Obituary: William Weeks

William R. Weeks, at 82

William R. “Bill” Weeks, 82, a longtime resident of Hull, passed away suddenly on January 17, 2024 at his new home in Marshfield. The love of his life, his wife Sandy, was by his side.

Mr. Weeks was born in 1941 and raised in Quincy. After high school, he served in the Navy on sub rescue ship. He started his professional career as a truck driver, and then under the tutelage of a close family friend, he became a structural draftsman for several large Boston-based engineering firms. He returned to his love of driving, securing a CDL school bus license and driving students to school, track meets, and sporting events all over southeastern Massachusetts. The students were special to him, and the cards he received from them were a source of pride and honor.

He loved sailing his boat through the Boston Harbor islands. All vacations were spent skiing in Colorado and Utah. Only until recently did he turn to warm weather, vacationing with his wife, daughter, and her husband. For the past 17 years, he and his wife loved riding their Harley Davidson throughout southern New Hampshire and along all the back roads of the South Shore. He took meticulous care of his bike and was proud that it looked like the day he bought it. His other passions included golf, board games, and playing pool with his friends.

Mr. Weeks was truly loved by his wife, Sandra Weeks, for their 48 years together, and by his loving daughter, Cheryl Weeks, and her husband, Terry Fogg of Rindge, N.H.

A celebration of life will held in the spring with longtime friends.

Obituary: Kelly Garofola

Kelly Garofola, at 57

Beneath tender skies, the gentle soul of Kelly (Culbert) Garofola took its silent leave from this Earth on January 20, 2024. Born on March 11, 1966, Mrs. Garofola entered this world with a quiet thoughtfulness that would become a hallmark of her 57 years. 

Mrs. Garofola was a kind, loving, and compassionate individual. She had a natural talent for working with children and dedicated many years as an elementary paraprofessional in the Hull Public Schools, bringing smiles, laughter, and love to the children she worked with every day.

In her free time, Mrs. Garofola enjoyed taking walks and finding quiet moments along the bay. She cherished spending time and sharing laughter with her children and husband. She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved animal companion, Molly, with whom she shared many warm snuggles.

Mrs. Garofola is survived by her loving husband, Rob Garofola, and their children, Lilly and Evan Garofola of Hull. She was the sister of Gerald Culbert of Revere, Mary-Lou Markowitz and her late husband, Alan, of Hull, Kathy McLaughlin and her husband, Kevin, of Marshfield, Nancy Corcoran and her husband, Rusty, of Hanover, and Pat Paula and her husband, James, of Hull. She also is survived by her brother-in-law, Kevin Conway of Hull, sister-in-law Kathy Garofola Lo and her husband, Danny, of Pembroke, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. 

As Kelly is called to join her mother Marion (Van Dine) Culbert, father Lloyd Culbert, and sisters Leona Conway and Betty-Ann Culbert in the heavenly abode, they remain grateful for the precious moments shared.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather in solemn remembrance and joyful celebration of Mrs. Garofola’s life on Thursday, February 1 at 8:30-10:00 a.m. in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham. Obituary: Charles Caissie

Charles Caissie, at 85

Charles “Chickie” Caissie of Estero, Florida, died on January 11, 2024 at the age of 85.

A longtime Hull resident, Mr. Caissie loved the beach and all the beauty of the town. He was predeceased by his wife, Judith, and son Charles Caissie, Jr., and leaves behind a daughter, Suzanne Godinho, six grandchildren: Amanda, Sarah, T.J., Brandie, Kristen, and Jayden, and 10 great-grandchildren: Sabrina, Elena, Ayuah, Charlie, Gracelyn, Scout, Archer, Georgie, Henry, and Lilou.

Mr. Caissie will be buried in a private ceremony at a later date.

Obituary: Lisa Barnes

Lisa Marie Barnes, at 50

Lisa Marie Barnes passed away at home in the early hours of January 19, 2024. She was 50 years old.

Ms. Barnes was among the most kind, compassionate, and empathetic of people. Constantly helping those around her, Ms. Barnes would give out her last dollar so that someone wouldn’t be hungry, give up her own bed to those who would otherwise be homeless, and always allowed others to confide in her.

Ms. Barnes was first and foremost the proud mother of three children. Sean, Ryan, and Molly were her entire world and her main motivation. She constantly spoke of how proud she was of her kids, and the young, successful adults they were turning into; she more recently welcomed her first and only grandchild, Flora. Since her birth in June of 2022, you couldn’t have a conversation with Ms. Barnes without her mentioning “her baby.” Flora will forever be reminded of her “Mimi” and how much she cherished her.

As a child, Ms. Barnes was the youngest of 14. On her wedding day, she was given her mother’s wedding ring to wear for her ceremony. Chaos struck when she realized the ring was no longer on her finger. After hours of searching, it was only when the cake was served that they found the ring resting on top, in the frosting – an ode to the humorous and scattered personality she was well known for. Lisa was the bravest woman her children ever knew. She hurdled many challenges, overcame anything that came her way, and always found positive lessons in life’s teachings.

Ms. Barnes is survived by her three children: Sean, Ryan, and Molly, her granddaughter Flora, 13 brothers and sisters, and countless nieces and nephews. Following Ms. Barnes’s cremation, her children will host a celebration of life in her memory at a later date.

Obituary: Amy V. Schneider

Amy V. Schneider, at 95

Amy Vanderwood Schneider was a gifted artist who saw beauty in the world as few ever could. Her colorful seascapes, landscapes, and portraits reflected the joy she found in the places and people who touched her life.

A short walk from Nantasket Beach, home was a modest two-story house filled with children, dogs, stacks of books, paintings in progress, and always, something delicious simmering on the stove. Mrs. Schneider was always in motion. In that crowded house packed with laughter and conversation, she hosted art lessons, Girl Scout meetings, and parties for the kids.

Mrs. Schneider was an outspoken advocate for the children of Hull. She was a town leader during the Blizzard of ‘78 as the first woman chairperson of the Hull School Committee. She later worked for Boston University School of Law and Metropolitan College.

Mrs. Schneider loved an adventure. She enjoyed day trips to Rockport, riding the swan boats in Boston, and packing up her easel and paints and heading off to capture the colors of western Florida and the south of France. She was a passionate Patriots fan (Tom Brady era), relished a heated political debate, and never watched a cooking show she didn’t like. She loved growing vegetables, raising dogs, and eating lobsters.

Mrs. Schneider always made time for her children and grandchildren. She listened to our problems, healed our hearts, and taught us how to find joy in the simple things.

Amy Vanderwood Schneider left us on January 15, 2024 at the age of 95. She was the beloved wife of the late Samuel Schneider and cherished daughter of the late Catherine (Moffie) and Benjamin Vanderwood. Sister of the late Millard and Jack Vanderwood. Devoted mother of Barry Schneider and his wife, Elayne, Carol Kramer and her husband, William, Janet Liss and her husband, Stuart, Jonathan Schneider and his partner, Meghan Allen, and Eric Schneider and his partner, Heather Hall. Adored grandmother of Adam, Jamie, David, Emily, Andrew, Steven, Rachel, Jack, and Maxwell. Great-grandmother of seven. Mrs. Schneider also is survived by her devoted dog, Pete.

Obituary: Linda A. Hill

Linda A. Hill, at 82

Linda A. (Dwyer) Hill of Hull bravely and peacefully went home on January 9, 2024 at the age of 82. Mrs. Hill was born in Lowell on July 27, 1941 to Philip J and Norma L Dwyer.
She is survived by her loving, devoted husband, Ronald P. Hill, Sr., whom she met through a mutual love of country music.

Mrs. Hill was one of four siblings, including the late Philip Dwyer, Jr., Wayne Dwyer of Weymouth, and Jeanne Warford of Hull.
She was the wonderfully witted and cherished Mum of six children: Lisa Hoban and her husband, Brian, of Plymouth, David Foley and his wife, Maria, of Pembroke, Laura Foley of Rockland, Robin Cohen and her husband, Dan, of Holliston, Cheri Foley of Hull, and Bill Murphy and his wife, Lori, of Hull. Mrs. Hill also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and stepchildren. In addition, she opened her home to many, many foster children. She was also known as Nana to all the children she cared for over the years at Sunset Point Family Daycare. She later became a nanny to two very special boys, Ivan and Leland, and finished off her lifelong career as a teacher at Hanover Preschool for “Mrs. Max” at the age of 80.

Her children will forever miss hearing, “Be careful,” and “Good night, sweet dreams, and God bless you.”

Obituary: Mary Ann ‘Mimi’ Belyea

Mary Ann ‘Mimi’ Belyea, at 86

Mary Ann “Mimi” Belyea of Plymouth, formerly a longtime resident of Hull, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2024. She was 86.

She was born in Weymouth to Margaret (O’Hare) and Wallace Richardson and raised in Hull. She graduated from Hingham High School in 1955. Mrs. Belyea was a hard worker who often held multiple jobs concurrently. She worked many years as a bookkeeper for the Town of Hull and she also managed several auto repair businesses she co-owned with her husband, Walter. 

Family was most important to Mrs. Belyea. She enjoyed spending family time during the many pool parties she hosted. She was very generous and loved spoiling her stepchildren, nieces, and nephews, especially during the holidays. She also believed in giving back to those less fortunate and supported many charitable organizations.

Mrs. Belyea loved to travel and had very happy memories of the many years she spent with her husband and friends in St. Martin. She also enjoyed trips to casinos, doing puzzles at home, and spending time with her beloved dogs.

Beloved wife of 47 years of Walter Belyea of Plymouth. Devoted stepmother of Alan Belyea and his wife, Kastin, of Germany, and David Belyea of Falmouth. Cherished grandmother of Sarah, Nastasha, Levi, and Jack. Loving sister-in-law of Madeline Richardson of Hull, Barbara Morris and her husband, Rick, of Quincy, and Charlie Belyea and his wife, Lisa, of Pembroke. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents and siblings Wally Richardson, Terry Richardson, and Gail Coggins.

Obituary: Joseph F. Menice, Jr.

Joseph F. Menice, Jr., at 96

Joseph F. Menice, Jr. of Hull, went to meet his wife, Doris, on January 6, 2024, in his home surrounded by his family. He was 96.

The beloved husband of the late Doris (Kinnear) Menice, he was the cherished father of Paul Menice and his wife, Jean, of Monmouth, ME, Vickie Desharnais and her husband, Ronald, of Hooksett, N.H., Peter Menice and his wife, Danielle Cossett, of Corrales, N.M., Jeff Menice of Hull, Theresa Ryan and her husband, Stephen, of Norwood, Jay Menice and his wife, Susie, of Lynn, Mary Wilson and her husband, Allen, of Weymouth, Tammy Parker and her partner, Deanna Page, of Dexter, ME, Cathy Farrell and her husband, Leo, of South Weymouth, and Lynne Menice of Hull. Mr. Menice also is survived by 22 grandchildren, whom he adored.

Mr. Menice graduated from Hingham High School, where he excelled in academics, basketball, and baseball. He entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 3rd Army Military Government unit at the Nuremberg Trials as a prisoner guard and trial guard at the end of World War II. 

Upon being honorably discharged from the military with the rank of staff sergeant, he attended and graduated from Boston University. On June 19, 1954, he married his longtime sweetheart, Doris, and settled in Hull, where they raised 10 children. Mr. Menice started teaching literature, science, math, physical education, and penmanship at the Memorial Middle School. In 1957, Mr. Menice began teaching math and physical education at the high school. For the next 37 years, he influenced the generations of Hull students and fellow teachers through his teaching, coaching, and mentoring. He retired from teaching in 1994.

Throughout his retirement, Mr. Menice continued his dedication by supporting the various sports and recreational programs of Hull as the director of parks and recreation. He enjoyed collecting model trains and spending countless hours designing small towns and train routes in his basement. In September 1990, the Town of Hull dedicated the “Joe Menice Ball Field” in appreciation of his dedication to the youth sports of Hull. In 2009, Mr. Menice was inducted into both the Hingham High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the Hull High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a devoted member of St. Mary’s parish and served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Mr. Menice will be remembered as a devoted husband, a cherished father, a proud grandfather, and a true gentleman and mentor who not only loved his family, but his beloved Town of Hull.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Monday, January 15, from 4-8 p.m. in St. Ann’s Church, 208 Samoset Ave. A funeral Mass will be celebrated there on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Cremation will follow.

Obituary: Frederick Pike

Frederick Pike, at 68
Frederick John Pike passed peacefully on January 1, 2024 in his home. He was 68 years old.
Mr. Pike was a retired U.S. Navy SEAL and was the husband of late Barbara Pike. He was the beloved father of Melanie Pike, Melinda Pike, and Rachael Pike, and the brother of Patrick, Martin, John, and Kathleen Pike.
He was loved and adored grandfather of Caleb, Griffin, Avery, Dylan, Kyle, Wyatt, Ayden, and Adrianna. Burial will take place in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 10:45 a.m. on January 19. Friends and family members are welcome to attend to say goodbye. Mr. Pike will be missed and never forgotten.

Obituary: Heidi A. Richardson

Heidi A. Richardson

Heidi A. Richardson of Hingham and Calistoga (Napa Valley), California, passed away unexpectedly on December 23, 2023.

Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Elinor Richardson.

Ms. Richardson is survived by her beloved partner, Brett Woodyatt, of Hingham. She leaves four siblings, Bruce Richardson and his wife, Ellen Slaby, of Chestnut Hill, Nancy Birmingham and her husband, Tom, of Moss Beach, Calif., Brian Richardson and his wife, Theresa, of Braintree, and Faith Richardson of Danville, Calif. She also leaves four cherished nephews, Ryan Birmingham, Kevin Birmingham, Brett Richardson, and Craig Richardson.

Ms. Richardson spent her entire 36-year professional career in the financial services industry. She started her career as the assistant treasurer of Blackstone Bank while still an undergraduate at Bentley University. Most recently, she was a managing director at Morgan Stanley’s Graystone Consulting. She also had managing director roles at JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock, and at other well-known banking leaders.

Ms. Richardson was renowned for her generosity and sense of adventure. She loved running marathons in exotic destinations around the world and had traveled to more than 80 countries across all seven continents.

Visiting hours were held on Dec. 29 in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home in Hingham, and her funeral Mass was on Saturday at St. Ann’s Church. Interment was private.

Obituary: Lilian Joan Merrill

Lilian Joan Merrill, at 91

Lilian Joan Merrill, a longtime resident of Hull, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, December 28, 2023. She was 91.

She was born in Liverpool, England, to Elizabeth (Fitzsimons) and Joseph Glenfeadon Gwilliam. After graduating high school in Liverpool, Mrs. Merrill began working for the Dunlop Rubber Company, where she worked in quality control and was voted “Ms. Dunlop.” She met her husband, Lorenzo Dennis Merrill, when he was serving in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in the U.K. The two were married and started a family in the U.K. and then moved to Dorchester, where she would make many lifelong friends. 

When Mrs. Merrill moved to the United States, she began her career as a mental health worker with Boston State Hospital, where she would retire after 30 years. In 1976, she moved to Hull with family, where she would remain for the rest of her life. She adored living by the beach and took advantage of living so close to the ocean.

In her spare time, being a fashionista, Mrs. Merrill enjoyed her shopping. At home, she enjoyed knitting, playing Scrabble, and was quite the movie buff.

Mrs. Merrill had a quiet resilience and strength that was admired by those who knew her. She was a cancer survivor and her family’s backbone. She was always everyone’s stronghold. Mrs. Merrill was a beautiful person with a friendly disposition and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Also survived by her beloved niece, Joan Gwilliam Alcock, many nieces and nephews, and her constant companion, Bella. Obituary: Robert McGilvray, Jr.

Robert McGilvray, Jr., at 68

Robert “Bob” McGilvray, Jr. of Hull passed away at the age of 68 on Christmas Day 2023 after a long illness.

He was the beloved husband of Marie-Pierre (Renard) McGilvray for 37 years, devoted father of Charlie Driggs of Hingham, Jim Driggs of Jamaica Plain, and Caroline (McGilvray) Fetigan of North Yarmouth, Maine; best father-in-law of Julie, Jen, and Jason; and best son-in-law of Andree (Gummy) and Jean (Bonpapa) Renard. Adoring grandfather of Carter, Anna, Adelyn, Robin, and Meredith.

Mr. McGilvray also leaves behind his dear siblings, Bette McGilvray of Marco Island, Fla.; Kathy McGilvray Baltz of North Conway, N.H.; Jay McGilvray of Kingston; Margie Galleher of Bethesda, Md.; Patty McCarty of Plymouth; Richard McGilvray of Lackawanna, N.Y.; and their spouses, as well as his many nieces and nephews.

He was born in Boston, the oldest son of the late Robert McGilvray, Sr. and Marjorie (Allison) McGilvray. His family moved from Mattapan to Scituate when he was 12 years old and he discovered his love of the ocean. As a young man, he lived on Cape Cod and in North Conway, where he became an expert skier and ski instructor. North Conway also was where he discovered more adventure in hiking the White Mountains in all seasons. He attended McGill University in Montreal and obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science, then returned to Hingham, where he started his family.

Mr. McGilvray’s career began in the marine industry in the 1980s, and eventually he became the general manager of the U.S. office and distribution center of a European industrial fabrics manufacturer, Serge Ferrari USA in the Fort Lauderdale area. He greatly enjoyed his professional life, which involved a great number of varied industries, far and wide travel opportunities, and his favorite – remaining heavily connected to the marine and boating world. He was a member of the Marine Fabricators Association and Industrial Fabrics Association, among others.

He was an adventurer in the truest sense of the word and had many hobbies. He loved skiing, hiking, swimming, scuba diving, traveling, kayaking, fly fishing, camping, reading science or nautical fiction, dancing at parties, and most importantly, sailing his boat “Amasele” all around the Bahamas, South Florida, and the New England coast. He was a member of the Hull Yacht Club, Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club, and enjoyed PHRF Wednesday night racing, as well as many coastal regattas throughout the years.

He will be remembered for his curious mind, zest for life, sense of humor, and warm smile.
A private family memorial at Hull Village Cemetery is planned for January 13, and a Celebration of Life at the Hull Yacht Club for family and friends will follow in the spring.

Obituary: John Francis Gorham

John Francis Gorham, at 97

John Francis Gorham, 97, of Weymouth and formerly of Hull, passed away on December 15, 2023, in the company of his family. 

Known as Jack, Mr. Gorham was born in Braintree on January 17, 1926, to the late Elmer and Helen (Payson), and was one of nine children. After serving honorably as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army, Mr. Gorham and his wife, Barbara, started their life together in Quincy, eventually relocating to Hull, where they raised their nine children. Mr. Gorham was a loving and devoted family man. He retired as a member of the AFSCME Local 1395 after working as a custodian in the Hull Public Schools for 20 years, and worked multiple second jobs to provide for his family.

Mr. Gorham was predeceased by his beloved wife of 73 years, Barbara (Beatey), his son, Scott, and seven siblings. He is survived by children Deborah Moore and her husband, Allen; John and his wife, Paula; Douglas and his partner, Deirdre Kahler; Michael and his wife, Meg; Geoffrey; Alan and his wife, Debbie; Kim Donnellan and her husband, Frank; and Amy Langan; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and his sister, Claire Cleggett and her husband, Billy.

A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 24, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. Burial will take place on Thursday, January 25 at 10:15 a.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Obituary: John Kent Bryant

John Kent Bryant, at 93

John Kent Bryant, 93, of Cohasset, passed away peacefully in his home on November 30, leaving his children, Susan and Gardner, his creative caregiving team, and members of Wolfe and Greaves families.

Mr. Bryant was an enthusiastic fan of Hull Lifesaving Museum’s races, events, and book club; the WSU bluegrass band at Daddy’s Beach Club; anyone’s Laser, Opti, 110, or catboat sailing; Oceanum Vela’s race-sail repurposing; the “Goon Squad” projects; and activities at Craig Wolfe’s small boat paradise.

Always up for a drive, stroll, or roll along Nantasket Beach and the Gut, in his final years, he had adventures in the DCR beach wheelers, on commuter boats, all-arounds with Ricky Wolfe, and even steered a HLM rowing boat up and over Bumpkin Shoal.

Philip J. Petrocelli, at 88

Philip J. Petrocelli of Hull died on December 20, 2023 with his family by his side. He was 88. The beloved husband of the late Eleanor M. (Shea) Heavern Petrocelli, father of Philip V. Petrocelli and his significant other, Suzanne Branson of Dallas, Paul A. Petrocelli of Scituate, Michael A. Petrocelli and his wife, Tami, of Hull, Mark J. Petrocelli and his wife, Tammy, of Scituate, Jack Heavern of Hingham, Denise Musket and her husband, Ken of Lincoln, R.I., Elaine Hurley her husband, Brian, of Hull, Paul Heavern and his wife, Denise, of Hull, and Susan Richardson and her husband, Mike, of Hingham. Brother of the late Barbara Wallace and Nicholas Petrocelli. Devoted Papa to Christina, Danielle, Michael, Rebecca, Nicholas, Mia, Alyssa, Paul, Ryan, Matthew, Erica, Nicole, Julia, Brendan, Connor, and Shea. Great-grandpapa to Jack. Mr. Petrocelli is survived by his companion, Audrey McNiven, and his many nieces and nephews. 

Mr. Petrocelli was born in Boston, raised in Dorchester, and graduated from Saint Gregory’s High School and Boston State College. He initially taught school, transitioned to become a successful South Shore contractor, and later in his career, founded Petrocelli Public Insurance Adjusters, which he felt was his true calling.

Mr. Petrocelli was ambitious, a self-starter, and industrious. He taught his children the values of hard work, independence, and a belief in oneself. He enjoyed living close to the ocean, playing golf with his wife, Eleanor, and friends in N.C., and he would toil away for hours in his shop. He loved being with people, enjoyed a party, a good laugh, and the Red Sox. Most of all, he loved his time with family, which included his four sons, his extended family with Eleanor M Heavern, his brother Nick, sister Barbara, and all his nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. He will be dearly missed.

Visiting hours were held on Dec. 27 in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, 40 Sea St., North Weymouth, and a funeral Mass will be celebrated on Dec. 28 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church. Cremation will follow.

Jeffrey Lucas

Jeffrey J. Lucas of Taunton passed away on December 20, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Lucas was born and raised in Hull, which generated his love for the ocean. He lived his life to help others and felt joy in making others happy. Mr. Lucas was an avid Boston Bruins fan, enjoyed trips to Foxwoods, and had a special place in his heart for animals, especially cats. Mr. Lucas’s main passion in life was his family and spending time with those he loved, particularly his three girls. He will be remembered for his strong will and passionate personality, and will be sadly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Beloved husband of Dawn (O’Leary) Lucas of Taunton. Loving father of Suzanne Deibel and her husband, Jarrod, of Whitman and Nicole Barrows and her husband, George, of Abington. Cherished grandfather of Jason Deibel of Whitman. Adored son of the late Francis and Constance Lucas, caring brother of Robert Lucas and his wife, Kathy, of Abington and Peter Lucas and his wife, Cathy, of Kansas. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday, Dec. 29, from 3-6 p.m. at Chapman Funeral Home, Prophett Chapel, Bridgewater. A funeral service will be celebrated on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Chapman Funeral Home.

Obituary: Dennis Keith Gibbons

Dennis Keith Gibbons, at 64

Dennis Keith Gibbons, 64, passed away suddenly on December 21, 2023 at his home in Hull. 

Mr. Gibbons was born at Dixon Army Base Hospital in New Jersey and grew up in Hull – a “Village Kid” who graduated from Hull High School in 1978. After high school, Mr. Gibbons enlisted and proudly served in the USAF as a staff sergeant, working on B-52 bombers and earning multiple achievements. During that time, he married the love of his life and had two children.

After his military career, Mr. Gibbons returned home to Hull to raise his family and worked for many years for HIM Mechanical Service in Bridgewater. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and could often be found listening to country by the BBQ grill, where he was right 99% of the time. Mr. Gibbons was an avid fisherman who thoroughly enjoyed being out on the water, catching striped bass and tuna. He truly enjoyed his Saturday night poker games as well. He often could be found walking around Strawberry Hill with his beloved dog Lucy (Poo-pie) and pampering her with homemade meals. Nothing brought greater joy to him than knowing his children and grandchildren are all home in Hull. Mr. Gibbons, in his own mind, was a Grinch, but nothing made him happier than to see his grandkids on Christmas morning opening their gifts.

Mr. Gibbons was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Edward Gibbons, and brothers Harold and Michael Gibbons, and sister Dawn Campbell. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Deborah Gibbons; son David and his wife, Tina; daughter Christine Quan; and grandchildren Aiden Gibbons and Nathan and Avery Quan, all of Hull; brothers Robert Gibbons of Wareham and Jeffery Gibbons of Hull, and sister Laurie Lapham White of Weymouth. He also is survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews who loved him dearly.

A celebration of life will be held at a time to be determined. The interment will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hull Boosters, PO Box 305, Hull, MA 02045, an organization about which Mr. Gibbons and his family felt strongly.

Obituary: Armida Rose Sestito

Armida Rose Sestito, at 82

Armida Rose “Mimi” (Magrini) Sestito, of Hull, died suddenly at her home on Thursday, December 14, 2023. She was 82.

Mrs. Sestito was born in Springfield, Mass., on Dec. 2, 1941, and was the daughter of the late Lodovico and Helen (Parzych) Magrini. She was raised in Enfield, Conn., and attended local schools. Mrs. Sestito attended Boston University, American University in Washington, D.C., then later earned her master’s degree from Cambridge College.

Hull was her home away from home. She summered in Hull and Italy as a child; little did she know then that Hull and Italy would hold the heart to her future.

Mrs. Sestito taught in Hull for 30 years in both the Damon School and the Jacobs School. She impacted so many, whether it was teaching English to Italians who had moved to Hull from Palermiti, her famous Thanksgiving play, or planting tulips over on Peddocks Island.

Mrs. Sestito had a zest for life! Some of her fondest memories were on the water, Nantasket Beach, and Italy. Her passions were her family, teaching, traveling, boating, and her beloved life in Italy.

Mrs. Sestito was the former wife of the late Bruno Sestito, who died in 2020. She was the devoted mother of Domenico L. Sestito and his wife, Deborah, and Lodovico B. Sestito and his wife, Lisa, all of Hull. She was the loving grandmother of William Nolan, Rocco Sestito, Marco Sestito, Camden Ciulla-Marcinkewich and her husband, John, Hudson Ciulla-Sestito, Boden Ciulla-Sestito, and Harrison Ciulla-Sestito, all of Hull. She was the loving great-grandmother of Delilah Ciulla-Marcinkewich.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Thursday, Dec. 21, 4-8 p.m. in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 22, prior to the funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church at 10 a.m.

Mrs. Sestito will be interred with her family in Sirolo, Marche, Italy at a later date.

Obituary: Jason R. Belmarsh

Jason R. Belmarsh, at 46

Jason R. Belmarsh, a longtime resident of Hull, passed away suddenly on Monday, December 11, 2023. He was 46.

He was born in Albany, N.Y. to Susan M. and Robert S. Belmarsh. The family moved to Hull when he was a toddler, and Mr. Belmarsh grew up in Hull and spent most of his life here. He graduated from Hull High School in 1995 where he played hockey. Shortly after high school, Mr. Belmarsh began working as a mason. He mostly worked for himself in the industry for more than 26 years and took great pride in his work. 

In his spare time, Mr. Belmarsh loved spending time with his son, Blaise, and his many nieces and nephews. He had a great group of friends, but family always came first. His greatest joy came from time spent with family. He enjoyed football, whether it was playing it in the backyard with Blaise or watching on TV. 

Mr. Belmarsh was hard-working and had a good heart. He was always there to help others and the first to reach his hand out if somebody needed it. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Loving brother of Jared Belmarsh and his wife, Anna, of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Steve Belmarsh and his wife, Amy, of Plymouth, Mark Belmarsh of Hull, and Brian Belmarsh and his wife, Caitlin, of Hanover. Also survived by Susan Hanna of Hull and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as Blaise’s uncle, Rob Scully. 

Visiting hours were held on Dec. 20, and his funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m. in Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham. Burial in Hull Village Cemetery.

Obituary: Robert G. Rozzi

Robert G. Rozzi, at 88

Robert G. Rozzi Sr. of Hull died December 4, 2023 at the age of 88.

Mr. Rozzi was born on June 2, 1935 in Harlem, N.Y., the second youngest of seven children to Theodore and Jeanne, immigrants from Italy and France. The family soon moved to Mt. Vernon, a suburb of New York City. He attended and graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, in the Class of 1953. He moved to Hull when he was 17, following his oldest brother, who was stationed here in the Coast Guard. He remained in Hull, where he soon met his wife. Mr. Rozzi was a devout family man and Catholic, and was very involved in St. Mary’s parish. He was a stalwart supporter of St. Ann’s Church, where he sang and played violin in the choir for more than 65 years. He was a man of many hobbies, including hunting, fishing, trapping, taxidermy, and gardening, all of which he often enjoyed with his brother-in-law and dear friend, the late Fred Frazier.

In his younger years, Mr. Rozzi was often found at the local roller rink performing in stunt shows on roller skates. Music was a constant in his life, having played the violin from the age of 12. He supported his family as an auto mechanic and eventually manager at Penske Corp., from which he retired, and was well respected for his knowledge and skills by all who knew and relied upon him. Ever a sports lover and die-hard fan of the New York Yankees, Giants, and Rangers, he almost never missed a game and exercised his own love of the sport by coaching Hull Little League for many years. His pride and joy were his extensive gardens, the fruits of which he was only too eager to share with any and all. Mr. Rozzi had a great sense of humor and was king of the one-liners, never at a loss to see the humor in any situation or offer a unique perspective. A calm, steady presence, he was a genuine, decent man who always wanted to help other people. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Joan (Mascioli) Rozzi of Hull; daughter Judy Robbins of Hull; son Robert G. Rozzi, Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Hull; and daughter Peg Cavallo of Lakeville and her partner, Mike Pascarelli of Stoughton. He was the cherished brother of Theodore Rozzi and his late wife, Helen, of Brewster, N.Y.; Yvonne Calvert and her partner, Peter, of Greene, N.Y.; his late brothers Albert and his wife, Helen, of Nevada; James and Lavonne of Nevada; Michael and his wife, Madeleine, of Connecticut; and Anthony Rozzi and his wife, Grace, of New York. Beloved Papa of Stefani, Sandra, Robert III, Michaela, Alissa, Amanda, Marshall, and Theo, and Great-Papa of Josefene, Christopher, Henry, Kamdyn, and Kinsey. Loving uncle of Jean Vaughan and Joan Rozzi and her husband, Roger Jablonski, of Nevada, as well as many other nieces and nephews. Also survived by the St. Ann’s Church choir and all of his dear friends at the church and in the community.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday prior to the funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial in Hull Village Cemetery.
