Obituary: Marie McElroy Jenkin

Marie McElroy Jenkins, 93

Marie McElroy Jenkins  died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 31 at age 93.

A long-time resident of Hull Mrs. Jenkins loved everything about the ocean and could frequently be seen “going for her walk” well into her 90s. A registered nurse from the last class of Mt. Auburn Hospital’s WWII cadet nurses, Mrs. Jenkins cared for thousands of people during her lifetime, working at Massachusetts General Hospital, several South Shore hospitals, in post-acute care, and providing hospice care for low-income residents of Boston. Her competency and compassion were legendary, and notes of gratitude from patients and their families were a familiar sight.

Mrs. Jenkins is survived by her five children, Christine Simoneau-Hales of Saratoga, Denise Writesel, of San Diego, Leslie Cannon of Norwell, Jaime Writesel of Billings, and Maria Writesel, her enthusiastic beach companion and later, caregiver, also of Hull. Her wonderful sense of humor, work ethic and love of life were gleefully shared with grandchildren, Mark Simoneau, Shelby Kamath, Jonathan and Brittany Cannon, Lhanna, Sophia and James Writesel, and great grandchildren Carwen Simoneau and Ayan Kamath.

She will be missed for her wit, wisdom, and independent spirit. Friends and family are invited to a remembrance gathering on Saturday, February 12, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Common Market Restaurant, 97 Willard St., Quincy.
