Anyone hoping to cash winning lottery tickets at the Massachusetts Lottery's Boston office was out of luck Tuesday.

A frozen pipe burst in One Ashburton Place on Monday, according to an official from the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, and the Lottery’s office was shuttered.

“The Lottery’s Boston office was unable to open Tuesday due to water damage in the building. Lottery operations throughout the rest of the state are running at their normal capacity,” Massachusetts Lottery Executive Director Michael Sweeney said in a statement. “For more than a year, the Lottery has been actively advocating for relocating this basement office to the first floor to better serve our customers and protect us from the inherent risks associated with being in the basement level.”

The Lottery office in the basement of One Ashburton Place was closed all day Tuesday and building security officers announced the closure as visitors entered the building and got in line for security. DCAMM said it began cleaning up immediately after the pipe ruptured Monday and worked with all affected building tenants.

The statement said the decision to open or close an office is up to the specific agency.
