Obituary: Albert T. Albanese

Albert T. Albanese, at 92
Albert T. Albanese died at Seasons Hospice Facility in Milton on Monday. He was 92. 
Mr. Albanese was born in Brockton and raised in Hull. He was a graduate of Hingham High School. He entered the Navy during World War II. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the American Area Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal. 
Mr. Albanese had worked as a commercial clam digger in Hull for more than 70 years. He also worked his entire career as a rigger at the Quincy Shipyard, retiring in 1985. He was an avid bowler and loved gardening. 
The beloved husband of the late Muriel V. [Taylor] Albanese and Dorothy Roderick; he was the devoted father of Timothy Albanese and his wife, Suzanne, of Braintree, Dorothy Albanese of Scituate, Thomas Albanese and his wife, Lisa, of Whitman, John Albanese and his wife, Gina, of Pembroke, Carole Walling of Rockland, Jack Kecskemety and Mariruth Castle, both of Hull, Stephen Kecskemety of New Hampshire, Joe Ford of Plymouth, Debi Madden of Brockton, Larry Ford of Taunton, Steven Ford of Florida, Russell Ford of Virginia, and the late Jimmy Albanese and Patricia McGrath. Mr. Albanese is also survived by many adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 
At his request, services will be private. Donations in his memory may be sent to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were handled by the Peck Funeral Home in Braintree.

Obituary: George B. Berg

George B. Berg, at 79
Funeral services were held Wednesday for retired Hull teacher George B. Berg, 79, of Weymouth, who died July 28 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
A graduate of Christopher Columbus High School in Boston, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Curry College in Milton, and his master’s in education from Bridgewater State University.
Mr. Berg was the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) teacher and advisor at Hull High School for many years. He also served on the DECA Executive Committee and as a treasurer for the organization. He taught accounting at the former New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in Kenmore Square.
During the early 1980s, Mr. Berg was the manager of the Alliance Drum and Bugle Corps of Greater Boston, an activity he enjoyed with his wife, who fed the corps while travelling the events circuit.
Affectionately known to his grandchildren as “Papa,”
Mr. Berg enjoyed attending their sporting events, working in his yard, and tending to his koi pond.
He was the husband of Jean M. [Camuso] Berg. The two had been married for 54 years
Mr. Berg also leaves three children: George A. Berg and his wife, Linda, of Weymouth, Anne Marie Berg of San Diego, and Christopher W. Berg and his wife, Kimberly, of Marion; a sister, Arlene Berg Hall of Medway; and his grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, Amanda, Meghan, and Gabriella. He was predeceased by his sisters, Lorraine Biagiotti and Rosemary Nash.

Obituary: Joseph P. White

Joseph P. White, at 81
Joseph Paul White, of La Quinta, California, died July 1. He was 81.
Born at home in Pottsville, Pennsylvania to Paul and Catherine [Newton] White, Mr. White grew into a standout athlete who played football for Pottsville High School. After graduation, he studied for a year at Massanutten Military Academy. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1958, where he had pledged St. Anthony’s Hall (Delta Phi) and was a member of the “V” Club and Eli Banana. He played three years of varsity football and was named an all-conference tackle.
Following college, he served as a lieutenant in the Army. Mr. White requested a posting overseas, but instead was assigned to the Nike missile air-defense base on Hog Island – now called Spinnaker Island – in Hull.
A chance encounter at a coffee shop led to a 55-year marriage to the love of his life, Maureen Bergan White. He was quickly adopted as a son by his in-laws, Dr. William M. “Doc” Bergan and his wife, Marion.
Mr. White is survived by his wife, Maureen, and his adoring daughters, Elizabeth Barron White and Catherine Ann White. He was predeceased by an older sister, Joan Marie White Dewald.
He worked for 46 years in the insurance and financial planning field for ManuLife, Lincoln Financial, and John Hancock. Stints in California, Richmond, Washington, D.C., and 27 years in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania created a lifetime of memories, friendships, and wonderful stories.
Mr. White loved his time at Massunutten and at University of Virginia and kept in contact with many of his St. Anthony brothers. He especially loved his years playing tennis. His family was often regaled with the heroic play that seemed to happen on Men’s Night, where it was “four at the net and the ball never hit the ground.”
Mr. White will be laid to rest in St. Paul’s Parish in Hingham.

Obituary: Edward F. Hanlon

Edward F. Hanlon, at 95
Edward Francis Hanlon, 95, of Hull, formerly of Boston and Randolph, died peacefully July 4. 
Mr. Hanlon graduated from Jamaica Plain Agricultural High School in 1940 and enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He survived the sinking of the USS Southern Seas in Okinawa on Oct. 9, 1945. 
Mr. Hanlon was a union carpenter. For most of his life, his hobby was organic gardening, which he pursued with passion. 
The beloved husband of the late Anne [McCarthy] Hanlon; he was the loving father of Joan Morey of Hull, Anne Keane and her husband, Roy, of Hanson, Mary Davis and her husband, Ray, of Cohasset, Edward Hanlon and his wife, Diane, of Hanson, Paula Hanlon of Hull, Mark Hanlon of Halifax, and Michael Hanlon and his wife, Marie, of Hull. Dear brother of James Hanlon of Scituate and the late William Hanlon, Kathleen Bystrom, Agnes Bradley, and Margaret Harrington; Mr. Hanlon also leaves 17 grandchildren and great-children; and several nieces and nephews. 
Visiting hours will be held Friday, from 4-7 p.m., in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 160 So. Main St. (across from St. Anthony Church), Cohasset. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Ann Church, 208 Samoset Ave., Hull. Interment will be private.

Jeffrey D. Gerstl, at 70

Jeffrey D. Gerstl, of Franklin, formerly of Framingham and Hull, died July 3. He was 70. 
Beloved husband of Sheila [Chonin] Gerstl; dear son of the late Sam Gerstl and Ruth [Stein] Gerstl; devoted father of Brian Gerstl and Robert Gerstl. Loving brother of Mark Gerstl, Cindy Gerstl and her wife, Julie Kern, and the late Paul Gerstl; dear grandfather of Cody Gerstl; he also was a wonderful uncle, cousin, and friend to all who loved him. 
Graveside services at Sharon Memorial Park, 43 Dedham St., Sharon, will be held Friday at 12:45 pm. Mourners should gather at the rear of the Administration Building.

Obituary: Irma H. Mooney

Irma H. Mooney, at 89
Irma H. [Hunt] Mooney (Hunt), age 89, of Weymouth, died – surrounded by her loving family – on June 15. She was born in Brockton, grew up in Hull, and attended Hingham schools. She was a graduate of the New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing. She met her husband, Richard, while attending college in Boston. They soon got married, started a family in Brookline, then settled in Weymouth in 1955, where they raised their family. 
Mrs. Mooney always stayed in touch with her roots, taking many family trips to Nantasket Beach in Hull where she grew up. She was fun, witty, compassionate, and will always be remembered for her love for her family, lifelong nursing career, playing bridge, and her passion for all sports. 
The beloved wife of the late Richard P. Mooney, she is the loving mother of Rick Mooney and his wife, Carol, of Weymouth, Donna Bradford of Florida, Jan DePari of Bridgewater, Jeffrey Mooney and his wife, Mary, of Marshfield, Pamela Needle and her husband, Bill, of Florida, and Thomas Mooney of Hanover. She was the devoted sister of Avis Studley and her husband, Tom, of Hingham; and also is survived by 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Holly Hall

Holly Hall, at 54
Holly [Marrone] Hampe Hall, 54, of Pembroke, former longtime resident of Hull, died June 14, after a courageous battle with cancer. 
Holly married the late Ariulf Eric Hampe in 1985; they settled in Hull and had eight children together. She treasured him and always held a special place for him in her heart and could never forget the bond they had. Family and friends would describe Holly to have a heart of gold; she would sacrifice anything for all of her children, family, and friends. 
Many would describe her as their “best friend.” She was a child at heart, and would do anything to put a smile on someone’s face. She was a happy, loving, and easygoing woman who cherished holidays, and tried so hard to giver her children a magical experience and special individual time with each one. 
Holly leaves her husband since 2007, Richard Hall of Pembroke. She was the beloved daughter of Ethel [Cochis] Marrone and the late Paul F. Marrone of Randolph; and mother of Kara Valerie Ouagague and her husband Abderrahmane of San Diego, Karen Hampe of Pembroke, Karl Hampe of Quincy, Kurt Hampe of Quincy, George Hampe of Hull, Anton Hampe of Quincy, Richard Hampe of Hanson, and Monica Hampe of Pembroke. She was the adored grandmother of Yusef, Farris, Safia, Sirene, Ashton, Malik, and Anthony; and leaves her brothers, Gregory Marrone of Pembroke, John Marrone of Foxboro, Nicholas Marrone of Taunton; and a sister, Andrea Farretta of Weymouth.

Obituary: Lawrence N. Papouleas

Lawrence N. Papouleas, at 71
Lawrence Nicholas Papouleas, 71, died April 23, at the Halifax Health Hospice in Edgewater, Florida.  
Son of the late Chris and Lillian Papouleas, Larry was born in Boston. Since his father owned a grocery and other businesses in Hull, including a company called Interstate Provision that locals knew as Chris’s, and his mother’s family lived in Florida, the family spent each year traveling between the two states.
So Mr. Papouleas attended both New Smyrna Beach High School and Hull High School, graduating from the latter in 1963. He graduated with a degree in business administration from Northeastern University in 1968. He worked as an accountant in Jacksonville and Tampa, Florida for several years. Eventually, he worked as office manager for a law firm in Titusville for about 25 years.
Mr. Papouleas loved stamp collecting and gardening, especially working with plants native to Florida. He had many friends and was like an uncle or grandfather to their children. He also sponsored children through child charities. 
Mr. Papouleas is survived by his sister Karen and her spouse, Elizabeth Wills; his aunts, Marie Simmons Goodrich and Ida Simmons Goodrich; and several cousins.

Obituary: Jeffrey Q. Ast

Jeffrey Q. Ast, at 25
Jeffrey Q. Ast, of Hull, died June 1.  He was 25.
He grew up in Hingham, where he attended Plymouth River, middle, and high school. Mr. Ast was also a student at Fryeburg Academy. He recently moved to Hull. 
Mr. Ast loved hockey; it was his passion in life. He played for Hingham Youth, NEH, NECDL, Hingham Harbormen and Fryeburg Academy. He was a huge Bruins fan and loved all sports. He enjoyed biking and being outdoors. 
Mr. Ast will be remembered for his big heart, sense of humor, and caregiving personality. He was an incredibly creative and thoughtful woodworker, and he loved his family and his dog Henry more than anything in the world. He will never be forgotten. 
He was the beloved son of Gary Ast and Joan Quenneville, of Hingham and Hull; loving brother of Julianne Strathman and her husband, Evan, of Lafayette, Calif.; dear grandson of Anne and Ray Quenneville of Suffield, Conn., and the late Richard and Pauline Ast; nephew of Gene and Steve LaBrie of Leicester, John Quenneville of Suffield, Conn., and the late Patsy Wilhoite Bocz; cousin of Evan and Rachel LaBrie of Leicester and Toni Bocz.

Carol A. Froio, at 81
Carol Ann [Lind] Froio of Hull, formerly of Cohasset, died June 5. She was 81.
Mrs. Froio graduated from Matignon High School and attended Vesper George School of Art and Cardinal Cushing College in Brookline. She worked at South Shore Surgical Associates in Scituate as a medical secretary until she retired. 
Mrs. Froio loved life and brought smiles and laughter to everyone she knew. She adored everything about the ocean and wanted to share it with others, especially her husband, Ralph. Mrs. Froio also loved animals, antiques, and she was especially interested in interior design. Walking, swimming, tennis, and golf were among her interests, but family was her number one priority. She was a member of Cohasset Golf Club since 1976 and also a member at Riddles Bay Golf Club in Bermuda. 
She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Ralph Froio; son Sal Cesario and his wife, Elena, of Hull; and daughters Debbie Tagliente and her husband, Peter, and Carolyn Farrell and her husband, Timothy, all of Hanson. She was the grandmother of five: Nicholas, Olivia, Timothy, Lucy, and Evanna. Mrs. Froio was predeceased by her first husband, Salvatore Cesario.

Obituary: Priscilla H. West

Priscilla H. West, at 73
Priscilla H. [Hamlin] West, of Hull, died June 3. She was 73.
As a young child, Mrs. West traveled the world while she grew up. She lived and went to school in places such as Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, London, and Costa Rica. She and her family eventually moved to the United States. She moved to Hull about 25 years ago. 
Mrs. West held a bachelor’s degree from Wheelock College and was a kindergarten teacher for Boston Public Schools for 30 years. She loved playing Sudoku and online jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed watching her DVR, especially the TV show, “Law and Order.” Her passions in life were teaching and her many pets. She was honest and unfiltered, but giving, loving, and very generous. She enjoyed sharing her many interesting stories from her travels. She will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. 
Dear wife of 36 years of the late Wayne West; loving sister of Mary Hamlin of Texas; cherished aunt of Rachel Bramson, her husband, Ben Giese, and their children, Noah and Abbey Rose Giese of Texas, and the late Ruth Bramson. She also is survived by her devoted niece and best friend, Toby Camillone of Berkley, and her children, Presley and Italia. Her beloved pug, Trixie, will keenly miss Mrs. West.

Hull resident Ruth H. [Jackle] Reed died peacefully on Wednesday, May 31, at the age of 71.
Mrs. Reed worked for The Boston Herald in the automotive advertising dept. for 30 years and absolutely loved her job. She was a wholesome woman with a heart of gold. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Beloved wife of 39 years of Robert Reed; loving sister of Karl Jackle of Stoughton and the late Adolf Jackle and Jean Levine; Mrs. Reed also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Noreen E. Cronin

Noreen E. Cronin, at 80
Noreen Elizabeth [Jennings] Cronin, of Hingham, died peacefully at Brigham and Women’s Hospital June 4. She was 80.
Mrs. Cronin was born in Boston, and was raised in Watertown and Hull. She married the love of her life, Arthur Cronin, Jr., in 1959. The couple settled in Hingham, where they raised their two sons.
Mrs. Cronin was a devoted and loving mother. She was very proud of her family and was excited to become “Grammie” to her two grandchildren. She loved holidays and family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family was important to her. She enjoyed many summers on the South Shore with her family, from the Cape to Hull’s Gunrock Beach. Known for her kindness and warm smile, Mrs. Cronin always remembered the smallest details of her friends’ and family’s lives.
Mrs. Cronin was educated at Hingham High School and the Chandler School for Women in Boston. A dedicated and hard worker, she was employed at Hitchcock Shoes in Hingham for more than 20 years. It was at Chandler School and Hitchcock Shoes where she met many of her oldest and dearest friends. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
The beloved wife of the late Arthur A. Cronin, Jr.; loving mother of Arthur Cronin, III and his wife, Judith, of Beverly, and Brian Cronin and his wife, Susan, of Scituate; cherished Grammie of Elizabeth Hannan and her husband, Justin, and Michael Cronin, all of Beverly; Mrs. Cronin was also very special to many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Theresa M. Laverty

Theresa M. Laverty, at 91
Theresa M. Laverty, 91, died, surrounded by her friends, at South Shore Hospital on Wednesday.
Miss Laverty was born in Cambridge and lived in Hull for the past 80 years. She was the daughter of Walter and Margaret [Carroll] Laverty, sister of Virginia Laverty, and cousin of Patricia Mulligan, all of Hull. They all predeceased her.
Miss Laverty was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Tyngsboro, and Hingham High School. She worked for Thomas Black Insurance Co. in Boston for 45 years. She was a very kind and generous person, especially when it came to animals.
Miss Laverty was a member of St Mary of the Assumption Church Sodality and was a daily communicant at St. Ann’s Church. She leaves her beloved friends, Patricia Coyne, and the Bergan-Sylvester family, all of Hull.

Obituary: Margaret Harkins

Margaret Harkins, at 83
Margaret M. [Grimes] Harkins died May 26, at age 83.  
Mrs. Harkins’ life centered on her loving family. Her eyes lit up whenever she was in the presence of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was giving by nature, and worked for the Visiting Nurse Association. Her personality attracted friends who thought the world of this sweet, kind, loving, and compassionate lady. 
Beloved wife of the late James Harkins; loving mother of William T. Wanberg of Hull and the late Paul G. Wanberg; Nana to Kristen and David Wanberg; great grandmother of Ava and Kathryn Wanberg.

Obituary: Sean P. Reilly


Hull resident Sean P. Reilly died May 25. He was 49.
A 1985 Hull High graduate, Mr. Reilly was a talented finish carpenter who took great pride in his work and helped many family members with home projects.
Mr. Reilly found comfort in the solitude of Nantasket Beach. He loved the music of the 1970s, mostly due to his older sisters’ influence. Working out at the gym and golfing were important to this genuine man, who had a big heart to complement his handsome face.
He will be remembered for his love, loyalty, and willingness to help others.
Mr. Reilly found his greatest joy in his son, Sean P. Reilly, Jr. The beloved son of Geraldine (Oliver) Abbott of Hull and Paul O. Reilly of ME; stepson of the late Bob Abbott of Hull and Joan (Conlin) Reilly of ME; Mr. Reilly was the cherished brother of Geri Reilly and her spouse, Louise Lovallo, of Hull, Cathie Jennings and her husband, George, of TX, Kim Curley and her husband, Terry, of Duxbury, and Jennifer Clark and her husband, Craig, of Stoughton. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews; and his son’s sister, Jessica Payne, whom Mr. Reilly loved as family.

Willard “Bill” W. Simmons of Boston, formerly of Hull, entered into rest May 21. He was 89. 
Mr. Simmons was the beloved husband of the late Jacqueline [Tulman]; devoted father of Ellen Sheridan and her husband, Bob, Joanne Simmons and her spouse, Kris Eckland, Erin Simmons, Lloyd Simmons, and the late Eric Simmons; cherished grandfather of Kerie, Damon, Corey, Kevin, Jaime-Lee, Leanne, David, Tyler, and the late Jessica; and great-grandfather of Elijah.

Obituary: William P. Richardson

William P. Richardson, at 84
Hanover resident William P. Richardson died, with his family by his side, May 22. He was 84.
Mr. Richardson was a Hull native and a proud U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Korean War. He owned a trucking company, Rich’s South Shore Express, Inc., for many years.
He loved country music, trucks, and plowing. He often could be found at Monument Square in Hull, or at the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, paying his respects to the memory of those who served the nation. 
Devoted husband of Shirley [Dwyer] Richardson for 47 years; he was the father of 13; grandfather of 21; and great grandfather of 12.

Obituary: Sean R. O’Brien

Sean R. O’Brien, at 43
Sean R. O’Brien died unexpectedly, at his home, May 21. He was 43. He grew up in both Hull and Rockland and had lived in Hull for many years. 
Mr. O’Brien served in the Mass Army National Guard. He was a corrections officer at the Norfolk County Jail and also was a member of the Teamsters Union. 
Beloved son of Janet Martin of Hanover and John F. O’Brien and his wife, Mary, of Hull; he was the loving father of Sean R. O’Brien Jr. and Kaitlin O’Brien, both of Weymouth. Mr. O’Brien also was the loving brother of Kerry O’Brien of Whitman, Richard O’Brien of Philadelphia, Kevin O’Brien of Ohio, James O’Brien of North Carolina, Maureen O’Brien of Hull, and Alyssa Colburn of East Bridgewater; and the beloved nephew of Alice Mousseau of Waltham, Michael Marcello of Florida, Robert Marcello of Winchester, and Nancy Marcello of Lexington.

Obituary: Frank A. Basler

Frank A. Basler, at 59
Francis A. Basler, aka FAB, of Old Orchard Beach, ME, formerly of Hull, died unexpectedly Jan. 12. He was 59. 
Mr. Basler loved the simple pleasures in life – his family, friends, good music, and laughter. He had the warmest smile and a contagious laugh. 
Mr. Basler was a gifted and talented man who loved to play his guitar and write songs. There was nothing he couldn’t fix. He loved his model cars and was proud to be called “the grill master.” He loved with his whole heart and touched many.
Those left behind to carry on include: Theresa McNamara, his true life partner; Marc McNamara, his son, best friend, and working partner; and Desiree, the mother of his two beautiful grandchildren, Noah and Kassidee. “Pa” adored Noah and Kassidee. They meant the world to him.
Mr. Basler also has two sons from a previous marriage, to Dianne Perkins-Basler: Joseph Basler and Daniel Basler, who grew into great men and made their father proud. Mr. Basler is also survived by his siblings: Joseph Basler and his wife, Theresa, of Hull, Euanna [Basler] Kelly, and Richard Basler of Brockton; nieces and nephews Christopher, Alyssa, and Kevin Basler, and Lindzie Boucher, all of Hull; and a boatload of aunts, uncles, and cousins very dear to him, including cousins Cathie McInnis, Pattie Fleming, and Richard Saia.
Family and friends are welcome to celebrate FAB’s life on Sunday, June 4, at the Hull Village Cemetery. The service will begin at 1 p.m. and a cookout – “FAB style” – will follow at Joe and Theresa Basler’s home at 65 J St. Please come with your favorite FAB stories and a light heart. He would want tears to be few and drowned out by laughter from all the happy memories he gave to all.
