Memorial fund pays tribute to late Hull music teacher Robert Ziegner

In the weeks since retired Hull Public Schools music teacher and band director Robert Ziegner died at age 92, former students and colleagues have launched a memorial fund to pay tribute to Mr. Ziegner and assist current students.

According to Hull High School alumnus Stu Turgel, who had stayed in contact with his former teacher, Mr. Ziegner died on Aug. 24, 2023 at a hospital near his home in Las Vegas following an onset of COVID19 earlier in the month.

“Bob was an extraordinary music teacher and led the band at Hull High School with great accomplishment and achievement,” Turgel wrote in tribute. “But as great a teacher as he was, he was an even finer man. He left an indelible mark on every student he taught, regardless of their musical proficiency.”

Turgel said he spoke with current Hull High music teacher Ian Barkon, and the school department has approved the creation of the Robert Ziegner Memorial Fund. Donations will be used for scholarships, the purchase of musical instruments and equipment, or other financial needs of the Hull High School Band, Turgel said. Funds also may assist students in financial need with music lessons and other support to help develop young musicians.

“The outpouring of tributes and expressions of sympathy for Bob Ziegner has been extraordinary,” Turgel said. “I hope those who knew and admired Bob, or just knew about his decades of devoted service to Hull High School and the Town of Hull, will consider making a generous donation to honor Bob’s legacy as a band leader, music teacher, and mentor extraordinaire.”

Donations payable to Hull High School (note Robert Ziegner Memorial Fund in the memo line of the check) can be sent Hull High School, Attn: Ian Barkon, 180 Main St, Hull, MA 02045.

Services for Mr. Ziegner have not been announced, but messages of condolence and support may be sent to Mr. Ziegner’s family in care of his wife: Julie Ziegner, 20 Bon Rea Circle, Las Vegas, NV 89110.

Obituary: Barbara O'Brien

Barbara O’Brien, at 91

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Barbara (MacDonnell) O’Brien.

Born on January 23, 1932 to Angus and Helen (Campbell), she peacefully left this world on August 27, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She leaves behind a legacy of deep faith and an immeasurable love of family and friends, two elements that defined her remarkable character and provided her family with a primer on how to live an exceptional life.

A devoted wife, Mrs. O’Brien was married for 70 years, a testament to the enduring love and commitment that she shared with her beloved husband, Edward. Together, they built a life enriched with seven children, who in turn blessed them with numerous grandchildren, forming a close-knit family that embodied unity and compassion.

Mrs. O’Brien grew up on Maple Street in West Roxbury, and as a young girl she spent many summers on Prince Edward Island on the family farm, where she nurtured her love of animals. After graduating from Roslindale High School, she entered the nursing program at Faulkner Hospital. Her nurturing spirit led her to become a source of comfort and care for those in need throughout her lifetime.

Her talents were as diverse as they were impressive. Mrs. O’Brien possessed a voice that resonated not only within the walls of her home but also through the airwaves, where as a young woman she graced the radio waves with her melodious singing.

In the early 1950s, Mrs. O’Brien met the love of her life, and so began the love story of Barb & Ed. They were married on September 7, 1953 and moved to Baumholder, Germany, where Mr. O’Brien was stationed. On October 26, 1954, their oldest son, John, was born.

When they returned from Germany, the O’Briens settled on Sunset Point in Hull, where they would raise their family. On “the Point” they not only found a home, they also met neighbors who would become lifelong friends.

Being an only child, Mrs. O’Brien remained very close with her parents, which helped to foster a close and loving relationship between them and her children. In the summer months, she would send the kids down to the bay to watch for Nana and Grampie on the Boston boat as they made their way to Steamboat Wharf for a visit. Her love of family was fiercely strong and she passed the importance of this love to her own children and grandchildren.

After raising their family, Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien made a pivotal life decision in 1985 to purchase Jake’s Seafood Restaurant from their dear friend Dot Jacobson in their hometown of Hull. It afforded them an exciting new chapter later in life, and also an opportunity to build a business with their youngest son, Jim. In 1986, Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien ventured south and built a beautiful home in Naples, Florida. The house provided a gathering place for her ever-growing family, where countless memories were forged and new friendships were made under the Florida sun.

Mrs. O’Brien’s boundless commitment to family, faith, community, and personal growth made her an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a tapestry of love, strength, and compassion that will continue to shape the lives of those she touched. As we bid farewell to a life well lived, may we celebrate the joy she brought, the lessons she imparted, and the enduring love she shared.

Mrs. O’Brien is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Edward; her sons, John (Patti), Michael (Carol), Tom (Lisa), Jim (Paula); and her daughters, Barbie (Bill), Mary, and Linda (Roger). She also leaves 16 grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, both locally and afar.

A Funeral Mass will be held Friday in St. Mary of the Assumption Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. O’Brien’s family asks that you please consider a donation to St. Mary of the Assumption Parish, 204 Samoset Ave., Hull, MA 02045.

Obituary: Russell J. Goulart Sr.

Russell J. Goulart Sr., at 55

Russell Joseph Goulart Sr., 55, of Hull died on Aug. 14, 2023, in the hospital suddenly and unexpectedly.
Born in Boston on Nov. 23, 1967, he was the devoted and loving father of Russell Joseph Goulart, Jr. of Hull and the son of Barbara Bogart Goulart of Hull and the late Russell Edward Goulart, who lived in Florida.
Mr. Goulart was a father first in all that he did. He also cared for his extended family and friends. Life brought a variety of passions and careers. As a child, building ramps with plywood and bricks to propel their BMX bikes into the air, Russ and his younger brother, Joshua, fostered his love of fun and adventure. His love of cars led him to auto mechanics. He loved to explore the ocean, the islands of Boston Harbor, and the campgrounds of New England, and he spent countless occasions sharing these passions with his loved ones. Then life moved him to become an EMT and beyond, where he showed his ability to put people at ease as he cared for them. The love of hockey was always a part of Mr. Goulart’s life. He was either playing, coaching, or being an EMT during games at rinks. Mr. Goulart’s greatest gift may have been his smile and his ability to love those around him and make them feel loved.

Remembering a unique Hull character on the 40th anniversary of his passing

Tribute by George L. Anastos

August 9 marked the 40th anniversary of the passing of my father, Louis G. Anastos, a.k.a. “Papa Lou.”

After leaving the Coast Guard after WWII, he took over his father’s business, the Apollo Spa. I can remember going down to open the Spa as a four-year-old at 5 a.m. I would go home and I would see him at 5 p.m., but not for long. He would go back to work and come home at midnight.

This went on seven days a week in the summertime. During the off season, he’d be home at 10 p.m. He served the town 364 days a year. At Thanksgiving, there were Table Talk pies for the townsfolk. At Easter, he made baskets and decorated the shelves with them. In those days, everybody came in the store, from bankers to bookies.

So, for all the old-timers who remember, and all the new folks who don’t, I want to honor a man they just don’t make anymore – my father.

As a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, every year he was the perfect, jolly Santa Claus, enchanting the children of Hull.  Dr. Fay made everyone feel like family, and he was lovingly called “uncle to us all.”

Dr. Fay loved helping people, and often remarked how he had found his calling in the profession of optometry, and he enjoyed every single day of his career. His kindness and generosity will always be remembered, as well as his dedication to his communities both in Hull and in Florida.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during a visitation Monday, June 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Church, 208 Samoset Ave. A Celebration of Life will begin at 10:30 a.m.  Burial will be private.

The family would like to thank all the staff at St Joseph’s Manor in Brockton for their outstanding care. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations in Uncle Jerry’s memory be made to St. Joseph Manor Health Care, a nonprofit organization, 215 Thatcher St., Brockton, MA 02302.

Obituary: Brendan Geary

Brendan Geary, at 49

Brendan Geary, a longtime Hull resident, passed away on Father’s Day.

Born on Nov. 28, 1973, he was 49 years old. Mr. Geary spent many early days wearing out the pedals of his Big Wheel through the Arnold Arboretum, where his mother was the librarian. He and his mother then moved to the South Shore, where he attended Hanover schools before moving to Hull. Mr. Geary worked as a computer scientist, as well as an all-around Renaissance man, doing a little bit of everything for a long line of friends, many of them Hullonians. He never hesitated to remark upon how grateful he was to live in a town where people stood up, by, and for each other like family.

Mr. Geary might say his greatest accomplishment was being a father to his son, Shane Geary, a second-class petty officer at Naval Base Ventura County, Calif., of whom he was immensely proud and whom he loved boundlessly.

Mr. Geary also leaves behind his mother, Sheila Connor, of Hull, his uncles Jay Connor of Cambridge, and Mark Connor and his wife, Lee, of Lexington, along with his cousins Sarah and Emily. Visiting hours will be held Saturday, June 24, from 4-8 p.m. at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wellspring Multi-Service Center, 814 Nantasket Ave., Hull, or at wellspringmultiservice.org.

She loved visiting casinos and held a time-share in Las Vegas for more than 25 years. Mrs. Pearson was an avid bowler, loved knitting, crocheting, and making rugs. Obituary: James M. Tobin

James M. Tobin, at 78

James M. “Jim” Tobin passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, from complications of Polycystic Kidney Disease. He was 78.

He was born and raised in Cambridge, where he attended Cambridge High and Latin School and met his future wife ,Mary Bernadette (Travers) Tobin. Mr. Tobin moved his family to Hull in 1971. He always said it was the best move he ever made.

Mr. Tobin was an environmentalist, a fiscal conservative, town activist, volunteer, dedicated public official, and above all, he had unquestionable commitment to the people of Hull. He has often thanked his family members for their patience and understanding that allowed him to pursue his many endeavors helping the people of Hull.

Mr. Tobin’s story begins in 1979, when he was elected to the Hull Board of Assessors. He was again elected in 1982, 1985, and 1988, serving for 11 years, many as chairman.

In 1988 Mr. Tobin was appointed by Gov. Michael Dukakis to serve for a three-year term on the state board that oversees the Department of Environmental Management. In 1990, he was elected as a selectman for a one-year term. In 1992, he was elected again for a three-year term and chosen by his peers as chairman.

As a member and past chairman of the Hull Democratic Town Committee for more than 40 years, Mr. Tobin worked tirelessly for just about every Democratic candidate. He was also the chairman of Co-Op 6, which was made up of several Democratic Town Committees in the Norfolk and Plymouth County senatorial districts. In 1997, he received the Democrat of the Year Award in recognition of his commitment to the Democratic Party from U.S. Congressman Bill Delahunt. In 1999, he was appointed to Hull’s advisory board. In 2010, Mr. Tobin retired from the advisory board after being appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick as the state’s representative on the Hull Redevelopment Authority for a five-year term, where he assumed the duties as its treasurer.

In 2014, he was presented with the Hull Hero Award in recognition as an outstanding role model for volunteerism and dedication to the Hull community. In 2015, Mr. Tobin was again appointed by the Republican governor, Charles Baker, to serve another five-year term on the Hull Redevelopment Authority, again as its treasurer, and then again 2020.

Not all of Mr. Tobin’s life was politics and volunteering. He was employed by AC&S Co. for 25 years and provided technical supervision on job sites throughout New England. He was also on the executive board for Local #6 Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers Union.

In 1996, a serious health issue forced him to retire. He was diagnosed with PKD – Polycystic Kidney Disease. In 1999, he finally received a new kidney from an unexpected place – the transplant would come from Bernadette, his ex-wife at that time. He was forever grateful to Bernadette for giving him many more years to enjoy his family. The two were remarried shortly after this noble, selfless act of love.

After Mr. Tobin’s transplant, his health improved and he was able to go back to work, again doing what he loved to do best, helping people. He was hired by the Plymouth County Registry of Deeds, and retired from the Registry in 2010 to spend more time with his wife, two daughters, and five granddaughters.

He loved spending time with his family on Nantasket Beach and kayaking on the Weir River behind his home. Throughout his life, the most important thing to him was his family. He worked two jobs most of his life to provide the best life possible for his wife and two daughters. Loving his children and five wonderful granddaughters made him the happiest, most grateful and proudest Papa on Earth. With all his accomplishments in life, having a loving family was always a top priority to him.

For the last couple of years, the family would vacation in Florida and take cruises to the Bahamas together. He enjoyed almost every opening game at Fenway he could with his brother Francis, and carried on that tradition with his daughters and grandchildren. He spent countless hours studying his family genealogy and his Irish heritage. In his retirement, he always said, “I have the best of both worlds, living in Hull in the summer and spending the winters in Jupiter, Florida.”

He will forever be missed by his wife, Bernadette, whom he married twice, first for 25 years and again after his kidney transplant for 14 years.

Mr. Tobin was a loving and dedicated father to his daughters, Michelle Tobin Gill of Whitman and Bernadette Tobin of Abington, also the loving grandfather (PaPa) to Olivia and Fiona Gill of Whitman and Amanda, Allison, and Andrea Daley of Abington.

He was the son of the late Francis J. and Ann E. (Riley) Tobin of Cambridge. He was predeceased by brothers Francis X. Tobin and John J. Tobin. He will be missed by his brother William E. Tobin of Melrose, and will be remembered by his closest sibling, Helen Tobin Clancy, and his three nieces and their families: Sandra Snow, Cindi and Kurt Carlson, and Pam and Ronald Rotondo. He leaves a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pat and Frank Macdonald, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends and associates.

Visiting hours were held on Wednesday. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham, at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 8

prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial in Hull Village Cemetery.
