Obituary: Doris Matthews
Doris L. [Manning] Matthews of Braintree, formerly of Hull, died March 26, at the age of 61.
Mrs. Matthews was the payroll supervisor at E.M. Duggan in Canton for many years. She was the first American to receive a double lung transplant about 30 years ago and was the longest surviving person to receive that procedure. Throughout the years, she was very supportive of other transplant patients. Mrs. Matthews was also a kidney transplant recipient and was eternally grateful to her brother in law Charlie for donating his kidney to her.
She enjoyed traveling with family and crafts. She will be remembered as a happy, generous, hardworking, and optimistic person.
Beloved wife of Donald P. Matthews; loving sister of Barbara Morris and husband, Charlie, of Hanover, Ruth Poirier and her late husband, Joe, of Franklin, Shirley Nolan and husband, Paul, of Braintree, and Edward Manning of Hollywood, FL; loving sister in law of Susan Garofalo and her late husband, George, of Plainville and James Matthews and wife, Janet, of Weymouth. Mrs. Matthews also is lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday, 4-8 p.m., in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, 809 Main St., South Weymouth. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow, at Gethsemane Cemetery, West Roxbury.
