/Anthony Marchione, at 88
Anthony “Tony” Marchione of Hull passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025, surrounded by his children.
Mr. Marchione was born in Gioiosa Ionica, Reggio Calabria, Italy, on December 18, 1936, to Quintino and Giuditta Marchione, and was one of six siblings. He married his wife, Carmela on October 5, 1959, and they were lovingly married for 65 years until her passing on October 23, 2024. Together they had three children: Quintino, Frank, and Julianna. On March 8, 1970, Mr. Marchione and his family moved to the United States and settled in Hull, where he remained until his death.
Mr. Marchione was best known in his community as “Tony the Barber.” He began his trade in 1954 in his hometown on the coast of Southern Italy. He opened his own barbershop at the age of 21. Upon his arrival in the U.S., Mr. Marchione began working at what would become Station 29 Barbershop on Station Street in Hingham. He was in the same location, at the same chair, for 50 years. Cutting hair was his life’s passion, where he was able to make lifelong friends, and he enjoyed going to work every day because of these relationships. In 2020, Mr. Marchione unfortunately retired due to the COVID19 pandemic. He still spoke with his customers and friends from the shop often.
Mr. Marchione was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. There was nothing he would not do for his family. He loved to bake and cook. His bread, cookies, and crostatas were unmatched. His family’s favorites were his chicken cutlets, rice croquettes, and zucchini parmesan. He was an avid gardener. He loved to make espresso for his guests. He enjoyed grocery shopping and going to different stores to find the best deals. He also enjoyed watching the Italian channel every day.
Mr. Marchione is survived by his children, Quintino Marchione and wife, Diane, of Hingham; Frank Marchione and wife, Regina, of Hull; and Julianna “Julie” Gratta and her husband, Anthony, of Hingham; grandchildren Cristina Barletto and her husband, Jim; Monica Kennedy and her husband, Pat; Alessandra Winter and her husband, Tim; Daniela Marchione; Isabella Hughes and her husband, Josh; Maria Marchione; Frankie Marchione; and Gabriela Marchione; and great-grandchildren Ava, James, Patrick, Grace, and Mila. He also is survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Tuesday, April 15, from 4-8 p.m. in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church on Wednesday, April 16 at 10 a.m. Burial at Saint Paul’s Cemetery in Hingham to follow.
The family would like to thank everyone at Norwell VNA and South Shore Hospital who were part of Mr. Marchione’s wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to NVNA and South Shore Health Foundation in his memory.
