Robert Alexander Mamis, 83, of Weymouth and formerly of Hull, died Sunday, June 25.
Born and raised in Newton, Mr. Mamis graduated from Wesleyan College and enjoyed a successful career as a journalist, writing for Boston, Newsweek, and Sail magazines. He was a senior writer at Inc. magazine for many years.
Mr. Mamis was a talented photojournalist, having shot covers for Boston magazine and taken the photographs and written accompanying text for feature stories in many tennis and golf magazines. He authored “When to Sell: Inside Strategies for Stock-Market Profits” in 1977, along with his brother, Justin Mamis. The book is still sold on Amazon.
Mr. Mamis also was an accomplished violinist and played fiddle for a band called “The Mother Bay State Entertainers,” which produced an album and frequently played at Club 47 in Cambridge during the 1960s and 1970s.
For many years, he lived in Hull on the former 1879 Boston Yacht Club property at 63 Highland Ave. He was an avid sailor and kept his 34-foot sailboat, Fido, moored 100 yards from his home. He and his wife, Clare, spent many summers sailing the coast of Maine, his favorite sailing grounds. He also traveled broadly in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Mr. Mamis was an avid Hullonian who loved living on the ocean. He served a term on the Hull Light Board in the 1990s.
He leaves his wife, Clare Demarest; his daughter, Tanya Mamis, of Brookline; his son, Timothy Mamis, of Newton; his stepchildren, Aidan Demarest, of Los Angeles; Leslie Maysak, of Washington, D.C.; and Patti Demarest, of Bristol, R.I.; and 12 grandchildren.
A private family gathering will celebrate his life. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of your choice.
