She went to secretarial school and worked as a secretary in nongovernmental institutions in Washington for many years. 
She met James J. Jelinek on a blind date while he was attending the U.S. Naval Academy. They married on her 22nd birthday and were together for more than 64 years. 
She was the beloved wife of James Jelinek; loving mother of Thomas Jelinek and his wife, Anne, of Alabama, Julia Murray, of Hull, and the late James J. Jelinek Jr.; and the cherished grandmother of eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. 
Mrs. Jelinek was the sister of Elizabeth Bratnyk of Pennsylvania and also is survived by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the care of Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, Hingham. A funeral service will be held in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church, 208 Samoset Ave., Hull, on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 10 a.m. Interment at Washington Street Cemetery in Norwell will immediately follow. Obituary: Dorothy Klayman

Dorothy Klayman, at 85
Dorothy [Winkeller] Klayman, a longtime resident of Hull whom everyone knew as Dodie, died Dec. 14 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston. 
Mrs. Klayman grew up on Browning Avenue in Dorchester, graduating from Dorchester High School in 1950. She met her husband, Myron Klayman, soon after, and they were married in 1954. They celebrated 60 wonderful years together in 2014. 
Mrs. Klayman attended Boston University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in education in 1954. Following her graduation, she was an elementary school teacher in Hingham. For many years, she worked summers alongside her husband, sisters, children, and other family members at the much-loved Paragon Park at Nantasket Beach. She later became a licensed real estate broker and co-founded Sea Coast Homes, a residential real estate firm based in Hull. 
Mrs. Klayman was an active member of Temple Beth Sholom and a lifetime member of Hadassah. 
She was predeceased by her husband, Myron, and her sisters, Phyllis Stone and Sylvia Gelfand. She is survived by her loving family, including her children: Neil Klayman and his wife, Adrienne Brenner, of California; Barry Klayman and his wife, Elyse Mall, of New York; and Lisa Aronson and her husband, Neil, of Massachusetts. She was the cherished grandmother of Noah and Julia Klayman and Jake and Benjamin Aronson. 
Funeral services were held last Sunday.

Obituary: Virginia A. Peaslee

Virginia A.  Peaslee, at 82
Virginia Anne [Sullivan] Peaslee, 82, of Hingham and Hull, formerly of Pinebluff, N.C., died peacefully Dec. 8.
Mrs. Peaslee was a psychiatric nurse who specialized in drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Her family cannot count the number of lives she touched by helping patients with their own journeys through recovery. She retired from a long career at Moore Memorial Hospital in Pinehurst, N.C.
She was the wife of the late David Peaslee and the loving mother of six children: John Tedeschi and his wife, Susan, of Scituate; Sherin Tedeschi of Boulder, Colo.; Alise Burbridge and her husband, Richard, of Hingham; Andrea Shill and her husband, David, of Palmdale, Calif.; and the late Edward Tedeschi III and David Tedeschi. 
She was the loving “Noni” to Jeremy, Elizabeth, and Christopher Tedeschi; Jessica and Nicole Burbridge; Meghan, Lauren, and Adam Shill; and Michelle and Brendan Tedeschi. She was “Great Noni” to Felicity and Jace Tedeschi. She is also survived by her loving sister, Brenda Merlino, and her husband, Larry, of Greenville, Maine. She also leaves many wonderful cousins and friends.

Obituary: Linda L. Lee

Linda L. Lee, at 78
Linda L. [Lank] Lee, a resident of Hull, formerly of Malden, died Saturday, Dec. 2, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. She was 78.
Born in Melrose, Mrs. Lee was one of three children of the late Edward T. and Eleanor E. Hoyt. She was raised in Melrose and was a proud graduate of Melrose High School. In 1990, Linda and Eugene S. Lee were married.
A kind, compassionate, and generous woman, Mrs. Lee loved life. She was always well-liked and sociable, and she never judged anyone. Dedicated to her family, she treasured any moments or events spent together. Linda and Gene and friends enjoyed yearly visits to Waterville Valley in New Hampshire to see the fall foliage. Later in life, she also served as a loving caregiver for Gene, who predeceased her. 
Mrs. Lee had a big soft spot for animals, especially cats. She dearly loved all her cats, especially the late Macy. She spent much of her free time working with Hull Seaside Animal Rescue, an organization that she held close to her heart.
In addition to her family and animals, Mrs. Lee found great joy in her community. She was happiest at home and treasured her neighborhood, where everyone looked out for each other. In her free time, she enjoyed relaxing during a Patriots game or a golf match on TV. She also enjoyed listening to music. Her generosity, kindness, sincerity, and unconditional love will be deeply missed by her family and friends. 
She was the beloved wife of the late Eugene S. Lee, with whom she shared 22 years of marriage. She was the loving and devoted mother of Edward J. Perelli Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Woburn, and stepmother of Colleen Thirdgill and her husband, Bryant, of Hull; she was also the dear sister of the late Carol Walker and her surviving husband, Charles, of Maine, and the late Eleanor Hoyt. 
Mrs. Lee was the caring aunt of Charles Walker and his wife, Beth, and great-aunt to Chase and Jack Walker, all of Maine.

Obituary: William F. Purvis

William F. Purvis, at 79
William F. Purvis of Hull, formerly of Jamaica Plain, died Dec. 12 at the age of 79.  
Mr. Purvis worked for the MBTA for more than 30 years and was a member of the Local 589 Carmen’s Union. He was a tour driver for City View Trolley Tours in Boston and was also a 60-plus-year member of the Boston YMCA. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. 
Known as “Bill the Shoe Guy,” for selling shoes, and as the “beach mayor” of Hull, he loved the beach, working in his yard, taking walks, riding his bike, swimming, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was also a Boston history buff. 
Mr. Purvis had a great sense of humor and always had a joke. He was everyone’s go-to guy if they needed anything and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. 
He was the beloved husband of 50 years of Mary L. Purvis of Hull; loving father of Julie Flynn and her husband, Paul, of Mansfield, and Elizabeth Purvis, of Hull; cherished “Papa” of Brendan William Flynn and Shannon Mary Flynn. He was the brother of the late Victor and Robert Purvis.
Mr. Purvis also is survived by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.

Robert B. Smith Jr., who was known as Bruce, died Dec. 3, at the age of 59. 
Mr. Smith was born and raised in Hingham, where he graduated from Hingham High School and was an avid hockey player. He worked for the town of Hingham for many years in the Parks and Recreation Department. 
Mr. Smith was very athletic and loved to spend time on the beach. He had a great sense of humor and was loved by everyone who met him. He enjoyed spending time with his family. 
He was the beloved son of Robert B. Smith, of Florida, and the late Elizabeth Smith; he was the father of Courtney Smith, of Weymouth, and Christopher Smith, of Scituate. He was the cherished brother of Stacey Sellman and her husband, Steven, of Plymouth; Susan Valley and her husband, Dan, of New Hampshire; Nancy Parker and her husband, Steve, of Pembroke; Amy Smith, of Canton; and Beth Peterson, of Pembroke. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Catherine E. [Friel] Warren of Hull, formerly of Jamaica Plain, died Dec. 6. She was 88. 
Mrs. Warren was born in Boston and attended Jamaica Plain High School, graduating in 1947. She was a classic homemaker, whether it be vacuuming, cooking, or spending time with her family. All who had the pleasure of knowing her will miss her dearly. 
She was the beloved wife of 66 years to Edward J. Warren of Hull; loving mother of Edward D. Warren and his wife, Elizabeth, of Roslindale; Joseph F. Warren and his wife, Joan, of West Roxbury; Dennis J. Warren and his wife, Judy, of Hull; Michael P. Warren and his wife, Lisa, of Braintree; Katherine M. Warren of Hull; and John P. Warren and his wife, Michelle, of Whitman. She was cherished “Nana” of 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. 
Mrs. Warren was predeceased by her siblings, Beatrice Cunningham, Margaret Rock, and Daniel Friel. She leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Barbara A. [Sapienza] Whelan, of Hull, died Dec. 10, at the age of 71. 
Her faith and her family were the focus of Mrs. Whelan’s life. She was originally from Dorchester and moved to Hull as a child, where she fell in love with the beach. She worked as a cosmetologist for Total Touch in Milton and La Mirage in Milton for 40 years. She cherished her role as a mom and grandmother and strongly valued the importance of education. 
She was the wife of the late Robert Leo Whelan, whom she met when she was 16. Loving mother of Kimberly A. Mello and her husband, Francisco, of Randolph; cherished grandmother of Melissa Mello; loving sister of Theodore Sapienza, Jr. and his wife, Denise, of Weymouth; Mrs. Whelan also was the devoted aunt of Teddy Sapienza and his wife, Garrett Sapienza and his wife, and Meghan Sapienza; and ther great aunt of Wyatt Sapienza.

Obituary: Douglas M. Wilcox

Douglas M. Wilcox, at 70
Hull resident Douglas M. Wilcox died Dec.7 at age 70. 
Mr. Wilcox worked in the book business as a publishing sales representative for many years. He was a man who was able to make a friend wherever he went. He was highly intelligent and had a love of history, politics, weather, and science. 
He was very open-minded and had a strong sense of religion. He served as a deacon at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church in Scituate. 
He was a huge Jimmy Buffet fan and was passionate about collecting books and political and historical memorabilia. 
His family was the center of his life and his proudest achievement; at the end of his life, his grandchildren were his greatest joy. Mr. Wilcox will be sadly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.     
He was the beloved husband of 40 years of Carla Campbell of Hull; loving father of Briana McAuliffe and her husband, Joseph, of Hull; and Alix Deegan and her husband, CJ, of East Bridgewater; and devoted “BePa” of JD, Delaney, Carter, and Mackenzie. 
He was the cherished son of the late Douglas and Carol Wilcox and the caring nephew of Patricia Thatner of New York. He is also survived by many loving cousins and dear friends.

Donna M. [Dunn] Kelly, of Hull, died unexpectedly Nov. 29. She was 55.
Mrs. Kelly was a lifelong Hull resident whose life was centered around her children and family. She enjoyed arts and crafts, baking, and gardening, and she loved the beach. She will be remembered as a devoted mother who had a great sense of humor. She will be greatly missed.
She was the beloved daughter of Nancy [Nangle] Dunn, of Hull, and the late Paul F. Dunn; and the devoted mother of Sean W. Kelly, Robert J. Kelly, and Brianna D. Kelly, all of Hull. She was also the former wife of Robert W. Kelly, of Hull; and the cherished sister of Deb McCarthy and her husband, Paul, Henry Dunn and his wife, Margaret, Tim Dunn, and Denise Heavern and her husband, Paul, all of Hull
Mrs. Kelly also leaves her stepfather, Robert Wacks, and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Maureen D. Hayes

Maureen D. Hayes, at 61
Maureen Doris Hayes of Youngtown, Ariz., died Nov. 7. She was 61.
Ms. Hayes had lived in Hull and Rochester, N.Y., before settling in Arizona. She had earned a master’s degree in social work and had long been employed at the Department of Economic Security as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. 
When she could no longer physically volunteer, she continued to make a difference through ongoing donations to food assistance charities, animal rescues, and transitional housing and domestic violence shelters. 
Survivors include her mother, Pauline A. Hayes; her sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and David Gofstein; her niece, Kayla; and her cousins, cousin-in-laws, and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, John Hayes.

Obituary: John J. Kelly

John J. Kelly, at 73
John J. Kelly, originally from Dorchester, died Nov. 26. He was 73.
Known to one and all as Jack, Mr. Kelly worked for the Old Colony YMCA for 30 years, during which time he focused much of his energy advocating for at-risk youth in the Greater Boston and Greater Brockton areas. He was a champion for those in need. 
He fulfilled his civic duty through various town government positions; most recently, he served as treasurer of the Friends of the Hull Public Library.  
Mr. Kelly cherished the time he spent with family and his life by the ocean in his beloved town of Hull. In the summer, he could be found enjoying his coffee at the Gut in the morning or taking a dip in the ocean at James Avenue in the afternoon. He never missed the opportunity to invite a passing neighbor up for a chat on his front porch on Western Avenue. While many enjoyed the chats, far fewer enjoyed getting stuck driving behind him. Everyone in Hull Village can attest that he was one of Hull’s slowest drivers.   
Son of the late John Kelly of Roscommon, Ireland, and Mary (McLaughlin) of Malin Head, Donegal, Ireland, he was the beloved husband of Beatrice (Quigley) Kelly of Hull and the loving father of Brian Kelly and his wife, Stacey, of Needham; Rachel Gilroy and her husband, Brian, of Hull; and Eoin Kelly and his wife, Maggie, of Hull. He was the dear brother of Joanne Adduci, of Hull, Marylou Henkin, of Connecticut, and the late Eileen Dumouchel and Brian Kelly. Mr. Kelly was the proud and cherished grandfather of Mia, Jackson, Quinn, Killian, Meara, and Saoirse. He also is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Obituary: Elaine E. Greenleaf

Elaine E. Greenleaf, at 74
Elaine E. (King) Greenleaf, 74, a longtime Gunrock resident, died peacefully at home Nov. 21, surrounded by her devoted family and friends. 
Born and raised in South Boston, she and her family moved to Hull in the mid 1970s. Between the “Southie Girls” (her lifelong friends: Frances Uftring, Sheila Mulkern, and Dianne Anastasio) and her extended family in Hull (especially Judy Barry, Betty Kelly, and Maryellen Londergan), she is thought of fondly and frequently.
“Lainzo,” as she was known, never stopped working. From her friends at Schooner’s, where she was a hostess for more than 20 years, to the people who knew her from the floral department at Stop & Shop, she was a no-nonsense Irish “broad” who worked hard and lived well. 
She will be missed by all who knew her. 
She was the loving mother of Jill Greenleaf and John Thomas Greenleaf and their spouses, Bill Mecklenburg and Jacqulyn Greenleaf; she also is survived by her sisters, Eleanore Baker and Roberta Donohue; and by Ronnie Greenleaf, father of Jill and John Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and Thomas King; her brother, Thomas King; and her sister, Myrtle Dowling. 
A memorial Mass will be planned for the spring or summer, when the flowers are in bloom and the neighborhood is full of life, just the way she liked it.
