Obituary: John E. Conwell

John E. Conwell, 75
John E. (“Denny”) Conwell, of Boston and Hull, died on July 27 at age 75.
A graduate of Georgetown University and Suffolk Law School, he served in the U.S. Army, the Registry of Motor Vehicles, the Massachusetts State Police, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and the law firm of Bulger & Finnerty. For 20 years, he maintained a solo legal practice.
Denny was an early supporter of the civil rights movement and a firm believer in the Fourth and Sixth Amendments. His business card read: “Tired of pleading guilty?”
He was always ready for trial in his law practice, which included more than 20 murder trials, and he was willing to represent all comers. His proudest legal accomplishment was a challenge to the Boston Police Department policy of “search on sight” (Commonwealth v. Lamar Phillips, Supreme Judicial Court, 1992).
Denny loved playground basketball (his street name was “Doc”), criminal law, Pall Mall unfiltered, and Barbara. A head injury forced his early retirement, and in recent years he struggled with health issues. He did not go gentle into that good night.
He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 51 years, and heartbroken pets, Watson and the Skunk.
Friends are invited to raise a glass in his memory on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 7-9 p.m., at Jo’s Nautical Bar in Hull.

Obituary: Greg Bennett

Greg Bennett, at 62
Greg Bennett – brother, brother-in-law, uncle, godfather, and a friend to many – passed away unexpectedly on July 19.
Greg lived as he died: on his own terms. Those terms included his insistence that there be no wake, no funeral, and no burial. Instead, he requested his ashes be spread at sea, where he was most at peace in this world.
Greg grew up in Hull and spent the last 11 years of his life here. In between, Greg proudly served his country for over a decade as an Army Green Beret in the 1st Special Forces, stationed primarily in Europe. Unfortunately, his Army career ended when he blew out both of his knees on a mountainside in Norway during a HALO (High Altitude, Low Open) parachute jump. He would endure multiple, painful knee replacements thereafter.
After the Army, Greg attended and graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology. His Army security clearance made him an attractive candidate for manufacturers and installers of military-related technology, an industry he continued to work in for the remainder of his life.
Greg’s personal interests were varied and, like his military career, took him around the world. He was a certified dive instructor and would frequently host or participate in diving trips to some of the most exotic locations on earth. He was also an avid licensed amateur radio operator and an accomplished photographer/videographer, for which he was featured on the front cover of The Hull Times just two weeks ago.
Greg was a familiar figure to anyone who attended or watched a town government meeting or broadcast during the past decade. Wherever a video camera was needed—from Selectmen and School Committee meetings to countless other events—Greg would be there in his trademark shorts, regardless of the weather.
And, of course, no remembrance of Greg would be complete without mention of his beloved ferrets, which he always referred to as his “kids.” He rescued, cared for, and kept a number of ferrets over the years. They were emblematic of his overall love for wildlife and nature in general.
Despite his Santa-like charm and outwardly cheerful nature, Greg suffered from a lifelong asthma affliction, PTSD from his military service, he had lost a kidney to cancer, and had recently learned his remaining kidney was failing. He did not want to suffer through dialysis and knew he was an unlikely candidate for a transplant given his age and health issues. He always spoke about “quality over quantity” in regards to his time on earth. God rest his soul.
Greg was the son of the late James M. Bennett and the late Carole M. (Leary) Bennett of Hull. He is survived by his brother James B. Bennett of Whitman; his sister Heather B. Falletti and brother-in-law Paul Falletti of Hull; and his brother Matt Bennett and sister-in-law Debbe Bennett of Hull. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.
Donations in Greg’s memory may be made to Greenpeace at greenpeacefund.org.

She was the loving grandmother of Patrick Callahan, of Georgia, and Emily Giuggio and her husband, Carmine, of Framingham. She leaves eight great-grandchildren: Katie, Kyle, Allison, Sean, Gavin, Carmine, Callum, and Evan, and one great-great-grandchild, Nicholas.
She is also survived by her close cousins, Marguerite Footit, of Wareham, and Joyce Foley, of Medfield. She leaves behind many other relatives and friends, including Deborah McGough, of Middleborough; Frank Forrest, of Weymouth; and Josephine Lewis, of Hull, (who helped immensely with Eileen’s care during the last years of her life). Close neighbors always watched out for her and helped when needed. Her family thanks all who helped her, including the staff at Queen Anne Nursing Home where she spent her last days.
Eileen loved her potted flowers and vegetable garden. She was an avid walker and enjoyed long walks along the shoreline. She was loving and strong and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday, from 3-7 p.m., in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central Street), Hingham. A funeral Mass will be Monday in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church, Hull, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
As we all know, Eileen was very generous in her life and loved to help others. If you would like, please feel free to make a donation to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. See www.Keohane.com or call 1-800-Keohane for directions and online condolences.

Obituary: Karin Indira Nauth-Shelley

Karin Indira Nauth-Shelley, 53
Karin Indira Nauth-Shelley, of Hull, passed away at her home on July 13 at the age of 53. She was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on June 7, 1966.
She was the beloved wife of Dr. Simon Shelley, the sister of Roger Nauth, and the daughter of Rev. Thelma Nauth and the late Rev. Beale Nauth.
A world traveler, Karin was interested in diverse cultures and people and loved the international arena, working and traveling throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. This worldliness was not surprising as Karin had moved with her family to the United States from Jamaica in 1976 at the age of 10. She would remain passionate about her heritage, including her Jamaican background. She had also lived in Guyana, her father’s birthplace.
Karin grew up in the Boston area where her father, formerly a lawyer, was a Methodist minister who moved to various parishes in eastern and western Massachusetts. She attended middle school at Saint Kevin’s Academy in Dorchester and high school in Braintree.
After her premedical studies at Boston University, Karin began her career in medical and psychology research for Boston area hospitals. She transitioned to the management consulting field, obtained an M.B.A. in marketing and organizational development at Simmons University, and worked with top global firms in Boston and Cambridge.
Karin then achieved what would become her passion, leading marketing for several global consulting and technology companies based in Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay area, India, and Argentina. Most recently, she was proud to support her husband in launching and fundraising for his biotechnology venture based in Boston.
Karin volunteered for the Hull Artists Association, supporting strategic development, branding, and the relaunch of the website for the nonprofit organization. She loved Hull and its surrounding areas, enjoying meeting friends for yoga and other activities on Nantasket Beach.
Karin made a tremendous impact on the lives of her family and countless friends and was always the one to whom they would turn. During her nearly five-year battle with cancer, Karin fought bravely and never gave up, even when her physicians suggested the end of her life might be near. Always thinking of others first and having steadfast faith in God, she was the biggest inspiration for most of the lives she touched. Karin’s smile was the window to her soul, shining bright with love and generosity and lighting and warming all around her. Karin’s heart of gold rests in eternal love and peace.
A memorial service for Karin will be held on Saturday, July 27, at North River Community Church, 334 Old Oak St., Pembroke, starting at 11 a.m. For additional information and online guestbook, please go to www.DowningChapel.com.

Obituary: Angela Lanoue

Angela Lanoue, at 51
On Thursday, July 4, 2019, Angela Kuhn Lanoue, loving wife of Christopher J. Lanoue, passed away. Angela was born on September 12, 1967 in Houston, Texas, where her loving parents, Anthony “Tony” and Glendeline Kuhn, reside.
Even from the beginning, Angela lived life to the fullest. She loved to perform, filling her childhood years with twirling and dancing. She also loved to spend time with family, enjoying summers and holidays with her cousins and grandparents in Texas.
Angela graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in marketing and organizational psychology and had a successful career in healthcare sales. Her career took her Philadelphia briefly, before bringing her to Boston.
Although rooting for the Texas Rangers was in Angela’s blood, the Boston Red Sox won her over and she became a die-hard Red Sox fan, with Big Papi being her most beloved player. Angela adopted the city of Boston as her own.
On September 17, 2005, she married Chris, who was the love of her life. Following their marriage, Angela and Chris lived in New York City and Rotterdam, but ultimately ended up back in Boston, the city Angela loved. In the early evenings, you would often find her walking her yellow lab, Jetson, down the Commonwealth Avenue mall. With a quick humor and just the slightest Texas accent, everyone she encountered along the way would be engaged with her in minutes. Wherever she lived, she always knew everyone in the neighborhood.
Angela was well-known for her elegance and sense of style, which was second to none. She had a passion and an eye for creating the perfect home, evident wherever she and Chris lived, but no more so than in their home in Hull where they moved five years ago. While always a city person, Angela loved the ocean and was happiest near the water. She loved watching the sunset over the water from her deck and some of her favorite trips were to Hawaii with Chris, where she fell in love with humpback whales.
During the years of her illness, Angela was always surrounded by family and friends, whom she loved deeply traveling the world with them  Her strength to fight through her illness was driven by her love of life and her love for her husband. She leaves a huge hole in the hearts of the many whom loved her.
Angela was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Edward and Antonia Stibora, and her paternal grandparents, Leo and her adored Bernice “Granny” Kuhn, whom she spoke of often and fondly. She is survived by her husband, Chris, her parents, Tony and Glendeline, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. on July 20, 2019, at the Arlington Street Church in Boston. The service will be followed by a reception at Chris and Angela’s home in Hull beginning at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute or the Pacific Whale Foundation.
