Obituary: Charles Bernard Gold

Charles Bernard Gold, 74
Charles Bernard Gold, of Marco Island, Fla., formerly of Hull, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on May 8. He was 74.
Born in Boston on Feb. 25, 1947, he was the son of the late Samuel and Eleanor (Casey) Gold. Charles was raised in Hull and attended local schools. He graduated high school with the class of 1965.
His career was with Blue Cross Blue Shield as a data center manager. He enjoyed his work and the relationships he built throughout the years.
Charlie had many passions, his family being number one. Always present, never missing his son’s hockey games or daughter’s activities, he was the perfect Dad. A close second was his love for the New England Patriots. Watching all the Patriots’ Super Bowls with his family by his side brought him great joy.
He enjoyed many sports and was a good athlete. Whether it was softball, tennis, pickle ball, racquetball, he enjoyed them all.
He also enjoyed history and traveled with his wife to Civil War sites throughout the country. One of his favorite trips was traveling to Europe aboard the HMS Queen Mary.
Charlie made friends everywhere he went. Whether it was his childhood friends, friends from work, or friends made from his children’s activities, his big heart and great sense of humor made him an easy person to love.
Music was always important to Charlie. He spent several summers working at Meadowbrook in Gilford, N.H., an outdoor concert venue where he worked with his daughter and made many friends. One of his fondest memories was working as the private driver for musician Carlos Santana.
Charlie was dealt many health challenges over the years, but he soldiered on and refused to let them get the best of him. His strength and courage were as big as his heart.
Charles was the beloved husband of Maureen E. (Cooper) Gold. The two married on Oct. 9, 1965, in Boston, and together they shared 56 loving years of marriage. He was the devoted father of Emma M. Womack and her spouse, Sam, of New Hampshire, and Darrin C. Gold and his partner, Alice Liao, of Boston. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Sandra Munn and Linda Foley. Obituary: Douglas Crowley

Douglas Crowley, 28
Douglas Crowley, of Weymouth, died unexpectedly on March 4. He was 28.
Doug was sensitive, kind, brilliant, gregarious, and hilariously funny. He attended Hingham Public Schools and was deemed a National Merit Scholar based on his Scholastic Aptitude Test.
He was a prolific writer from an early age; he wrote his first short story when he was 10. When he was 12, he knew enough Spanish to help some folks on the MBTA with directions. He later became nearly fluent and used his Spanish language skills in a number of jobs, including his position at Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare, where he was adept at explaining the labyrinthian intricacies of health insurance coverage to his customers.
Doug also worked his way up as a server in fine dining, getting his start with the Eatwell Inc. restaurants – Tosca, Cafe Tosca, and Stars Restaurant in Hingham. He moved to Manhattan at age 21 and worked at several Michelin-rated restaurants.
Doug was equally comfortable in conversations with his colleagues at the front and back of the house, as well as the occasional celebrities and political bigwigs whom he waited on. On his days off, he took artful photographs of the people and architecture around the city.
Most importantly, Doug was empathic. He was a fierce supporter of the underdog or anyone who seemed to be suffering. Just before he died, Doug was planning to return to college and, eventually, law school.
Anyone who ever engaged in friendly arguments with him would have endorsed this plan.
Doug was the beloved brother of Cynthia Crowley, of Burlington, Vt. He was the cherished son of Karyn Donahue, of Somerville, formerly of Hull; and Richard Crowley, of North Weymouth. He was the beloved grandson of Ameila Crowley, of North Weymouth, and Alice Donahue, of Quincy. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A funeral and celebration of Doug's life was held on March 11.
Doug struggled recently with the disease of opioid addiction. If you knew Doug, or you or someone you know has struggled with the awful scourge of opioid addiction, please consider making a donation, in Doug's memory, to www.learn2cope.org, a nonprofit support network that offers education, resources, peer support, and hope for parents and family members coping with a loved one addicted to opiates or other drugs.

Obituary: Paul Morris Goldman

Paul Morris Goldman, 90
Paul Morris Goldman, of Hull and formerly of Newton, died peacefully surrounded by family on March 28. He was 90.
Paul was born in Boston on Jan. 2, 1931, to the late Harry and Mitzi (Field) Goldman. He graduated from Syracuse University and went on to earn a master’s degree in international relations from Boston University.
Paul enjoyed a long career in the leather industry, traveling all over the world and relying on his talent in languages and his knowledge, integrity, and warmth to establish decades-long business partnerships. He founded his own company, PHB International, in 1963, and he worked there well past his 90th birthday. To his great pride, his son, Barry, joined the business in 1986 and became his lifelong business partner.
Paul and his wife, Joanne, were married on June 20, 1954. Together they established their beautiful family in Newton and Hull, where they lived for the past 66 years. Paul’s happiest days were spent reveling in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on Nantasket Beach. He spent years pulling lobster traps over the side of his beloved SeaCraft 23, “Slap Shot.”
There was a seat at his table for everyone, and he loved nothing more than endless lobster, bagels, and Chinese food feasts with this family. He counted down the days until his favorite holiday of all, Thanksgiving. He was often found in a sunny spot on his porch doing The New York Times crossword puzzle, binoculars at hand to keep an eye on the striped bass.
He was an avid Boston sports fan, particularly of the Red Sox, though he maintained that Terry Francona was a “bum.” Between enjoying his favorite classic movies and telling jokes that made your belly ache from laughter, he serenaded family and friends at the piano.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne R. (Kushner) Goldman, of Hull. He was the devoted father of Julie R. Reedy, of Newton; Bonnie A. Clancy and her husband, Steven, of Hull; Barry R. Goldman, of Hull; Charles A. Goldman and his wife, Melissa, of Hingham; and the late Dr. Harold B. Goldman and his surviving wife, Mary Canning, of Orange. He was the devoted grandfather of Joshua Goldman, Caneen Canning, Samuel Goldman, Nicole Reedy, Benjamin Reedy, Christopher Reedy, Jason Clancy, Julia Clancy, Emily Clancy, Liam Clancy, Julia Goldman, Matthew Goldman, Lily Goldman, Maxwell Goldman, Jacob Goldman, and Paul Goldman. He was the loving great-grandfather of Tony, Hattie, Jordan, Ruby, Daisy, Daphne, and Pete. He was the dear brother of David Goldman and his wife, Judi, of Dedham; and the late Ralph Goldman and his surviving wife, Joan, of Dedham. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Paul’s funeral service was held on Wednesday, March 31, at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home in Hingham and was live-streamed. To view the live stream, return to Paul’s obituary page on www.Keohane.com.

Obituary: John W. Koutrobis

John W. Koutrobis, 69
John W. Koutrobis died with his wife by his side on March 13. He was 69.
John was the son of Christos and Pota Koutrobis, of Lowell, a city where he spent his childhood exploring the neighborhoods where he lived, on Butterfield and Draper streets, and loved to reminisce about his adventures growing up.
After graduating from high school, he spent his college years in Athens, Greece, attending Deree College and serving as an Air Force reservist at the U.S. Air Force Base in Athens.
John later obtained his master’s degree in teaching, making a significant impact on countless students he taught during his 34-year career with the Boston public school system – at West Roxbury High School, Mattahunt Elementary School (Mattapan), Kenney Elementary School (Dorchester), and Condon Elementary School (South Boston). He taught students in the Greek bilingual program and third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade special education program.
John’s love for teaching didn’t end in the classroom. During his summers off as a teacher, he owned and operated Joseph’s Pizzeria on Nantasket Beach in Hull. He ran Joseph’s for 38 years before retiring in 2019. He spent every single day of the summer running the restaurant, constantly looking to improve the business and make customers happy. He treated all his employees as if they were his students, always teaching, encouraging, and helping them succeed.
For anyone who met John, he always left a lasting impression with his charismatic personality and ability to overcome all barriers despite having multiple sclerosis. Though he was diagnosed at the age of 30, he never allowed the illness to stop him from traveling the world with his family, becoming a successful businessman, and taking full advantage of all that life offered him.
He will be greatly missed by the family he helped raise with his loving and dedicated wife, Sofia (formerly Drougas), in Norwell: his daughter, Panagiota, and husband, Antonios Athinelis, of Medford; his daughter, Katerina, and her husband, Justin DiCristofalo, of Quincy; his daughter, Christina, and her husband, Michael Regan, of Duxbury; and his son, Christos, and girlfriend, Kerry, of Boston. He is also survived by his grandson, John, his pride and joy; his mother, Pota; his sister, Valerie Murphy, and her husband, Terry, and nieces, of Chelmsford; his brother-in-law, Ernie Drougas, and nephews, of Bourne; and many koumparoi, cousins and dear friends.
Though there will be no public services, John’s family asks that you make a donation in his name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at https://mssociety.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.personalCampaign&participantID=35211.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. For online guestbook, visit CHELMSFORDFUNERALHOME.COM.

Obituary: Edward T. Vallis

Edward T. Vallis, 81
Edward T. Vallis (aka “Big Ed”), formerly of Hull and a resident of Gulfport, Fla., died Feb. 4. He was 81.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Vallis; two daughters, Jody Bowen and her husband, Robert Bowen, of Sebastian, Fla., and Amy Largy and her husband, Patrick Largy, of Tiverton, R.I.; and his three adoring grandsons, Ryan Bowen and Jackson and James Largy. He also leaves two sisters, Alice Whelan, of Hull, and Marion LaPierre, of Gulfport, Fla.; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Edward grew up in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury. He loved the city as a child, shining shoes in Scollay Square at the age of 10 and following “Louie the Ragman” around, collecting junk, which led to his love of antiquing, coin collecting, and metal detecting at the beach.
He was a hard worker and supported his family as a cement finisher by trade. He started his own rust- proofing, steam-cleaning, and upholstery business, called Power Clean Corp. He later worked at the Plymouth Nuclear Power Plant and was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local No. 3. He ended his career with Crystal Clear Pools as a job foreman before his retirement.
Ed loved traveling: vacations to Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Puerto Rico (Vieques), and Las Vegas. He always wanted to go to Alaska. His last vacation was in December 2019, a memorable family Christmas holiday cruise to the Caribbean.
As Edward’s health was declining, he slowly stayed in more than he went out but enjoyed his Netflix and TV shows: “American Pickers,” “Pawn Stars,” and “Jeopardy.” One thing he loved was his Bad Apple hat, and he loved telling people that he paid only 50 cents for it!
He was well taken care of by his loving wife until the end and had the love and support of his daughters. Those who truly knew Ed knew that under that rough exterior was a very big heart. He will surely be missed.
Edward recently told his wife that he wanted to go back to Hull; he missed the salt air. He chose to be cremated. There will be no immediate services, but there will be a time at a future date to celebrate Ed’s life, with his family and friends, and to bring him home to the salt air.

Obituary: Ronald F. Marcella

Ronald F. Marcella
Ronald F. (“Ronnie”) Marcella, of Hull, died Feb. 4.
He was a proud U.S. Marine veteran who served during Vietnam. He earned a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Valor, and a Purple Heart.
Ronnie loved his family. With his quick wit and his limitless sarcasm, he left an impression on anyone whom he crossed paths with. He enjoyed fishing, scratch tickets, and he was the greatest storyteller you will ever encounter.
He spent many years volunteering at the Brockton VA hospital, and he was a member of the Mass Vigil Society. Ronnie was a man who gave his everything to the people he cared about and never expected anything in return. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Beloved husband of the late Sarah A. Marcella, he was the loving father of Christian Marcella, of Hull; Genevieve Rosario, of North Carolina; Jessica Davis, of Quincy; and Mariah Marcella, of Hull. He was the cherished twin brother of Paul Marcella, of Kingston, and brother of the late Richard, Robert, and Phillip Marcella.
He was the devoted grandfather of Isabella Rosario, of North Carolina, and Joseph Marcella, of Hull. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, sisters- in-law, and cousins.
The funeral Mass and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ronnie can be made to the V.A. Boston Healthcare System, Brockton VAMC Campus, ATTN: Voluntary Services (135).
