Obituary: Michael Kenny, Jr.

Michael J. Kenny, Jr. of Hull died with his family at his side on Sunday, April 3. He was 70 and had waged a yearlong battle with cancer. 
Born in Quincy, where he was raised and educated, he lived on the South Shore all his life and settled in Hull 13 years ago. He and his wife Ann Marie owned and operated Josephine’s B & B in Hull for 10 years and spent their winters in Florida.
The devoted father of Christina Conte of Pasadena, CA; cherished brother of Clare Barrett and her husband, Edward, of Quincy, Sheila Giglio and her husband, Harold, of Hull and the late Frances Greer, Maureen Beaton, and Catherine Marvelle; he is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours, which will be held on Friday, April 8, from 4-8 p.m., at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home, 74 Elm St., Quincy Center. 
On Saturday, there will be a gathering at the funeral home at 8:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Ann’s Church, 208 Samoset Ave., Hull. Burial will take place at Hull Village Cemetery.

Obituary: John Schmid

John Andrew Schmid, 74, of Greenville, NH, died peacefully April 1, surrounded by his wife and children, after a long-term illness.
Mr. Schmid was raised in Poestenkill, NY, where he met the love of his life, Ruth [Coonrad] Schmid, to whom he was married for 52 years. 
Mr. Schmid worked a variety of jobs throughout his life, but settled into and, in 2002, retired from a career as a journeyman mailer at The Boston Globe. 
A former resident of Poestenkill and Hull, Mr. Schmid eventually made his home in Greenville, NH, where he welcomed family and friends for loving visits, delicious food, and laughter. He was also an active member of the Sacred Heart Church in Greenville.
Grampa, as he was known, was a kind man who loved being in the company of others and enjoyed all things outdoors. He could often be found camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, and drinking Budweiser at a picnic table.
He leaves his devoted wife, Ruth V. Schmid; a son, John M. Schmid, and his wife, Meredith, of Hull; a daughter, Christine E. Schmid, and her husband, Jack MacEachern, of Rochester, NH; granddaughter Nicole Casse and her husband, Derrick, of Rollinsford, NH; grandsons Andrew and Daniel Schmid of Hull; and great-grandchildren Isabella, John, and Don Casse of Rollinsford, NH. He also leaves his cat, Buddy. Mr. Schmid lives on in the memory of many loving friends and family across the country.

Obituary: Mary Power

Mary M. [Cradock] Power, 84, died peacefully on April 1, surrounded by her loving children. 
Recently from Pembroke and previously from Hull, Mrs. Power was raised in Jamaica Plain. She attended Mission Church High School, where she met the love of her life, John “Beaver” Power. Together they built and shared a wonderful life centered around their dear family and friends. 
While she enjoyed several years working at Talbot’s, Mrs. Power’s life was devoted to raising her seven children and supporting her beloved family. Seeing and bringing out the best in others, she led her life with kindness, generosity, and love. With her contagious smile, a heart of gold, and an abundance of Irish hospitality, she leaves a legacy of love and many fond memories of gatherings over the years filled with food, songs, and laughter. 
Mrs. Power’s spirit and love will be carried on by her seven children and their partners: Pat and Neil Donovan of Bethel, ME, Jackie and Mary Power of Salem, NH, Chrissie and Eddie Straughn of Cohasset, Michael and Colleen Power of West Roxbury, Suey Power of Hull, Brian and Joan Power of Scituate, and Jay Power of Hingham. “Nana” leaves behind and will always be in the hearts of her 21 grandchildren and soon-to-be seven great-grandchildren. 
Predeceased by her sister, Patsy Perry, Mrs. Power leaves siblings Helen and Pat Doherty, Christine (and the late Jim) Tracey, Jim and Jean Cradock, Jack “Butchie” and Suzy Cradock; brother in-law Ronnie Perry; and many nieces, nephews, friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten.
Mrs. Power’s funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Thecla Church, 145 Washington St. in Pembroke. Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery at Bourne.

Obituary: Paul Manville

Paul N. Manville of East Bridgewater, formerly of Hull, died April 1. He was 89. 
Mr. Manville was a Navy veteran of World War II and worked for Grossman’s in Braintree for many years. He loved his family, enjoyed reading, and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox. 
Mr. Manville was a former member of the Hull Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered for his generous nature, great smile, and happy attitude. 
Beloved husband of the late Claire [Bazinet] Manville; loving father of Laurie Crowley and her husband, Edward, of Hyannis; cherished “Papa Dot” to Jimmy and Samantha Crowley of Hyannis; he also is survived by many nieces and nephews. 
Funeral services have been held, with burial at Hull Village Cemetery.

Obituary: Peter Mangan

Peter Anthony Mangan, 64, died March 24 in Montego Bay, Jamaica following a 20-year battle with cancer.
Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, he spent his adult years living in Massachusetts, primarily in Hull.
Mr. Mangan loved traditional Irish music, gardening, fishing, cooking, and had an insatiable interest in scientific discovery, but was devoted most of all to his children and grandchildren.
He was a woodworker by trade, taking great joy in all his work, but in particular building custom cabinetry, furniture, children’s toys, and solar collectors.
Mr. Mangan’s love for woodworking was eclipsed only by his devotion to the game of soccer. He spent many years as a volunteer coach for various youth soccer teams. He instilled a love for the game that lives on today in his players.
He leaves his son, Conor Mangan; his daughter, Tara Mangan; four grandchildren, Myles, Declan, Claire, and Cole Mangan; his sisters Nuala and Jean; and brother Gerry. He was predeceased by brothers Brian and Fergus.
A private memorial will be held by the family on April 16.

Obituary: Mario Bertone

Mario Bertone died April 4, after a period of declining health. He fought his illnesses with strength and dignity. He was 82.
A member of the Bricklayers Union Local 3 for more than 60 years, Mr. Bertone was a licensed master builder who left his trademark of excellence on projects throughout the state, including Nantascot Place Condominiums on George Washington Boulevard, which he built. He taught his craft to many young people who worked for him.
Mr. Bertone was a simple man, no pretense or false modesty. What you saw was what you got. He was honest and honorable, sincere, hardworking, had a sense of humor, and a strong determination, never giving up under any circumstances. He will be remembered for his intelligence, his ability to fix anything, his kindness, and for the wonderful advice he provided. He was a true patriot and served his country proudly as a member of the Army National Guard until his honorable discharge in July 1956. He was an avid New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan. But the most important part of Mario’s life was his family. He was a role model for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. 
The beloved husband of Joan [Spera] Bertone for 41 years; Mr. Bertone also leaves his children: Stephen, Richard, Laura, Donna, and Kenneth; 12 grandchildren; and two great granddaughters. The brother of John Bertone of Quincy, Mr. Bertone was predeceased by a son, Robert; two brothers, Sam and Antonio; and a sister, Maria. His friends are too numerous to mention, but each one knows how close they were to his heart. Both Mario and Joan are most grateful to their dear friend Lisa Zadrozny.

Obituary: Doris Matthews

Doris L. [Manning] Matthews of Braintree, formerly of Hull, died March 26, at the age of 61. 
Mrs. Matthews was the payroll supervisor at E.M. Duggan in Canton for many years. She was the first American to receive a double lung transplant about 30 years ago and was the longest surviving person to receive that procedure. Throughout the years, she was very supportive of other transplant patients. Mrs. Matthews was also a kidney transplant recipient and was eternally grateful to her brother in law Charlie for donating his kidney to her. 
She enjoyed traveling with family and crafts. She will be remembered as a happy, generous, hardworking, and optimistic person. 
Beloved wife of Donald P. Matthews; loving sister of Barbara Morris and husband, Charlie, of Hanover, Ruth Poirier and her late husband, Joe, of Franklin, Shirley Nolan and husband, Paul, of Braintree, and Edward Manning of Hollywood, FL; loving sister in law of Susan Garofalo and her late husband, George, of Plainville and James Matthews and wife, Janet, of Weymouth. Mrs. Matthews also is lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Obituary: Ruth White

Ruth A. White, a 60-year resident of Hull who recently lived in Hillsborough, N.C., died in the loving arms of her daughter, Robin, and caretaker and friend, Debra O'Day, on March 23. She was 93. Her loving granddaughter, Jennifer, was at her side for many of Mrs. White’s last joyful days. 
Mrs. White was married to Clarence “Carney” P. White of the Hull Highway Department for 65 years. She went to fashion design and art school in New York City, and was a Rockette in Manhattan in 1942. Until she was 83, Mrs. White worked at Talbots, Inc., Something Nice in Hingham, and was a master seamstress, working freelance for many great Boston-area designers. 
She made the world’s greatest apple pies for many establishments in the South Shore area, and was known far and wide for her gregarious sense of humor and upbeat spirit, despite all of life’s challenges. Her nickname of Mama Ruth was earned because of her unstoppable joy of life and love of children. To her last, her delightful disposition was contagious to all who knew her; even the hospice personnel enjoyed coming to see her most of all.
Mrs. White leaves her children: Ruth Malinowski and husband, Robert, of Stowe, Robert C. White of Scituate, Donald E. White and wife, Debbie, of Plymouth, Howard A. White and wife, Jean, of Maine, and Robin A. White and partner, Andrea Sutton, of Hillsborough, N.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Robert P. McNamara died Wednesday, March 23, at age 87.
A lifelong resident of Hull, Mr. McNamara was the owner and operator of the former Neal’s Service Station. He enjoyed following New England sports teams and was a member of the Hull Knights of Columbus. 
The foundation of his life was his family; they were the cornerstone of all that was truly important to him. He will be sadly missed. 
The beloved husband of Ida Fagone-McNamara of Hull and the late Elinor K. [Welsh] McNamara; he was the loving father of Ann McNamara and her husband, Walter Keenan, of South Boston, Patricia Spitz and her husband, Kurt, of Hull, and Robin Mannion and her husband, Andrew, of Dedham; the stepfather of Annette Agostino and her husband, Vincent, and Lisa Fagone and her husband, Robert Hatch, all of Hull. Mr. McNamara also leaves his brother, Joseph W. “Bill” McNamara and his wife Marjorie, of Hull; 12 grandchildren; and a great grandson. He was predeceased by his brother, George McNamara.

We will miss Virginia Tott's smile when we visit Wellspring's book store. Her obituary follows:

Virginia M. [Sylvester] Tott, 91, died peacefully on Saturday, March 19, at the John Scott House Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Braintree, surrounded by her loving family. 
Mrs. Tott was raised in East Braintree and was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Weymouth. She had enjoyed summers in Hull for many years prior to becoming a permanent resident in 2002. She had been employed for 10 years as a receptionist for the state Department of Corrections in Boston. She and her late husband, Herman, were the former owners of Quincy Adams Liquors. 
Mrs. Tott was an outgoing person who loved to be with people. 
She had a wonderful smile and was always attractively and tastefully dressed. She enjoyed the outdoors, the beach, and her many friends. She loved to host and to entertain. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed dancing and travelling. She was a member of the Hull Garden Club, the Friends of the Hull Public Library, and enjoyed doing volunteer work for the Wellspring Book Store for many years. She was also a former member of the Saint Thomas Moore Guild in Braintree. 
Beloved wife of the late Herman W. Tott; devoted mother of Nancy A. Santry and her late husband, George, of Quincy and Sandra M. Genoa and her husband, David, of Milford; loving grandmother of G. Daniel Santry of Winthrop, William L. Santry and Jennifer A. Santry, both of Quincy. One of four siblings, she was the sister of Alfred Sylvester of California and was pre-deceased by her brothers Robert and Richard. Mrs. Tott is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 
Funeral services will be conducted at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Ave., Quincy on Friday, March 25, beginning with visitation at 9:30 and the service at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow, at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. 
There will be a memorial Mass in Mrs. Tott’s memory at Saint Ann’s Church on Samoset Ave. on Saturday, April 2, at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Obituary: John E. Merry Jr.

John “Jack” E. Merry Jr., age 71, of Hull, formerly of Duxbury, died March 15, following a long illness. 
Born in Quincy, Mr. Merry was a Duxbury High School and Bridgewater State College graduate. He was a Vietnam War veteran and a self-employed entrepreneur with diversified interests, working in the IT business most recently as a project manager. 
Mr. Merry always enjoyed helping others, in particular delivering food for the elderly over the holidays. He loved flying, playing tennis, rollerblading, reading, and listening to music.
He is survived by his sons, Taylor Merry of San Francisco, and Nicholas Merry and Alexander Merry, both of Kingston. He also leaves his brothers, Richard Merry and his wife, Holly, of Halifax, and Ronald Merry of West Boylston. 
A Celebration of Life visitation will be held in the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., Plymouth, on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., followed by a memorial service in the funeral home at 8 p.m.

Arline A. [Colangeli] Meade of Abington entered into eternal rest March 19. She was 87.
Mrs. Meade was a Hull resident for many years. She enjoyed living by the beach, trips to the Hull library, and the community atmosphere here. She had a passion for music and especially enjoyed playing the piano. Mrs. Meade was an avid reader and a crossword puzzles buff. She will be remembered for her strong faith as a devoted Catholic.

Obituary: Vincent Bregoli

Hull resident Vincent E. Bregoli died unexpectedly Sunday, March 13. He was 23.
After graduating from Hull High School in 2011, Vincent furthered his education by studying audio production at The New England Institute of Art in Brookline, from which he graduated with an associate’s degree in 2015. At the time of his death, he was employed at Savant Corporation in Hyannis, specializing in home automation systems, all the while continuing his passion for singing/rapping and composing music/beats.
Many will remember Vincent's numerous performances while involved in the Hull High School Theatre Arts program. He began in sixth grade with a role as a street urchin in the musical "Scrooge," and finished strong in his final production as the lead role in "Willy Wonka." Another favorite activity included competing for the Hull High Forensics Team during his freshman and sophomore years. 
Vincent worked a number of jobs in Hull through the years. He worked alongside his Dad at the family hardware store on Nantasket Avenue since about the age of 15. In addition, he cooked at the BeachFire restaurant, The Red Parrot, and rocked the deli at the A Street Tedeschi’s.
While launching his own career performing as DJ Vinny B, Vincent shared his diverse musical talents at many local venues. The C-Note was a comfortable place for him to sing at open mic nights and later to host karaoke nights. He also DJ’d events at the Sea Dog Brew Pub and The Red Parrot’s Naked Oystah Bar. 
Along with his local gigs, he was honored to provide entertainment for a friend’s wedding, as well as multiple graduation and birthday parties. 
His quick wit and talents will be sadly missed, yet forever remembered. 
Beloved son of Mark E. Bregoli and Julie [Capen] Bregoli, of Hull; loving brother of Anna Lynne Bregoli of Hull; cherished grandson of Edmund G. Bregoli of Braintree, Patricia [Leahy] Capen of Hull, Beverly [Capen] O’Brien of Florida, and the late Martha [Duca] Bregoli, Dorothy R. [Jellows] Bregoli, and Robert C. Capen. Obituary: Regina S. Kilfoyle

Regina S. Kilfoyle, 58, of Hull, died of a degenerative neurological illness on Feb. 29, at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham.
Ms. Kilfoyle was the seventh of eight children of Dr. Richard M. and Eleanor M. Kilfoyle, of Weymouth. She was class president of the junior and senior class of 1975 from Marshfield High School. She enrolled in Boston College School of Nursing but, quickly realizing that nursing was not her calling, she transferred to the College of Liberal Arts. She graduated magna cum laude as a history major in 1980. 
Ms. Kilfoyle worked for many years as the de facto director of communications for the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. In her thirties, she decided that she needed an advanced degree. She was admitted to the London Business School’s Sloan Fellowship Masters Programme, earning an MSc in 1995. She was employed by Imperial Chemicals Industries in London after graduation, rising to the position of director of corporate communication. 
In the course of her career, for business as well as vacation travel, she spent time in Chile, India, Spain, South Africa, Tanzania, and many other points on the globe. She lived and worked in London for many years. 
Ms. Kilfoyle enjoyed warm friendships with many of her Marshfield High, B.C., and Sloan classmates, as well as her work colleagues.
She pursued multiple interests during her lifetime. She enjoyed international travel, photography, sewing, swimming, and running. She had a keen interest in the American Civil War, and she toured many battlefields in the South during her US vacations. She was a devoted aunt and godmother, and she made a point to attend as many First Communions, Confirmations, and graduations as possible. 
Predeceased by her parents, she is survived by her seven siblings; 12 nieces and nephews, of whom several were her godchildren; two grandnieces; a grandnephew; and numerous cousins.

Justin “Jay” J. Doyle of Hull, died unexpectedly March 4. He was 61. 
Mr. Doyle worked for Boston Public Schools as a custodian for many years. He was an avid scuba diver and loved all water activities. Jay enjoyed coin collecting, scratch tickets, and anything he did with his family. His main passion was his family, especially his granddaughter, who was the newest light of his life.

Obituary: Richard “Dickie” F. Nielsen

Hull resident Richard “Dickie” F. Nielsen died March 2, at age 82.

Mr. Nielsen graduated from Watertown High School and later earned a certificate as an electrical technician. He worked for Raytheon in Quincy for more than 45 years. 
Mr. Nielsen was a Navy veteran who served during the Korean War in an aircraft carrier. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching Notre Dame football and the University of Connecticut girls basketball team. He loved dogs and spent time training police dogs. 
Beloved husband of the late Dolores [Boudreau] Nielsen; loving father of Michelle “Mish” Nielsen and Bernard “Bernie” Nielsen, both of Hull; cherished grandfather of Dakota Ruscansky; devoted brother of Mary, Eleanor, and the late Theodore "Fluffy", Bernard, Theresa, and Edward; caring brother-in-law of Rita Nielsen; also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Sherry I. Satter

Sherry Irene [Siegel] Satter died March 5. She was 69.

Ms. Satter succeeded in maintaining a great quality of life in spite of many hurdles because of her indomitable spirit – and over the past five years – the love and support of her best friend, Donald Goldstein. She will be mourned by her devoted family and friends.

As her Dad used to sing to the young Sherry, “Good night, Irene. Good night, Irene. I’ll see you in my dreams.” Rest in peace.

Services were held today at the Stanetsky Memorial Chapel in Canton, followed by interment at Sharon Memorial Park. Memorial observance will be at the home of Amy and Craig Feld today and then at her late residence on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Obituary: Marie Tobin

We are sad to report Marie Tobin's death. She was feisty, she was funny, and she was a true blue friend. Best of all, she was bluntly outspoken. You always knew where you stood with Marie. We will miss her. Her obituary follows:

Marie “DiDi” [Smolinsky] Tobin, a longtime Hull resident, died after a long illness on Saturday, Feb. 27, at Harbor House, Hingham. She was 88.
Mrs. Tobin enjoyed traveling and was an avid Hull Pirates football fan. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren play football, soccer, and basketball. She also rooted for the Patriots and Celtics. 
Mrs. Tobin leaves her husband, James Tobin; her children, Kerri Tirrell, Marie Lambert, Gerard Tirrell, and Scott Tirell; grandchildren Brianna Duhaime, Connor Duhaime, and Nichole Burke and her husband, Joe; great grandchildren Jacob and Alyssa Burke; four stepchildren, James, Lorraine, Michael, and Susan; and many extended family members. 
Mrs. Tobin was cremated, per her wishes. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at St. Ann’s Church.

Obituary: Carri O'Hare Goldstein

Former Hull resident Carri O’Hare Goldstein died unexpectedly on Feb. 2. She was 37 and was living in Spring Hill, Florida at the time of her death.
Mrs. Goldstein leaves her husband, Jason C. Goldstein of Florida and Hull; three children, Derek O’Hare, Harleigh Goldstein, and Kyira Goldstein; a grandson, Dakota O’Hare; her parents, Donna and Robert O’Hare; a sister, Kelli O’Hare; two brothers, Daniel O’Hare and Brandon O’Hare; and many extended family members. 
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, from 1-4 p.m., at the Weymouth Eagles, 1388 Washington St., Weymouth.
