Obituary: Joseph P. Shaheen

Joseph P. Shaheen, at 85
Joseph “Babe” Shaheen of Quincy died peacefully, with family by his side, at Carney Hospital on Thursday July 28. He was 85.
Born in Quincy Point to the late Michael and Alice [George] Shaheen, where he was raised and educated, he served his country in Air Force during the Korean War.
A longtime resident of both Hull and Quincy and an employee of Eastern Airlines, Mr. Shaheen was blessed to spend most of his life by the ocean. He traveled often to Miami with his family and lived there at various points in his life. He was an avid athlete and enjoyed playing sports. Mr. Shaheen favored golf and playing cards, spending a lot of time at the South Shore Country Club. His true love of all the games was gambling.
Mr. Shaheen was quite a character, with nicknames that were bestowed on him such as Babe, Slippery, and Black Cloud, to name a few. He offered camaraderie to all who knew him. In his retirement years he was thrilled to land back in the city he loved most, Quincy.
Babe also really enjoyed working for many painting contractors in Hull throughout his later years He didn’t know if they hired him to paint behind the bushes, get coffee or lunch, or just to make them laugh, which he had done for so many. In most recent years he decided he really enjoyed going to the casino and playing cards with all his family and friends, especially those at Town Brook House in Quincy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was the loving brother of Donna Bertrand, Nora Chase, Michael and Robert “Mouse” Shaheen, all of Quincy, and the late Louise Nessralla, George, William “Satch,” John and Philip Shaheen. The father of Joseph and wife Lynne Gilbody, Neal and wife Robin Gilbody of Raynham, Jeffrey and wife Merideth Shaheen of Hull, and the late Joseph Shaheen Jr.; he is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend graveside services with military honors to be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Mount Wollaston Cemetery in Quincy. Enter the cemetery via the Sea Street entrance, across from the Quincy police station.
