Obituary: Marion E. Sylvester

Marion E. Sylvester, at 72
Marion Ellen (Bergan) Sylvester, 72, of Hull, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Easter Sunday.
Known as Ellen, Mrs. Sylvester found her calling as a nurse as South Shore Hospital and her mission extended to the infirmary at the Charles Street Jail. Working for the city of Boston was where she developed a passion for serving the forgotten members of the community. Her care touched the homeless, those in addiction and recovery, patients with HIV/AIDS, and those with mental health issues.
Ellen loved to travel and, for the past 35 years, cherished her “spring breaks” with friends in Aruba. She enjoyed the beach, painting with watercolors, making jewelry, and spending time with loved ones. She had an open door, an open heart, and a laugh that will not be forgotten.
The daughter of the late Marion and Dr. William M. Bergan, she was the loving mother of Jennifer and Brian Tichy, of Santa Clarita, Calif.; Jamie and Bruno Barbuto, of Hanover; and Meghan Sylvester and Richard Hennessey, of Hull. She was the sister of Margaret “Bitsy” Larson of Miami, Fla.; Maureen White of La Quinta, Calif., and her late husband, Joseph P. White; and the late Kathleen Bergan.
Mrs. Sylvester poured her heart and soul into the love and care of her grandchildren: Charlotte and Isabella; Bruno, Luca, and Dante; Cordelia and Richard; and William and Gabrielle. She was the godmother of Jodi Purssell and Kevin Roche, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews and all her friends whom she called family.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours today [Thursday], from 4-8 p.m., in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Friday prior to her funeral Mass at St. Ann’s Church in Hull at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ruah Breath of Life, 10 Russell St., Cambridge, MA 02140. See www.Keohane.com for online condolences.
