Obituary: Alan Stuart

Alan Stuart, at 86

Alan “Al” Stuart, a longtime resident of Hull, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family. He was 86.

He was born in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, to Mary (Hughes) and Edward Stuart. He graduated from Foxcroft Academy, where he played football and ran cross country before attending the University of Maine. Shortly into his college career, Mr. Stuart answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the US Army. Being mechanically inclined and a natural problem-solver, he excelled as an electronics communication specialist.

After serving, he lived in Arizona for a few years, working in a copper mine before moving to Massachusetts to work with SH Couch Security Systems as an electrical engineer. Mr. Stuart moved into a house in Hull and made friends with some of the neighbors, one being his future wife, Joy (Augenstern). A couple of years after meeting, they married and had two sons they adored. His first job as an engineer sent him down a path that he took great pride in. He then moved on to Automatic Safety Products, where he rose to become the vice president. Eventually, he ended his career with Advanced Signal Alarm and Security, where he retired at 83.

Outside of work, his greatest passions were his family and sailing. Mr. Stuart was a member of the Hull Yacht Club for many years, participating in the Wednesday night boat races with friends for more than 30 years and participating in the Great Chase Race. He loved taking his family out sailing, taking the time to show them the ropes and prove himself as a seaworthy captain, husband, father, and friend.

On land, Mr. Stuart enjoyed fixing anything he could get his hands on, from household items to stopping on the side of the road to assist in repairing a stranger’s motorcycle. In his down time, he liked walking the trails at Bare Cove and Wompatuck, and traveling with his family to Maine and Florida.

Beloved husband of 52 years to Joy Augenstern of Hull, devoted father of Adam Stuart and his wife, Kelly, of Hingham and Edward Stuart of Hull. Loving brother of Peter Dunning and his wife, Jackie, of Exeter, N.H., John Stuart and his wife, Gloria, of Edmond, OK, and the late Judith Segerson. Cherished grandfather of Ryan Walsh Word, Aiden Stuart, and Jack Stuart. Great-grandfather of Nora Joy Word. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at Hull Village Cemetery on Monday, Nov. 6. Visit www.keohane.com for online condolences.

A celebration of life for Mr. Stuart will be held in the spring, when the Hull Yacht Club reopens. Details to follow.

Obituary: Pamela H. Schwartz

Pamela H. Schwartz, at 75

Pamela H (Pattyson) Schwartz of Plymouth passed away surrounded by her loving children on Oct. 15, 2023, at age 75. She was born in Elizabeth, N.J., and was the daughter of Brewster and Marie Pattyson of Cohasset.

Ms. Schwartz is survived by her children, Jesse Luke Schwartz of Plymouth, Stacey Joyce Marie Schwartz and partner Paul Noonan of Quincy. She was the former wife of James Schwartz and daughter-in-law of Joyce Schwartz of Pasadena, Maryland; sister of Laurie Hibbard and husband Harry of Hull, Stephen Pattyson and wife Charlotte Delaney of Weymouth, and John Pattyson and daughter Lena of Los Angeles;  and cousin of Brian O’Keefe and wife Liz, along with their children Sean and Sarah; and John Tim O’Keefe and husband Mark Smith. She also is survived by cousins Brian Pattyson and Kathy Pattyson Merkh.

Ms. Schwartz was an original free spirit who will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She loved animals – especially cats and horses, plants, and nature, and captured them with award-winning photography. She was an avid reader and found the perfect job for several years at Borders Bookstore. She worked at Stop & Shop for many years after Borders closed its doors. Ms. Schwartz also had early careers in administration at Harvard University, Ocean Spray, and Texas Instruments. She attended Syracuse University.

One of Ms. Schwartz’s hallmarks was her infectious laugh. She brightened many rooms in her lifetime when she got into one of her classic laughing fits. We all will miss that loving and welcoming sound. Ms. Schwartz was inquisitive about all things, and through her years developed an encyclopedic knowledge of areas of interest to her: animals, flowers, and cooking. She made quick work of the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle and sudoku.

She had many artistic expressions, which included creating beautifully detailed beaded jewelry and dreamcatchers. She was an original “flower child” and had house plants as old as her children, but always had room for one more. She always maintained a vegetable and flower garden, sometimes small, sometimes ginormous, but always prolific. And of course, she loved music. Seeing Tom Rush in Plymouth on her birthday was a highlight.

Ms. Schwartz’s journey took her from Massachusetts to Maryland to Austin, Texas (where she was married and had her two children), to Tucson, Arizona, to her favorite of all, Yosemite National Park, where she worked for several years enjoying all that park offers, and finally, back to the Northeast, where she returned to Plymouth to be with family.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Donations in Pam’s memory can be made to Black Feather Horse Rescue of Plymouth, 508-951-4685, www.blackfeatherhorserescue.org/donate, or South Shore Humane Society of Braintree, 781-843-5838, http://southshorehumane.org/about-us.

Obituary: Lawrence M. Cowen

Lawrence M. Cowen, at 78

Lawrence M. “Larry” Cowen, also known as “Santa,” passed away on October 25, 2023 at

South Shore Hospital. He valiantly battled non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma for the past year, and appreciated the compassionate care he received from Dana-Farber Cancer Center in Weymouth, Massachusetts General Hospital, the NVNA, and the Hull Fire Department.

Mr. Cowen leaves behind his life partner, C. Anne Murray of Hull and sons Timothy Cowen of San Francisco, Christopher Cowen of Hull, Brian Cowen of El Paso, Texas, and Frank Cowen of Loxahatchee, Florida, and grandsons Sebastian R. Cowen of San Francisco and Jackson L. Cowen of Pembroke. In addition, he leaves several half-/step-siblings: Bonnie Davis, Melodye Davis, Carolyn Crane, Candy Nichols, and Carla St. Sauveur and their extended family members in N.H., and his former wife and friend, Melodie Mellor of San Francisco. He was predeceased by his brothers, James E. Cowen and Stephen Davis.

Mr. Cowen was born on July 15, 1945 to Eugene H. Cowen and Margaret Mary Luce in Montpellier, Vermont. He grew up in Waterbury, VT and summered with the family on the Butterfield Dairy Farm outside of Middlebury, spending many an hour doing chores and enjoying being outdoors. He graduated from Rice Memorial High School in Vermont and Northeastern University in Boston.

Mr. Cowen married and moved to Boston in 1964. He began his healthcare career as an Operating Room Technician at Beth Israel Hospital. During his tenure there, he served on early cardiac research teams. He subsequently worked at Milton Hospital.

Mr. Cowen left the healthcare profession and worked at several other occupations, eventually landing at Knight Tuition Payment Plans (KTPP). In 1983 he entered into permanent sobriety thanks to the help he received at NORCAP Lodge in Foxboro.

Larry met Anne while working at KTPP. After dating for several years, Mr. Cowen moved to Hull to Anne’s family home on Green Hill, where they enjoyed a quiet life. He enjoyed the beach, reading, music, videography, computer graphics, holiday decorating, and most of all, his family.

Mr. Cowen was a jack of all trades. He started a Handy Pair of Hands, a local handyman business, where he especially enjoyed helping elders. After retiring, he started his favorite job of all by working part-time at the Sunshine Pet Parlor with his best-furry friend, Patches, by his side. He loved greeting all his four-footed friends.

Mr. Cowen believed in the four stages of life: 1. You believe in Santa Claus. 2. You don’t believe in Santa Claus. 3. You are Santa Claus. 4. You look like Santa Claus. He was Santa at Sunshine Pet Parlor and the Hull Holiday Showcase for several years, as well as to any child he encountered along the way. So although Santa Larry might be gone, he still exists as long as there is love, generosity, and devotion.

There will be no formal services, but private celebrations of life. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Friends of Dana-Farber, 450 Brookline Ave., SW120, Boston, MA 02215, or to any animal charity

Obituary: Brenda McDonald

Brenda McDonald, at 69

Brenda Marie (Morrisey) McDonald 69, of Port Richey, Fla., made her journey home on Monday, September 18, 2023 surrounded by family and close friends.

She was born on May 21, 1954 and raised in Hull. She was the daughter of the late Chester and Gertrude (Jeffrey) Morrisey, and was predeceased by her stepmother, Olive (Grant) Morrisey.

Mrs. McDonald graduated from Hull High School and relocated to Florida in 1992 with her loving husband of 40 years, William McDonald (retired from the MDC Police), but always kept Nantasket Beach close to her heart.

Mrs. McDonald always dreamed of obtaining a college degree, and that dream became a reality in 2011, when she received her associates degree in human services with honors. She was so passionate about helping others that she continued her academic journey to include a bachelor’s of science in psychology in 2014. Obituary: Eleanor Albert

Eleanor Albert, at 100

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Eleanor (Rosen) Albert, age 100, on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023. She died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones after a short period of illness.

Born, raised, and educated in Chelsea, she graduated from Chelsea High School in 1940 and attended business school, which prepared her for employment as a bookkeeper and secretary, and eventually led to a career at The Boston Globe.

The second born of four children of Ida (Green) Rosen and William Rosen, Mrs. Albert is survived by her younger sister, Geraldine Wexler of Randolph, and predeceased by her older brother, Leonard Rosen, and younger sister, Judith Rosen.

Mrs. Albert married Mitchell Joseph Albert in 1944 and together the couple had three children. The family lived in Roxbury and Dorchester before moving to Hull in 1958.

She leaves a long legacy that includes her three children: Richard Albert (Rhonda) and friend Karen, Dennis Albert (Karen), and Amy Albert-Schnipper (Philip). Her four surviving grandchildren include: Michael Albert (Laina), Stacey Festa, Matthew Albert, and Lawrence Albert (Patty). Mrs. Albert worked in various bookkeeping, office, and secretarial positions until she became employed by The Boston Globe and a member of the Typographical Union for her 30-year career. She retired at age 79 and thoroughly enjoyed her retirement years as much as she enjoyed her years at the Globe. She remained active in the community and maintained membership in the garden club, Temple Beth Sholom, and Hadassah. She loved the town of Hull and looking at the ocean from her condo. She was civic-minded and very active in the Anne Scully Senior Center for more than 30 years, assuming the office of president for 15+ years in one of the more active senior clubs. She volunteered for 19 years at Wellspring Multi-Service Center’s bookstore and took great pride in procuring and organizing greeting cards to sell. She gave of herself and her time and energy generously.

Mrs. Albert will long be remembered for having a strong work ethic, deep religious and spiritual beliefs, a big smile and hearty laugh, love of a bargain, and a good meal and sweet snack. Obituary: Barbara Rabinovitz

Barbara Rabinovitz, at 79

Barbara Sue Rabinovitz of Brookline died on Sunday, August 13, 2023. She had reached her 80th year.

Born in Boston on March 31, 1944, she was the dear daughter of the late Ethel (Dollman) and Leo Rabinovitz, and the devoted sister of the late Kenneth Rabinovitz. The family had a home in South Brookline for nearly 50 years, and Ms. Rabinovitz was a graduate of the town’s schools. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in English from New York University, a master’s degree in journalism from Boston University, and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Her life’s work was as a print journalist. For more than 40 years, while living in downtown Boston and enjoying all that it offered to its residents, Ms. Rabinovitz served as a reporter and/or editor at four Boston-based newspapers: the Boston Herald American, Banker & Tradesman, Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, and The Jewish Advocate. The grace note to her career in newspapers was as copy editor for The Hull Times, in a place she treasured as a summertime destination from her childhood.

A couple of years ago, Ms. Rabinovitz returned to Brookline and shared her journalistic skill with The Brookline Beacon, a monthly publication of the Council on Aging. It was a return to a town that truly felt like home.
She leaves good friends, colleagues, classmates in lifelong learning, and caregivers.

A private burial took place in Temple Emeth Memorial Park in West Roxbury.
