Obituary: James R. Barber

James R. Barber, at 73
James R. Barber died at his Hull home, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the age of 73.
He grew up in Jamaica Plain and graduated from Mission High School.  Jim ā€“ or Jimmy, as many affectionately called him ā€“ spent summers as a boy in Hyannis Port at golf caddy camp, where he had the good fortune of meeting and caddying for the Kennedy family.  He and his family enjoyed many summer outings in the Brant Rock/Ocean Bluffs beach community.  He served as a member of the Air Force National Guard for a number of years, then went on to graduate from Northeast Industrial Tech in Boston and pursued a lengthy and successful career with IBM and later Bank of Boston and State Street Corp.
Mr. Barber was a mentor and good friend to many people with whom he worked and he carried these friendships throughout his life.  He lived in Norwell for over 30 years.
He enjoyed playing club tennis for a number of years. An avid skier and lover of the White Mountains, he spent much of his time on the slopes and earned a reputation for being the first person to arrive at the lodge in the morning, ready to go. He was a member of the Attitash Mountain Ski TGIF (Thank Goodness Iā€™m Fifty) Ski Club.
Mr. Barber spent a great deal of his retirement and last year of life skiing and surrounded by good friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Maria (Argos) Barber; daughter Christina Barber and her husband, Michael McCarthy, of Hingham, daughter Andrea Salzillo and her husband, Stephen, of Norton; grandchildren Lily, Celia, Mario, and Elena; brothers Paul Barber of Arizona and Richard Barber of Texas; and a loving extended family.
