Obituary: William Parker Miller

William Parker Miller, 89
Former harbormaster William Parker Miller has died at the age of 89.
He was born on Dec. 21, 1929, in Boston to Lloyd Parker Miller and Ruth Olsen Miller and was raised in Hull with his three sisters Helen (Loraine), Lilian, and Ann, who all predeceased him.
Space was limited in the family home during the Great Depression, and, because Loraine was an older half-sister, she moved in with an uncle and aunt, leaving the rest of the family to dwell in the crowded add-on rooms at the family business, an auto repair shop at the corner of U Street and Nantasket Avenue. In the early 1940s, the family moved to K Street, although they rented out that house each summer and moved back into the shop.
The family business morphed into a boat business (Miller’s Marina), and William ran that business with his father and took over after his dad retired. He also worked as an electrician and mechanic at General Dynamics in Quincy and at various marinas along the South Shore. He was an electrician for Amtrak and retired in the 1990s.
William, who served as harbormaster for Hull after his father’s tenure, had attended school in Hull until he was of high school age; at that time, Hull students went to Hingham High because Hull did not yet have a high school.
At age 17, he joined the Naval Reserve through his high school. He remained in the Navy, achieving a CPO E7 Status, varying between reservist and active full-time until 1984 when he was piped off into naval retirement on the U.S.S. Constitution. He served actively in Europe during the Berlin Wall crisis of 1961-1962.
William married Katherine A. Miller in 1960. They had one son, Robert P. Miller, and he adopted Katherine’s daughter, Lori Ann. The family resided in Hull from 1960 until a move to Marshfield in 1973. That year the family joined the Marshfield First Congregational Church. His previous church was the Hull Methodist in Hull Village.
Ever an avid dancer, William took to country music. He also had a love for photography and was a photographer for the Massachusetts Country Music Awards Association in the 1990s and beyond.
A lifelong Mason since 1953, William was a member of many Masonic orders and chapters on the South Shore, including the Konohasset Lodge, the Daniel Webster Lodge, and the Weymouth Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed attending dinners and meetings into the fall of this year. His photographic skills went to great use within his many Masonic groups.
His wife of 38 years, Katherine Miller died in 1998. William leaves behind his son, Robert P. Miller and his wife, Sally Smart Miller; their daughter, Katherine Anne Miller; and his daughter, Lori Ann Morse; all reside in Connecticut. He is also survived by his godson and nephew, David P Willis, and nephews Richard C. Willis Jr., Gary J. Willis, John Simons, Bruce Simons, and William Simons and their spouses.
Visiting hours will be on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9-11 a.m., at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean St., Marshfield, followed by a funeral service at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Services will conclude with burial and military honors in the Couch Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made to the First Congregational Church of Marshfield Building Fund, P.O. Box 826, Marshfield, MA 02050, and by visiting the website https://www.fccmarshfield.org/.

Obituary: Trish Turner

Trish Turner
Boston-born artist Trish Turner lost her battle with cancer on Oct. 16. From a young age in Canton to her final days in Hull, she delighted in and interpreted the visual world onto thousands of colorful canvases.
Trish graduated magna cum laude from Framingham State College in 1974, with a double major in fine art studio and art history. Since then, she kept her art alive with many continuing education classes. In the late 1970s, she interned at the Richmond Art Center and the San Francisco Museum of Art in California. While there, she created promotional posters for nightclubs and so-called New Wave bands.
On returning to Boston, she began working in amateur video production, shooting live music and other nightclub events. This work led her to more formal training in video production. An internship at Boston Post Productions in 1990 involved a decade of scenic painting, styling, propping, and set-dressing.
Styling credits include, among others, Jordan Marsh, Neiman Marcus, Elizabeth Grady, and Ports International. More recently, her talents have adorned the windows of Wellspring Multi-Service Center in Hull where she worked for 16 years.
As a scenic painter, Trish freelanced for several production and theater companies, including the American Repertory Theatre, Emerson Theatre, the Wang, and the Huntington Theatre. As assistant in charge for the Mystic Scenic Studio, she designed and painted sets for the Boston Ballet, Big Apple Circus, Disney World, Disney Cruise Lines, Children’s Hospital, Museum of Fine Arts, and others. In addition, she styled corporate sets for several companies, including Lotus, Digital, EMC, Coors, Talbots, Honda, and Sheraton Hotels.
For the past 20 years, Trish lived in Hull, where she focused on her own work. During that time, she exhibited at the Hull Lifesaving Museum, Hull Artists Gallery, Simply Smiths in Cohasset, and the South Street Gallery in Hingham. Trish also participated in many open studio tours in Hull.
Trish enjoyed painting and teaching with her “En Plein Air” students and continued her own studies of pastel and acrylic painting at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset. Her work is on display in numerous private collections in Hull and beyond.
Trish was predeceased by her parents, Virginia and Patrick Turner, of Canton, and her sister, Judy Page of Jamestown, N.C.  She is survived by her sisters: Deb Annese and her husband, Joe, of Scituate; and Ginny Turner, of Centerville.

Born on July 1, 1931, Mary was the daughter of Joseph and Matilda (MacDonald) MacPhee of Clear Spring, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She grew up on her family farm where they grew their own vegetables and raised livestock. After her Mom died when Mary was young, she and her three siblings, led by sister Flo, managed the household while Dad tended to the farm. Mary came to the United States in 1949 at the age of 18 and lived in Brookline near many of her MacPhee family relatives. She became a proud American citizen in 1957.
Mary married her husband, Victor, in 1957 and started their family in Dorchester. They moved to Hull in 1961 where they raised their five children. Mary was a devout Catholic and a member of the St. Mary’s Parish of Hull for 58 years.

She loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. She lived for the holidays when she could get the whole family together for one of her famous meals. She was known for her meatballs, and they were a “can’t miss” feature of most Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Her competitive spirt shined at home when she could convince children and grandchildren to join her in her favorite table games: Scrabble, cards, and puzzles were her specialty. She generously entertained family and friends while they spent time at the beach and returned to her home for summer cookouts.
Mary was the beloved wife of Victor, her late husband, for 48 years. He was the loving brother of Marilyn Morin and her late husband, Fred, of Newport Richey, Fla.; Sharon Harvey and her late husband, Frank, of Martinez, Ga.; Nancy Knight and her husband, George, of Wolfeboro, N.H.; Charles Johnson and his wife, Lee, of Billerica; and the late Lawrence Johnson and his surviving wife, Joyce, of Windsor Locks, Conn., and the late Andrea, Sandra, and Alan Johnson. He is also survived by 22 of his favorite grandchildren and by many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Donald Alexander McNeil

Donald Alexander McNeil, 83
Donald Alexander (“Sandy”) McNeil, born May 4, 1936, died on Aug. 29.
Sandy was well-known in Hull, where he spent most of his youth. He attended Hull schools and worked for several businesses in town, such as removing nails from old boards and straightening them for Aldon Bryanton for 25 cents a coffee can full.
Sandy delivered the Patriot Ledger, set pins manually at the bowling alley, caddied at the Cohasset Golf Club, worked at camps, restaurants and Paragon Park, Joe Silva’s garage, and A St. market, to name a few. He was awarded a medal of honor for saving a drowning downed pilot in the Hull bay.
After high school, he attended Boston University and then married his wife, Carolyn, with whom he raised three children: Adora, Deborah, and Daniel. Daniel predeceased him.
Sandy lived a life of purpose. He served his country in the Air Force for four years and the Navy for seven years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, boating, cars, motorcycles, and creating art.
He retired to Florida, where he met his “girl” Shirley, with whom he spent the past 15 years.
He is survived by his daughters, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his brother, Roderick, of Texas.
There will be a private military service in Florida. At Sandy’s request, in lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the Shriners, St Jude’s Hospital for Children, or Disabled American Veterans.
