Obituary: Mary Anne Odell

Mary Anne Chariton Odell of Hull, age 77, died on Sept. 9.
Ms. Odell was born April 16, 1941, in Oneida, N.Y. She graduated from the State University of New York at Albany and the University of Delaware. She believed strongly in the value of education, working most of her life in that field.
After teaching English for many years, in 1988 she moved from Newark, Del., to Scituate, where she became the first director of the Literacy Program of Greater Plymouth at Plymouth Public Library until her retirement in 2004. She re-entered the workforce to work part-time, most recently as the office manager at the Hingham Congregational Church. She retired in 2015.
She was an active member of the community of Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham, serving on many committees and participating in services as a liturgist.
Survivors include two children, Mark Odell and his wife, Karen, of Groton, and Carolyn Odell and John Camera, of Raynham; a sister, Jane Barclay of Scituate; her brother-in-law, James Barclay; a brother, Ted Chariton of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Meagan Odell; and two nephews, a niece, and several great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1:30 p.m. in the Glastonbury Abbey, 16 Hull St., Hingham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham or the Literacy Program of Greater Plymouth at Plymouth Public Library.
