Obituary: Charlotte Ruth Katz

Charlotte Ruth Katz

Charlotte Ruth Katz passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2022. Mrs. Katz was predeceased by her parents, Eli and Sadie (Skup) Blank, and siblings Francis (Edward) Friedman, Jason Blank, and Leatrice (Morris) Chafetz.

She is survived by her loving children Andrea (Dennis Hollingshead) Cohen, Jonathan (Amy) Katz, and Dayle (Jon) Lipsky; grandchildren Bradford (Erin) Cohen, Jennifer (Ryan) Clark, Stefani (Johnny) Perry, Samantha Katz, Zoe Katz, Alanna Lipsky, and Chase Lipsky; great grandchildren Camden Cohen, Clara Clark, and Benjamin Perry; sister-in-law Myra Blank; nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, neighbors, and dear friends.

Mrs. Katz was born in Boston, raised in Dorchester and Nantasket, and became a long-term resident of Quincy. Her parents felt strongly that all of their children should value education and this is something Mrs. Katz took to heart for herself and her children. She attended Girls Latin School in Boston and graduated with high honors with a triple major (English, Education and Music) from Tufts University. Her professional career included fashion modeling, teaching elementary school, and serving as a probation officer in the Quincy District Court. Judaism and community service were also fundamental to Mrs. Katz, as she was a long-standing member of Hadassah and Temple Beth El in Quincy.

Above all, Mrs. Katz was an extraordinary mother, Nana, super-Nana, aunt, sister, and friend. She was fiercely independent, devoted to her family, an avid reader, and knew her way around the kitchen. Although she was both proud and private, she never hesitated to share her thoughts with family and friends. She also had a strong sense of civic responsibility and never missed the opportunity to cast her vote. What gave Mrs. Katz her greatest satisfaction in life was family. Getting to serve as the matriarch to multiple generations gave her enormous satisfaction and strength. There was simply no one stronger, more determined or more caring. Charlotte’s legacy will endure through her family, and she will long be remembered.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill in Canton, and were followed by a brief graveside ceremony at Moses Mendelsohn Memorial Park in Randolph.

Shiva will be held at the home of Dayle and Jon Lipsky, on Thursday, Nov. 10 from 1-4 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. Shiva on Friday, Nov. 11 will be at the home of Andrea Cohen and Dennis Hollingshead from 1-4 p.m.

Obituary: Michael Rodney Weddle

Michael Rodney Weddle, 72

Michael R. Weddle, phenom of Nantasket Beach, passed away on Oct. 17, 2022, following a lengthy period of declining health.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H. on Oct. 29, 1949, the son of Rodney and Jewell (Otis) Weddle, Mr. Weddle considered himself a child of the “American Dream.” Moving to Hampton, N.H. in the ’50s, Mr. Weddle had an idyllic childhood, summering at family camps in the White Mountains, playing sandlot baseball, and ice skating at the neighborhood pond. He was the perfect cub/boy scout, a noble school patrol leader, and a rising Little League star.

If it weren’t for Mr. Weddle later becoming a ’60s flower child and an A+ student of counterculture, he truly believed he would have played professional baseball. Instead, this free spirit traveled the country and got himself into lots of good trouble. Drafted into the Army the same week as Woodstock, Mr. Weddle always said he “lived his life as revenge for being deprived the opportunity” to attend.

During the ’70s, after being honorably discharged from the Army as a conscientious objector and having taken a vow of poverty at a local monastery, Mr. Weddle relocated to Cambridge. It was here where he continued to advocate for the peace movement, working closely with Vietnam Vets Against the War and the Legal In-Service Project. Later, he went on to manage rock-n-roll bands and was a regular at the Rathskeller in Boston.

In the ’80s he returned to Portsmouth, where he had a brief stint as a janitor at the Navy Shipyard, drove a cab, and worked as a sports correspondent for the local paper. He played softball for a team sponsored by a local nursing home and began hosting charity events in their honor. It was during this time that Mr. Weddle taught himself guitar and became a self-described “back-bench folk singer.” A five-year stretch in New Hampshire politics as a state Representative rounded out the decade.

In 1990, following a lost bid to Congress where he’d run on drug legalization, Mr. Weddle returned to Cambridge with his rollerblades to coast upward on the career ladder. He became a Harvard Square musician while on the side starting a freelance transcription business and even dabbling in online stock trading. It was also during this time that he threw “the greatest parties planet Earth ever saw,” and his Thursday night spaghetti suppers that lasted three days will certainly live in infamy.

The turn of the century found Mr. Weddle in Hull, painting houses, playing music, and splurging on fried clams. He finally started his own all-original rock-n-roll band, Climate Change, and organized countless charitable concerts for local causes – fire victims, veterans, opiate awareness, animal shelters, and the local high school music department. Mr. Weddle always lived in the spirit of living for others.

Mr. Weddle was predeceased by his parents and sisters. He is survived by a daughter, two grandchildren, two nieces, a nephew, and a cousin, along with more friends than anyone can even begin to imagine. In Mr. Weddle’s own words, “There will come a time when I no longer cast a shadow upon Earth, when my smile becomes unseen and when the goodness in my heart has quivered. . . My hope is to fade into a memory that’ll sometimes awaken among those who’ve known me and also among those I’ve touched but never known.”

There will be a memorial benefit in his honor at the C-Note in Hull on April 8, 2023.

May Michael’s memory be a blessing. Peace to you all.

Obituary: Joseph V. Elisii

Joseph V. Elisii, 90

Joseph Vincent Elisii passed away on Sept. 28, 2022, after a brief battle with an aggressive form of bladder cancer. He was 90 years old.

A lifelong Hull resident, he was born in 1932 at the corner of H Street and Nantasket Avenue and then moved in 1965 to reside in the home he built, raised his family in, and lived the last 57 years at the top of Strawberry Hill.

Mr. Elisii was self-employed and worked every day alongside and under the direction of his Dad, landscaping and doing odd jobs around the town during his teenage years. Mr. Elisii graduated from Hingham High School in 1949 and went on to study business administration at Boston University, graduating with a BS degree in 1953. He was drafted into the U.S. Army the following year and served as an office clerk stationed in Fort Lee, Virginia, during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1962.

From there, the legendary Elisii Contracting Company began. Mr. Elisii and his father worked tirelessly around town on various general contracting jobs, digging ditches, laying foundations, building homes, paving driveways and plowing snow every winter. He gained a strong work ethic from his parents, Giuseppe and Aida, emigrants from Abruzzi, Italy, like nothing seen today. Mr. Elisii had the attitude of determination and dedication to succeed by owning his own business and building a beautiful home for his family.

He married Maryann DiLoreto in 1963 and welcomed two daughters, Marietta and Marguerite shortly after. Mr. Elisii continued to work hard and support his family for many years until retiring in his early 70s to care for his ailing parents. He then dedicated the rest of his life to assisting the elderly by delivering medical equipment, offering rides to medical appointments while serving the Hull Lions Club with many of its fundraising efforts.

Mr. Elisii received The Hull Hero award in 2014 for his service and dedication to the Town of Hull and its residents. In 2018, he was recognized for collecting more than $100,000 in revenues donated to the Hull Lions Club by manually collecting refundable cans. He received a bench in Hull Village bearing his name, and a Hull High School scholarship was established in his honor. Also, June 14, 2018 was designated “Joseph Elisii Day” in Hull.

Mr. Elisii was acclaimed as one of the “Boston Game Changers,” not by winning at things, but by winning at life and making life better for all that knew him. He loved joining his group of friends at Weinberg’s Bakery every morning for coffee to discuss the world events and solve the world’s problems. He was a frequent contributor to The Hull Times and wrote many letters to the editor to discuss the goings-on of Hull businesses and politics. He spent the rest of his life working on his home and took extraordinary pride in the immaculate landscaping surrounding it.

Mr. Elisii was predeceased by his sister, Marie Jarvis of Hull, and is survived by his daughters, Marietta Troup of Middletown, MD, and Marguerite Elisii-Johnson of Hull, and his four grandchildren, Corbin Troup of PA, Ayla Troup of MD, Alex Troup of MD, and Joseph Elisii-Johnson of Hull, and his great-grandson, Kellan Troup of PA.  Mr. Elisii also remained close to and adored his three nephews, Mark Jarvis of Quincy, Bobby Jarvis of Hull, and Billy Jarvis of Marshfield. He was simply a man who can never be compared to any other.

A wake and funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home,  21 Emerald St., Hingham. A Celebration of Life will follow at The Parrot, 1 Hull Shore Drive.
