Obituary: Maura E. Chancey

Maura E. Chancey, at 51
Maura E. (Boudrot) Chancey, of Hingham, died of natural causes in her sleep at her home on May 4, at the age of 51.
Mrs. Chancey worked for Hadge Law in Dedham for more than 15 years. She was an avid horse lover and loved to travel with her husband Philip. Although she could not come up with a name for her boat, she loved spending time on it and kayaking to her mooring. 
Mrs. Chancey was a sensitive soul who always looked out for others and put her son and family first.
She is survived by her husband and best friend, Phillip Chancey, and their son Joshua Chancey, of Hingham. Predeceased by her father, William A Boudrot, in 2011, she is survived by her mother, Margaret Boudrot, of Hull, and her siblings, William A. Boudrot Jr., of Hull, and Paula Swedock and her husband, Joseph, of Scituate. Mrs. Chancey was a loving aunt to Michala (Mia) Dini. She also leaves her paternal aunt, Helen Donegan, of Marshfield, and many cousins.  
A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 10, at 10 a.m., at Resurrection Church, 1057 Main St., Hingham. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, from 5-8 p.m., at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. In honor of Maura, feel free to wear the color purple in a show of support and love.

Obituary: Kenneth R. Presley

Kenneth R. Presley, at 83
Kenneth Robert Presley died April 25, at age 83. 
Born in Weymouth, he served his country proudly in the U.S. Army for more than 24 years, during both the Korean and Vietnam war eras. He retired in 1980.
Beloved husband of the late Deborah (Derosier) Presley and the late Grace (Balser) Presley, who was from Hull, Mr. Presley leaves his children: James and his wife, Tracey DePhillips, of Weymouth; Lisa Carpenter of Marshfield; Joseph and his wife, Theresa, of Marshfield; and Robert Presley, of Weymouth.
He was the brother of Carol Scannell, of Florida, the grandfather of 11, and great-grandfather of three.

Obituary: Lynn Johnson

Lynn Johnson, at 37
Hull resident Lynn Johnson died Tuesday, April 23. She was 37 and had struggled with mental illnesses for more than 20 years. 
Ms. Johnson was born in Boston and over the years had lived in Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. She graduated from New Jersey’s Eastern Regional High School in 1999.
Ms. Johnson enjoyed listening to music, watching movies, and keeping up with pop culture. She was a Boston sports fan, and her favorite teams were the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. In high school, she enjoyed playing field hockey. An animal lover, her favorites were cats and dogs. 
The daughter of the late Ann Marie (Rudgis) and William E. Johnson, she was the sister of Gail Whitcomb-Richman and her husband, James, of Hull; Kathy Hallsen and her husband, William, of Weymouth; and Terri Johnson of Hull. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Obituary: Anna C. Richardson

Anna C. Richardson, at 83
Anna C. (Papasodero) Richardson, of Hull, died April 19. She was 83.
Mrs. Richardson worked as a contract negotiator for the U.S. government for more than 30 years before retiring. She also worked for the Environmental Protection Agency for 10 years and additionally in auctions part-time. 
She enjoyed gardening, swimming, and traveling to Italy. She was an avid bingo player and racquetball state champion and had recently signed up to participate in the Quincy Senior Olympics, which she medaled in, in previous years. She collected and loved clocks, owning more than 50 of them. 
Mrs. Richardson was kind and gracious, often opening her door to anyone who needed her. She was “Auntie Anna” to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her and an honorary mom to a lucky few. She will be deeply missed.  
She was the beloved mother of Victoria Richardson, of Arizona, and the late Michael “JoJo” Richardson. She was the cherished grandmother of Carla Nee, of Scituate; Michael Joseph Shea, of Rhode Island; Elicia Richardson, of Weymouth; James Richardson, of Hull; and great-grandmother to five. She also was the loving sister of Elizabeth Ferris and the late James Papasodero, Anthony “Tony” Papasodero, John Papasodero, Mary Emmanuello, and baby Joseph Papasodero. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Valerie Kaufman

Valerie Kaufman, at 62
Valerie (Sherman) Kaufman entered into rest, at the age of 62, on April 14 after a period of failing health. 
She was the beloved wife of Wayne Kaufman and devoted mother of Jonathan Kaufman and his wife, Emily, and Margo Solomon and her husband, Robert; she was the cherished grandmother of Evan, Jake, Sydney, and Jason.
Mrs. Kaufman was preceded in death by her parents, Myron and Evelyn (Lack) Sherman; her brother, Lawrence (“Woody”) Sherman; her sister, Claire Sherman; and her canine companion, Li’l Baby, aka “Stinky.”
Services were held Tuesday at Temple Emanuel in Newton. Interment was at Sharon Memorial Park.

Obituary: John F. Dever

John F. Dever, at 80
John (“Jack”) F. Dever, of Hull, formerly of South Boston, died peacefully April 14. He was 80.
A proud son of South Boston, Mr. Dever was a U.S. Army veteran, a retired Boston Public Schools teacher, and a coach. 
Starting as a teen, he worked at the L Street Bathhouse in South Boston. He was an avid year-round swimmer and a past president of the L Street Brownies. In fact, as a caption in a Yankee magazine article about the Brownies noted in 2009, “The intrepid Jack Dever never misses his daily swim, whether he’s home in Hull on Nantasket Beach, or dipping into the surf near his condo in Fort Lauderdale, or checking in with his fellow Brownies at L Street Beach in South Boston.”
Mr. Dever was one of the original founders of South Boston Youth Hockey and coached that sport for many years. He was later inducted into the South Boston Sports Hall of Fame as a coach. In addition, he was the head hockey coach at Hyde Park High School and coached swimming for many years at the John D. O’Bryant School in Boston.
The beloved son of the late John F. and Evelyn N. (Kelleher) Dever, he was the loving brother of Kathleen Dever, of Hingham; Paul and his wife, Barbara Dever, of North Easton; and Diane and her husband, James Kennedy, of Marshfield. Mr. Dever also is survived by 11 loving nieces and nephews as well as 12 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Obituary: Lily P. Harrison

Lily P. Harrison, at 84
Lily Patricia (“Pat”) Harrison, of Hull, died peacefully on April 6. She was 84.
Born in England to Sarah Annie (Ardley) Osmond and Albert Thomas Osmond, she was the oldest of their three children. Growing up on the southern coast of England during World War II, her family frequently moved to safer locations, which resulted in Pat attending numerous schools, many of which no longer exist. She attended St. Nicholas College in Chislehurst, England, graduating with a legal secretary certificate, and began working at the firm of Slaughter & May in London. 
On July 2, 1955, she married her dancing partner and love of her life, Norman Bodiam Harrison, whose love of travel brought her to settle in Bridgewater, Mass., in 1964; they lived there for more than 30 years and raised their two children, Christopher Norman and Caroline Jane. 
After Mrs. Harrison retired as a legal secretary from the law firm of Ropes & Gray in Boston, she and Norman returned home to East Peckham in Kent, England, where they enjoyed the company of friends and family. 
After the passing of her beloved Norman in 2007, Mrs. Harrison moved back to the United States at the age of 80, motivated by her desire to spend time with her one and only grandchild, Campbell Paige, of Hingham, and her four-legged grandchildren, Zach and Zoe. She settled into a seaside condo in Hull, where she enjoyed the sounds of waves and breathtaking sunsets during the past three years. 
Mrs. Harrison is survived by her son, Christopher, daughter-in-law, Carolyn, and granddaughter, Campbell, all of Hingham, and many extended family members who live in England.

Judith E. Campbell, at 76 
Judith E. (Allan) Campbell, of Hanover, died April 4 at age 76.
Mrs. Campbell, or “Judy,” raised her family in Hingham before moving to Hull and then Hanover. She worked for 31 years at Macy’s and 20 years at Talbots. She loved being at the beach and enjoyed traveling, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. 
Daughter of the late Frederick and Irene Allan and wife of the late Charles R. Campbell, she was the mother of Tracey Busony and her husband, Curt, of Vermont; Lauren Vasiliadis and her husband, Stephen, of Hull; and Charles Campbell and his wife, Kristine, of Hanover. 
She was the sister of Frederick Allan, of Plymouth; Nana of Sean Walsh, Nicole Walsh, Kylie Campbell, and Charlie Campbell; and great-Nana to Aidan McKeen. She is also survived by two nieces, Jennifer Kelley, of Duxbury, and Kristin Millette, of Plymouth.

Marilyn H. Fernandez, at 64
Marilyn “Mina” H. (Ripley) Fernandez, of Holbrook, formerly of Hull, died peacefully March 21, surrounded by her loving family. She was 64. 
Born in Nova Scotia, Mrs. Fernandez graduated from Holliston High School and Quincy College. She was an artist and gemologist who created her own jewelry. She was an animal lover and loved spending time at the ocean. 
The beloved wife of Sergio Fernandez; she was the loving mother of Nathan Tisdale of Calif., Jacqueline Hamberg of Alaska, and Mariel Curtis of Boston; dear daughter of Warren Ripley and his wife Ann of N.C. and the late Josephine Ripley; devoted sister of Jerry Ripley of Texas and Barbara Ripley of Calif., and stepsister of Christina Hardy of Ohio and Walter Hardy of Calif.

Dorothy M. Appel, at 93
Dorothy “Dolly” May (Kaufman) Appel, a longtime Hull resident, died March 11 at the age of 93. 
An avid reader, Mrs. Appel spent many years on the Library Board of Trustees. She also served as a secretary for the Hull Public Schools, working in both the Jacob and Memorial schools.
She was the beloved wife of Bernard Appel and devoted mother of Roy Appel and his wife, Mala Strassfeld, and Nina Gardner and her partner, Steve Dolan; she was the former mother-in-law of Joe Gardner. 
She was the loving grandmother of Justin, Eric, and David Appel; Nicole Powers and her husband, Jamie; and Jeffrey Gardner; and she was great-grandmother of Matthew Powers.

Obituary: Martha Fisher

Martha Fisher, at 74
Martha (Everett) Fisher, a longtime Hull resident, died March 15 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 74.
Ms. Fisher grew up in Norwood and earned her associate’s degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She worked as a decorator at Filene’s department store in downtown Boston for many years before she bought and operated Pots & Petals florist in Hull. In her retirement, she volunteered for Wellspring and the Cohasset Historical Society. 
She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Hull Garden Club. She traveled extensively throughout her life.
Ms. Fisher leaves her daughter, Ruane Sardelli; her husband, Jeff; and their children, Luke and Finn. 
A celebration of Ms. Fisher’s life is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at First Church of Squantum, 164 Bellevue Rd., Quincy.

David F. Lewis Jr., at 61
Funeral services were held Monday at St. Ann’s Church for David F. Lewis Jr., who died March 6. He was 61.
Mr. Lewis graduated from Hull High School and was a U.S. Army veteran who worked as a long-haul truck driver for many years.
He was the beloved husband of Mary “Mimi” (Stasik); loving brother of Jodi Lewis; and beloved father of Jessica Brousseau, David F. Lewis III, Joshua Toczko, Jessica Williams, and Lindsey Williams. He is also survived by four grandchildren. He was the son of the late Patricia (Shack) and David F. Lewis.

Former Hull resident Kathleen A. (Johnson) Mitchell died March 9 in Vero Beach, Fla. She was 71.
She leaves her beloved husband of 52 years, Kenneth Mitchell; two sons, Kenneth Mitchell, III, of Falmouth, and Edward Mitchell, of Vero Beach; and two grandsons, Brendan Mitchell, of Providence, R.I., and Sean Mitchell, of Hull.

Obituary: Ann L. Lewis

Ann L. Lewis, at 90
Ann Lee (Dennison) Lewis – beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt – died Feb. 28, after a brief illness. She was the second of nine children born to Leon and Elizabeth Dennison of Newburyport. She settled in Hull in 1958, where she lived for 55 years before moving to Florida.
Mrs. Lewis was a very talented woman, who played guitar, banjo, and mandolin and gave guitar lessons for many years. Painting, drawing, photography, sewing, crocheting, jewelry making, and traveling were a few of her many hobbies. She adored cats, providing food and “cat condos” to many generations of feral cats. (Sorry, neighbors!)
She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Smith, and her husband, Eric, of Clearwater Fla.; son Gary Lewis and Kathy, his longtime companion, of Mendon; grandson Jason, of Mendon, and granddaughter Caitlin, of California. She also leaves a brother, Curt Dennison, of Missouri; sisters Susan Flagg, of Massachusetts, and Christine Travelstead, of Arizona; and the amazing Newburyport gang.   
We will all miss her dry humor, funny, irreverent jokes, and excellent cooking. (Mama, don’t forget that penny!)

Obituary: Robert M. Wacks

Robert M. Wacks, at 86
Robert M. Wacks of Hull, formerly of Braintree, died peacefully on March 6, at the age of 86. 
Mr. Wacks was a successful attorney who practiced law on the South Shore for more than 50 years. 
Devoted son of the late Joseph and Mildred (Brown) Wacks; he was the beloved husband of Nancy Dunn and the late Marcia (Berman) Wacks; loving father of Steven Wacks and his wife, Maryellen, of Los Angeles, CA, and Deborah Utter and her late husband, Craig, of Sharon. Mr. Wacks was the stepfather of Henry and Margie Dunn, Deborah and Paul McCarthy, Denise and Paul Heavern, Timothy Dunn, and the late Donna Dunn; and the  cherished grandfather of Jacob, Eliza, Lydia, and Sarah, and step-grandfather of 14. He was also the dear brother of Evelyn Meltzer and Sandra Carey.
A graveside service will be held at Olita Relief Association Cemetery, 776 Baker St., W. Roxbury, MA on Friday at noon.

Obituary: Vernon G. Ray

Vernon G. Ray, at 78
At his request there will be no services for Vernon Gene Ray, of Myrtle Point, Ore. He died Feb. 25, while in assisted living in Coos Bay. He was 78.
Mr. Ray was raised by his parents, Mona and Sanford Ray in Myrtle Point, where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and, after basic training, was stationed in Washington where he met and, in 1959, married Betty Colleen Overturf. 
Gene and Betty travelled extensively due to his military service. They were stationed in Washington state; the Azores in Portugal (twice); Wichita Falls, Texas; Denver, Colo.; and in Tampa, Fla., where, in 1977, he retired from the Air Force. On his retirement, the family moved to Myrtle Point, and Gene went to work for the Coos Forest Protective Association. He retired in 1992.
Mr. Ray was talented at any task he undertook. While in the military, he earned the highest honor, Distinguished Rifleman, during his time with the Air Force Rifle Team, and competed throughout the world. In his personal life, he enjoyed spending time with friends, playing cards, woodworking, making jewelry, and driving fast cars; he also was a serious rock hound. He loved fishing and hunting, and he had many stories from different parts of world where he had enjoyed these sports.
Mr. Ray was preceded in death by his wife Betty; his parents; and his brothers, Ronald Ray and Gerald Johnson. He is survived by his sister, Jeannette Jan Skelton. He also leaves his sons and their spouses, David and Susan Ray of Hull; Ricky and Donda Ray, of Coquille; and Jody and Dominique Ray, of Coquille; his grandchildren, Ashley, Nicole, Crystal, Trisha, Zachary, and Mariah and numerous nieces and nephews and very special friends.

Obituary: James K. Goodwin

James K. Goodwin, at 74
Captain James K. Goodwin, born in 1944 with salt water running through his veins, was a Hull native who resided on Allerton Hill his entire life. He died Feb. 22 at the age of 74.
After graduating with Hull High School’s class of 1963, Mr. Goodwin spent summers as a mechanic at Paragon Park. Most memorably, he performed the safety checks on the park’s famous roller coaster, which included walking and greasing the track from beginning to end. He also spent time as a train mechanic for Amtrak at Boston’s South Station.  
Although Mr. Goodwin could fix all things mechanical, he was first and foremost a man of the sea. He worked on several local fishing vessels before commanding his own lobster boat, the F/V Rachel G., which he named after his wife and life partner. 
In the late 1980s, Mr. Goodwin obtained his plumbing license, for a backup career to fishing, and worked for his oldest son at R-Chee Plumbing. Plumbing became his primary career for several years, before he returned to his true passion as a merchant marine sea captain, working on research vessels for his younger son at Goodwin Marine Services.
In addition to being a man of sea and a talented mechanic, Mr. Goodwin was an avid gardener, an animal lover, builder of boats, and lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox.  
Above all, he was a cherished, revered, and proud family man. He is survived by his wife, Rachel Goodwin; his children and their spouses, Jeffrey and Jennifer Millen, Debbie and James Shepherd, Amy Millen, captains Joshua Goodwin and Brooke Johnston, Jennifer and Ian McLarnon; his siblings and their spouses, Jane and James Ferrigno, George and Linda Goodwin, and Anne and Joseph Boucher; his grandchildren, Jonathan and Jake Millen, Kelsey and Paul Banter, Ashley, Zachery and Dylan Shepherd, Samantha, Ryan, Brooke and Maddie Connolly, Justin and Jamie Goodwin, and Kevin Marino; and great-grandson Brayden Shepherd.

Allan P. Jones, at 77
Allan P. Jones, 77, of Hanover, died peacefully on Feb. 21. 
He was born and raised in Braintree, son of the late Albert and Ethel Jones. Mr. Jones proudly served his country with the Marines during the Vietnam War. He also served his community as a police officer for the towns of Hull and Hanover.
The beloved husband of Elaine (Ameral) of 40 years, he was the loving father of Stanford Jones, and Jeffrey Jones and his wife, Milena, all of New York; Michael Gilpatrick and John Gilpatrick, both of Hanover; and dear brother of Carol Satkus, of Duxbury. He also is survived by five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Obituary: Judith E. Malone

Judith E. Malone, at 56
Judith E. Malone, age 56, died in Charlemont Feb. 19, after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and John Malone. 
Ms. Malone attended schools in Hull and Cohasset, attaining her GED. She was a much-loved and well-known member of the South Shore mental health community. 
She resided in Weymouth and attended Discovery Day program for several decades. She enjoyed the groups there, especially yoga and art. She loved rock and roll, the beach, and Dunkies. 
The family would like to express their gratitude to all who worked with her and helped her live her life to the fullest. A special thanks to all the residential workers who helped care for her over the decades.

Obituary: Herb A. Cook

Herb A. Cook, at 71
On Herb A. Cook, loving husband and father, died Saturday, Feb. 16 at age 71.
Mr. Cook was born in Bath, Maine, but lived most of his life in Hingham and Hull. He was a brilliant manual-machinist and contributed his tools and materials to hospitals and to NASA. He would say his biggest accomplishments were his son, Jeremy, and marrying Terry.
Mr. Cook had a passion for watches, fishing, biking, photography, and old cameras. When he wasn’t out in the woods or by the lake, he could be found tinkering at his workbench in the garage or basement. 
After serving time in the Vietnam War, he found everyday blessings in those around him, which instilled in him a love of porch-sitting, appreciation for the beauty of nature, and enjoyment in the company of family. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit.
Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, Terry; his son, Jeremy; his sisters, Leslie and Ginny; his brother, Jim; five stepchildren and 16 grandchildren; and a niece and nephew. His loved ones will always carry Herb’s memory in their hearts.
