Obituary: Daniel Francis Neville, Jr.

Daniel Francis Neville, Jr., 89

Daniel Francis “Mickey” Neville, 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022 in Clearwater, Fla.

Born in Boston, raised in Milton and summered in Marshfield Massachusetts, Mr. Neville served his country during the Korean War in the Army Security Agency. During the day, Mr. Neville designed submarines and military ships for Bethlehem Steel, J.J. Henry & Co, and General Dynamics. He spent evenings attending Northeastern University and attained a bachelor’s degree in engineering and business management. For decades, Mr. Neville worked as a Systems Analyst managing database design and technology operations for General Dynamics in Quincy, Honeywell Information Systems in Waltham, and GTE in Chantilly, VA.

With his adored wife of 64 years, Carmelia (Pungitore), he raised five children in Hull, where he served his community on the Hull Conservation Commission, establishing a town park in the Weir River Woods estuary. He was commodore of the Nantasket Beach Salt Water Club and a commissioner of the South Shore Mosquito Control Board. In 1976, when friends Polly Logan and Mary Jeanette Murray encouraged him to run for Massachusetts State Representative, he was defeated by a very slim margin, remarkable at the time. Throughout his life, he continued to serve many veterans organizations, such as the Veterans of Foreign War chapter in Hull, where he was Commander and Quartermaster, and The American Legion, where he served as Commander. While in Virginia, Mr. Neville was active in the Snickersville Turnpike Association, Knights of Columbus, and his church.

For more than 40 years, he was a diehard New England Patriots fan and season-ticket holder, and became a recent Buccaneers fan. An avid yachtsman, Mr. Neville’s passions were the ocean and sailing with his family on his trimaran, Manta, throughout Nova Scotia, the rocky coast of New England, Cape Cod, and the islands. Mr. Neville enjoyed U.S. and world history, international travel, reading, politics, solving mysteries, and art. While living in Virginia, he enjoyed watching fox hunts and the annual steeplechase, visiting historic locations, battlegrounds (such as Gettysburg), and museums (Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Chantilly was his favorite), and watching Revolutionary and Civil War reenactments.

Mr. Neville is survived by his wife and soul mate, Carmelia; cherished children Michele Shannon, of Clearwater, Fla, Camille Neville and Frank Moccaldi of Duxbury, Suzanne and Marshall Reynard of Clarksburg, Janine Neville-Golden and Edward Golden of Scituate, and Daniel III and Linda Neville of Hull; adored grandchildren Catherine and Grace Neville, and Willow Golden; loving sister Celeste (Sis) Neville Maloney of Phoenix, Ariz., and many beloved nieces and nephews throughout the U.S.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Clearwater on Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m., and a Mass and interment will be held in Massachusetts in early October. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Neville’s memory may be made to SuncoastHospice.org, StBrendanCatholic.org, or the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
